LNA Round 19: Top-ranked Lugano Tigers win another game - Feb 10, 2012

LNA top team - Lugano Tigers (16-1) had no problems winning another game on Wednesday. This time they crushed ninth ranked SAM Massagno (2-15) 99-72. The game without a history. Lugano Tigers led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Lugano Tigers outrebounded SAM Massagno 45-34 including a 32-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists comparing to just 8 passes made by SAM Massagno's players. Worth to mention a great performance of American-British point guard Rod Brown (186-78, college: W.Michigan) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 16 points, 5 rebounds and 10 assists. American swingman Edwin Draughan (196-82, college: Yale) contributed with 17 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Montenegrin power forward Danilo Mitrovic (208-84) answered with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds for SAM Massagno. SAM Massagno's coach Milutin Nikolic gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Lugano Tigers have an impressive series of fourteen victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place with 16-1 record. SAM Massagno at the other side stay at the bottom position with 15 games lost. They share it with BBC Nyon. Lugano Tigers are looking forward to face league's second-placed Fribourg at home in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. SAM Massagno will play against Boncourt (#7) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Geneve Lions did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 73-55. It was a great evening for American forward Sean Barnette (195-86, college: Wingate, agency: Warren Sports International) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. Babacar Toure helped adding 9 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. At the losing side American forward Ryan Dermody (206-87, college: Wyoming) responded with 24 points and 5 rebounds. Geneve Lions maintains third place with 12-5 record having four points less than leader Lugano Tigers, which they share with Monthey. BBC Nyon lost their eleventh game in a row. They keep the eighth position with 15 games lost. They share it with SAM Massagno. Geneve Lions will play against Starwings (#6) in Basel in the next round. BBC Nyon will play on the road against SAV Vacallo in Chiasso and hopes to get back on the winning track.

In the last two games of round 19 Starwings was smashed by Fribourg on the road 87-63. Monthey won against Boncourt on its own court 83-74.

The game in Nyon was also worth to mention about. Third ranked Geneve Lions (12-5) played at the court of 8th ranked BBC Nyon (2-15). Geneve Lions did not have too big problems and got a relatively easy victory 73-55. The game was mostly controlled by Geneve Lions. BBC Nyon was better in second period 11-7. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded BBC Nyon 39-21 including a 25-12 advantage in defensive rebounds. Geneve Lions brought some defensive toughness making 8 blocks. It was a great evening for American forward Sean Barnette (195-86, college: Wingate, agency: Warren Sports International) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 11 rebounds. Senegalese power forward Babacar Toure (205-85) helped adding 9 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks. No shocking result in a game when second ranked Fribourg (13-4) crushed at home 6th ranked Starwings (6-11) 87-63. The game without a history. Fribourg led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. Fribourg shot 19 for 26 from the free-throw line, while Starwings only scored two points from the stripe. Fribourg forced 21 Starwings turnovers. It was a great evening for British-New Zealand swingman Brendon Polyblank (197-78, college: Texas St.) who led his team to a victory scoring 17 points and 6 rebounds (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field). American-Jamaican forward Ronald Yates (201-83, college: St.Peter's) helped adding 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Four Fribourg players scored in double figures. At the losing side the former international guard Miroslav Petkovic (183-88) responded with 18 points and 4 assists and Bahamas forward Jaraun Burrows (203-85, college: IPFW, agency: Warren Sports International) scored 16 points and 7 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. The victory was the sixth consecutive win for Fribourg. They maintain second place with 13-4 record having just three points less than leader Lugano Tigers. Starwings at the other side keep the sixth position with 11 games lost. Fribourg will play against league's leader Lugano Tigers on the road in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. Rather expected game when 7th ranked Boncourt (4-13) lost on the road to fourth ranked Monthey (12-5) 83-74. The game without a history. Monthey led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. It was a great evening for American swingman Ian Boylan (197-83, college: CS Northridge) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 13 points, 11 assists and 9 steals. Croatian-Slovenian center Martin Mihajlovic (208-81) helped adding 14 points and 11 rebounds. Monthey's coach Petar Aleksic allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. At the losing side American forward Lamar Roberson (203-86, college: La-Lafayette) responded with 18 points and 8 rebounds and the other American import point guard John Sharper (186-84, college: San Diego St.) scored 17 points and 4 assists. Five Monthey and four Boncourt players scored in double figures. Monthey moved-up to third place, which they share with Geneve Lions. Boncourt lost their fifth game in a row. They keep the seventh position with 13 games lost. Monthey will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Boncourt will play at home against SAM Massagno (#9) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Lions de Geneve signed three players: Roberto Kovac (189-SG-90), Juraj Kozic (198-SF-95) and Randon Grueninger (193-F-95). Kovac played last five seasons with Fribourg Olympic. Last season the Swiss shooting guard averaged 9.9 points and he won Swiss LNA championship and the Swiss Cup. Kozic played with Lugano Tigers and he averaged 7.1 points per game. The Croatian-Swiss signed a two-seasons deal. Grueninger leaved SAM Massagno, last seasons he averaged 5.7 points.   [read more]

Union Neuchatel Basket (LNA) signed 24-year old naturalized Dominican guard Bryan Colon (181-92). He played last season at BBC Monthey (LNA). In 22 games he had 4.5ppg, 1.7rpg and 1.5apg. He helped them to win the cup. The previous (14-15) season Colon played at BBC Lausanne (LNB). In 22 games he recorded very impressive stats: 18.0ppg, 5.4rpg, 2.6apg and 1.4spg in 2014-15 season. Union Neuchatel Basket (LNA) confirmed in their roster 26-year old power forward Jeyvi Miavivululu (201-102kg-90, college: Felician). He played there last season. But in 13 LNA games he recorded just 1.3ppg and 1.4rpg. Miavivululu also played at Felician College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference in the NCAA2 that season.
