There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with change at the leadership position, extra overtimes, favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin.

There was a change at the LNA leadership position after last games. Round 5 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Geneve Lions (3-2). They were edged by fourth ranked Fribourg (4-1) 83-81 on Saturday night. It was a key game for the top position in the league. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Geneve Lions won third quarter 23-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Fribourg won last quarter 27-26. Americans were the main players on the court. Forward Arizona Reid (196-86, college: High Point) stepped up and scored 17 points and 9 rebounds for the winners and swingman Edwin Draughan (196-82, college: Yale) chipped in 17 points and 5 rebounds. Guard Tony Brown (193-79, college: Arkansas St.) responded with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Geneve Lions' coach Ivan Rudez rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Fribourg have a solid series of three victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with SAV Vacallo. Geneve Lions at the other side dropped to the third place with two games lost. They share the position with 3 other teams. They were replaced at the leadership position by SAV Vacallo. Geneve Lions will play next round against Starwings trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Fribourg will try to continue on its current victory against seventh ranked BBC Nyon on the road.

The most impressive stats of the last round was 33 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds by Justin Rutty of BBC Nyon.



Lugano Tigers - SAV Vacallo 90-96 OT

SAV Vacallo claimed an important road win over Lugano Tigers to climb on top of the ladder. I.Kuburovic stepped up with 26 points and 8 rebounds to lead the winners. Matt Schneidermann contributed 19 points for the visitors. Florian Remseier responded with 20 points for Lugano Tigers in the losing effort.

Neuchatel - SAM Massagno 90-75

Everything could happen at the game between two tied teams. Both eighth ranked Neuchatel and 7th ranked SAM Massagno had identical 1-3 record. This time Neuchatel used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Massagno 90-75 on Saturday night. SAM Massagno was trailing by 4 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 27-11 charge of Neuchatel, which allowed them to win the game. They made 17-of-22 free shots (77.3 percent) during the game. Naturalized Senegalese forward Jules Aw (200-86) stepped up and scored 26 points and 5 rebounds (on 12-of-14 shooting from the field) for the winners and American guard Ray Reese (196-87, college: Tulsa) chipped in 20 points. Neuchatel's coach Arnaud Ricoux used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American power forward Clint Chapman (208-89, college: Texas) responded with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks and the other American import forward Pete Campbell (201-84, college: Butler, agency: Warren Sports International) scored 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Four Neuchatel and five SAM Massagno players scored in double figures. Neuchatel (2-3) moved-up to seventh place, which they share with BBC Nyon. Loser SAM Massagno dropped to the ninth position with four games lost. Neuchatel will face league's leader SAV Vacallo in Chiasso in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. SAM Massagno will play at home against Monthey (#5).

Rather predictable result when sixth ranked Monthey (3-2) defeated at home bottom-ranked Starwings (0-5) 88-73 on Saturday. The game was mostly controlled by Monthey. Starwings was better in third quarter 24-21. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Monthey looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Bosnian forward Adnan Hodzic (203-88, college: Lipscomb, agency: Pro One Sports) stepped up and scored 26 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists (on 12-of-14 shooting from the field) for the winners and American swingman Denver Holmes (193-89, college: Evansville) chipped in 18 points. American power forward Justin Dobbins (203-87, college: E.Michigan, agency: Pro Partner Sports Management) responded with 24 points (on 10-of-13 shooting from the field) and the other American import guard Brandon Jenkins (190-85, college: Louisville) scored 16 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Monthey moved-up to third place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Starwings still closes the standings with five games lost. Monthey will face SAM Massagno (#9) on the road in the next round which should be theoretically an easy game. Starwings will play against Geneve Lions and hope to get finally their first victory.

BBC Nyon - Boncourt 83-79

There was an upset when higher ranked Boncourt (3-2) was defeated on the road by ninth ranked BBC Nyon (2-3) 83-79 on Saturday. Boncourt was trailing by 6 points at halftime but managed to get 1-point lead after three quarters before a 22-17 charge of BBC Nyon, which allowed them to win the game. They dominated down low during the game scoring 54 of its points in the paint compared to Boncourt's 32. They outrebounded Boncourt 35-22 including a 25-13 advantage in defensive rebounds. Boncourt was plagued by 25 personal fouls down the stretch. Americans were the main players on the court also this time. Forward Justin Rutty (200-89, college: Quinnipiac) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!) and 12 rebounds for the winners and swingman Marvin Owens (196-86, college: Northwood) chipped in 24 points and 6 assists. Swingman Shy Ely (194-87, college: Evansville, agency: Merit Sports) responded with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and guard Jackson Capel (191-87, college: Evangel) scored 20 points and 4 assists. Four Boncourt players scored in double figures. Boncourt's coach Antoine Petitjean tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. BBC Nyon moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Neuchatel. Loser Boncourt dropped to the third position with two games lost. BBC Nyon will face league's second-placed Fribourg at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Boncourt will play against Lugano Tigers and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Villars Basket (LNB) strengthened their roster with addition of 25-year old power forward Ludovic De Gottrau (194-91). It is actually his comeback to Villars as he has played here before. De Gottrau played recently at Fribourg Olympic (LNA). LNB will be definitely a better match and he can see more playing time. He helped them to win the Supercup. American Chris Jones (188-G-93) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Starwings and that's him to receive a Eurobasket.com Player of the Week award for round 8. The 23-year old guard had the game-high 24 points adding six rebounds and six assists for Starwings in his team's victory, helping them to beat Lugano Tigers (#10, 3-5) 64-56. Lugano Tigers U23 signs Kendyl Grover - 4 days ago

Lugano Tigers U23 (LNB) signed American forward Kendyl Grover (203). He just graduated from Adams St. College (NCAA2). He played 22 games where he had 11.5ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.0apg last season. As mentioned above Grover is just out of the college and it will be his first season as a pro. He played at the RMAC Tournament Semifinals in 2015.
