Thabo Sefolosha selected the top Swiss players playing abroad in last week's games - Feb 10, 2013

  follow us on Facebook Twitter

We bring you last week's top performances from Swiss players who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

Thabo Sefolosha
Thabo Sefolosha
#1. This week's number one is former international guard Thabo Sefolosha (199-84, agency: ACMT, currently plays in NBA). He was the major contributor in an Oklahoma City Thunder's victory against the Phoenix Suns (17-34) crushing them 127-96 in the NBA in Friday night's game. Sefolosha recorded 18 points and blocked 2 shots in 26 minutes on the court. The Oklahoma City Thunder has a very solid 38-12 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Sefolosha has relatively good stats this year: 7.3ppg, 4.0rpg, 1.6apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 54.6%, 3FGP: 40.3% and FT: 82.9% in the 49 games he played so far. He played for the Swiss senior national team two years ago.

Greg Brunner
Greg Brunner
#2. Second place goes to an international power forward Greg Brunner (201-83, college: Iowa, currently plays in Italy). Brunner contributed to a 3-point Trenkwalder RE's victory against the fifth-ranked Lottomatica Roma (12-6) 96-93 in the Italian SerieA on Sunday night. He scored 10 points and added 5 passes in 25 minutes. Trenkwalder Reggio Emilia (9-9) is placed ninth in the SerieA. It's Brunner's first season with the team. Brunner is currently fifth on the list of best rebounders with 7.6rpg. This year his other stats are: 11.5ppg, 1.8apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 54.2%, 3FGP: 25.0% and FT: 66.0% in the 17 games. Brunner is a naturalized American. Despite he played previously for the USA university national team, Brunner is currently a member of the Swiss senior national team. Strangely he has never played in Switzerland.

Clint N'Dumba-Capela
Clint N'Dumba-Capela
#3. The Swiss player who performed third best last week abroad was former U18 international forward Clint N'Dumba-Capela (204-94, currently plays in France). He managed to help ES Chalon-Sur-Saone in a victory against the league outsider Boulazac Basket (5-14) 89-75 in the French ProA last Saturday. N'Dumba-Capela recorded only 4 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 7 minutes on the court. ES Chalon-Sur-Saone (12-6) is placed third in the ProA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year N'Dumba-Capela's overall stats are: 3.3ppg, 3.2rpg, 2FGP: 48.1% and FT: 43.8% in the 10 games. He played for the Swiss U18 national team two years ago.

Christophe Varidel
Christophe Varidel
#4. Guard Christophe Varidel (188-89, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an easy victory against the South Carolina Upstate (7-6) crushing them 74-49 in the NCAA on Saturday night. Varidel recorded 5 points. The Florida Gulf Coast University has a solid 9-3 conference record this season. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. This season Varidel averages: 3.3ppg and 3.2rpg. He used to play for the Swiss national team back in 2010.

The list of other players, who all have Swiss passport but never been selected to any of Swiss national teams:

#1. Rolandas Alijevas (192-G-85, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov, currently plays in Baltic League) contributed to a 1-point Siauliai's victory against the closely-ranked Valmiera (2-2) 82-81 in the Baltic League last Friday. Alijevas scored 10 points and added 4 assists. BC Siauliai (2-2) is placed third in group H. There are only two games left until the end of the Baltic League Top 16. So now every game will be critical. This season Alijevas averages: 9.0ppg, 2.3rpg and 3.8apg. He has a dual citizenship: Swiss and Lithuanian. Despite Alijevas' Swiss passport, he previously played for the Lithuanian university national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Swiss team.

#2. Michael Kessens (206-F-91, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Longwood (1-10) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Kessens' very good performance the Longwood was defeated 76-65 on the road by the Gardner-Webb University. He scored 21 points. This season Kessens has relatively solid stats: 11.5ppg, 1.8apg and 1.6spg.

American Guard Chris Jones (188-G-93) had an amazing evening in the last round for Starwings, receiving a Player of the Week award for round 1. The 23-year old player was the main contributor (25 points, eight rebounds and six assists) to his team's victory, helping them to beat Lausanne (#8, 0-1) 73-64.
