LNA Round 1 (Second Stage): Helios keep a leadership position in their group - Feb 28, 2012

The Second Stage in LNA just started. Host teams show no mercy winning all games.

The game had a very big importance for Helios as it allowed them to take a leadership position in Places 1-6. Helios smashed Basel in Vetroz 103-38. The game without a history. Helios led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Basel to just 7 points in second quarter. Helios dominated down low during the game scoring 82 of its points in the paint compared to Basel's 20. Helios forced 27 Basel turnovers and outrebounded them 50-21 including a 19-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. Worth to mention a great performance of international guard Karen Twehues (182-83, college: Cincinnati) who helped to win the game recording 19 points and 6 rebounds. International forward Jalinka Michaux (173-87) contributed with 15 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. American center Megan Skouby (193-86, college: Iowa) answered with 10 points and 9 rebounds for Basel. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with Riva Basket and Fribourg. Basel at the other side still closes the standings with one game lost. They share the position with Nyon and Hope-GBA. Basel will play next round against strong Fribourg trying to get back on the winning streak. Helios will try to continue on its current victory against fifth ranked Hope-GBA in Bernex.

Canadian-Jamaican forward Rhona McKenzie (183-76, agency: LBM Management) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 12 points and 15 rebounds for the winners and Shannon McCallum chipped in 21 points and 4 steals. Riva Basket's coach Fabrizio Rezzonico allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. At the losing side forward Geraldine Mentha (183-94) responded with 11 points. Riva Basket maintains first place in Places 1-6 with 1-0 record, which they share with Fribourg and Helios. Hope-GBA at the other side still closes the standings with one game lost. They share the position with Nyon and Basel. Riva Basket will play against Nyon (#6) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Hope-GBA will play against the league's leader Helios in Vetroz to get more than just one victory in their record.
Very important is a road loss of Nyon (0-1) against Fribourg (1-0) on Saturday night. Visiting Nyon was crushed by Fribourg in Fribourg 87-51. Celeste Trahan nailed a double-double by scoring 25 points, 18 rebounds and 4 blocks (made all of her seven free throws) for the winning side. Fribourg's coach Romain Gaspoz felt very confident using 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Tiffany Benson came up with a double-double by scoring 16 points, 22 rebounds and 4 blocks for Nyon in the defeat. Defending champion keeps a position of Places 1-6 leader, which they share with Riva Basket and Helios. Loser Nyon still closes the standings with one game lost. They share the position with Basel and Hope-GBA. Fribourg will meet at home Basel (#4) in the next round. Nyon will play against the league's second-placed Riva Basket in Riva San Vitale and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
An interesting game for Highflyers (1-0) which hosted in Luzern Pully (0-1). Leader Highflyers managed to get a 7-point victory 83-76. Highflyers maintains first place in Places 7-9 with 1-0 record. Pully at the other side still closes the standings with one game lost. Highflyers' next round opponent will be league's second-placed Ovronnaz-Mart. in Martigny and it will be for sure the game of the week. Pully will play on the road against the league's second-placed Ovronnaz-Mart. in Martigny and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
