Basketball has an old history in Turkey..First basketball game was played in 1904 and the first official game was recored in 1921 in Cagaoglu.First of all Istanbul Basketball League started in 1927 and in time National Team came to life and started to join the olympic games and European championships.For several times Turkey had success in National Tournaments(Like the Golden Medal in Mediterranean Games and the 1th place in the Balkans Championship , the runner-up for 2 times in Eurobasket and Mediterranean Games.Turkey hosted some important organizations as well..Like the European Championship in 1959 , Mediterranean Games in 1971, Challenge Round in 1981 , 1992 Final Four , European U-21 Championship and the first Eurostars Game in 1996 and Eurobasket 2001 of course..Also clubs like Efes Pilsen,Ulker,Fenerbahce and Turk Telekom are well known members of European Competitions known with Korac Cup , Champions Club Cup and Final Four achievements..
Well..as usual basketball is the most popular sport after soccer in Turkey.During Eurobasket 2001 people were more interested in basketball than soccer team qualified to the world cup finals..Basketball takes the 2nd place in media but the success of the national team,turkish players in nba and europe are remaining the interest on basketball everyday.
