Omer Asik's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Turks playing currently abroad - Nov 18, 2012

We bring you last week's top performances from Turks who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Omer Asik
Omer Asik
   #1. This week's number one is an international center Omer Asik (213-86, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Houston Rockets (4-5) in their last game. Despite Asik's very good performance the Houston Rockets were edged 113-110 on the road by the Miami Heat. He had a double-double by scoring 19 points and getting 14 rebounds. Asik also added 3 assists in 32 minutes on the court. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Asik's first year with the team. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Asik averages: 11.1ppg, 13.2rpg, 1.2bpg, 2FGP: 46.2% and FT: 73.7% in the nine games he played so far. He played for the Turkish senior national team one years ago.

Ersan Ilyasova

   #2. Second place goes to an international forward Ersan Ilyasova (207-87, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. Ilyasova was not able to help the Milwaukee Bucks (6-2) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance the Milwaukee Bucks were defeated 96-92 in Boston by the Celtics. Ilyasova scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Ilyasova's overall stats this year are: 6.9ppg, 5.3rpg, 1.4apg, 2FGP: 32.1%, 3FGP: 27.8% and FT: 42.9%. He played for the Turkish national team in 2011.

Enes Kanter

   #3. The Turkish player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Enes Kanter (208-92, college: Kentucky, currently plays in NBA). Kanter contributed to an Utah Jazz's victory against the Phoenix Suns (4-7) 94-81 in the NBA on Saturday night. He scored 6 points in only 11 minutes. The Utah Jazz has 5-6 record this season. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This year Kanter's overall stats are: 4.5ppg, 3.0rpg, 2FGP: 56.1%(23-41) and FT: 37.5% in the 11 games. He is also a member of the Turkish senior national team.

   #4. Forward Deniz Kilicli (206-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) was not able to secure a victory for the one of league's weakest teams W.Virginia in their game against the Gonzaga University (0-0) in the NCAA. Kilicli recorded 5 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 26 minutes. The W.Virginia was crushed 84-50 in Spokane, WA by the Gonzaga University. Kilicli has been at the team for five years. This season he averages only 2.0ppg in the three games. Kilicli used to play for the Turkish U20 national team back in 2010.


The list of other players, who all have Turkish passport but never been selected to any of Turkish national teams:

   #1. Erkan Inan (192-G-89, currently plays in Sweden), who plays in the Swedish Basketligan could not help 08 Stockholm (5-5) to beat Sundsvall Dragons (9-2). Inan scored 5 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 7 assists. 08 Stockholm was badly defeated 100-84 on the road by the second-ranked Sundsvall Dragons. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Inan has relatively good stats this season: 14.0ppg, 4.3rpg, 3.8apg and 1.4spg.

   #2. Kevin Kaspar (183-G-92, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA was not able to help the W.Kentucky in their last game. Despite his good performance the W.Kentucky (#15) was edged in an overtime 67-64 in Hattiesburg, MS by the University of Southern Mississippi. Kaspar scored 13 points in 34 minutes. Kaspar has relatively good stats this year: 14.0ppg, 4.3rpg, 3.8apg and 1.4spg in the eight games he played so far.

   #3. Mertcan Cantuerk (185-G-91, currently plays in Germany) contributed to an easy victory against the tenth-ranked Oldenburg (2-5) crushing them 89-64 in the German ProB (third division) on Saturday night. He recorded 6 points. MTV Wolfenbuettel von 2012 Herzoege (3-4) is placed seventh in Group North. This season Cantuerk averages only 2.0ppg. He has a dual citizenship: Turkish and German.

Final Spor Genclik Bursa (TBL) added to their roster 23-year old American forward Darryl Palmer (203-95kg-93, agency: Elevate Agency). Palmer just graduated from South Carolina State University (NCAA). He has played there for the last four years. In 33 games he had 7.4ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.4bpg last season. Pinar Karsiyaka SK Izmir (BSL) agreed terms with 28-year old American forward DaJuan Summers (203-109kg-88, college: Georgetown). He played last season at Westchester Knicks (D-League) in the U.S.. In three games he had very impressive stats: 25.3ppg, 10.3rpg, 2.0apg and 2.0spg. Summers was called during the season by the New York Knicks. Galatasaray Odeabank Istanbul (BSL) re-signed 33-year old Czech international swingman Blake Schilb (201-100kg-83, college: Loyola, IL). Schilb played there last season. In 36 BSL games he recorded 10.2ppg, 3.8rpg and 3.0apg. He helped them to make it to the semifinals. Schilb also played 23 games in Eurocup where he averaged 12.1ppg, 4.8rpg and 3.7apg.
