TKBL Round 16: Kayseri beats Galatasaray in the most crucial game of the week - Feb 3, 2013

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Kayseri. Third ranked Kayseri faced their biggest opponent Galatasaray. Host Kayseri (13-3) defeated guests from Istanbul (13-3) 72-68. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Galatasaray. The hosts trailed by 7 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 5-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 72-68. Naturalized American LaToya Sanders (191-86, college: N.Carolina) fired a double-double by scoring 13 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks for the winners. American power forward Asjha Jones (191-80, college: Connecticut) chipped in 22 points. Spanish forward Alba Torrens (188-89) produced 19 points and 8 rebounds for lost side. Galatasaray's coach Ekrem Memnun rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Kayseri have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to second place, which they share with defeated Galatasaray. Kayseri is looking forward to face Besiktas (#13) in Istanbul in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Galatasaray will play at home against Edremit (#14) in Balikesir and is hoping to win this game.
Leader Fenerbahce delivered the fifteenth victory. This time they beat 8th ranked Antakya (7-9) 72-57 in Istanbul. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Cappie Pondexter (175-83, college: Rutgers) who helped to win the game recording 11 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Anastasiya Veremeenko contributed with 9 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Montenegrin center Ana Turcinovic (190-93) replied with 17 points and 9 rebounds for Antakya. Defending champion maintains first position with 15-1 record. Antakya lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth place with nine games lost. They share the position with Botas. Fenerbahce will play against Istanbul Universitesi (#6) in Istanbul in the next round where they are favorite. Antakya will play at home against TED Ankara and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Samsun between Besiktas and Samsun. Thirteenth ranked Besiktas (3-13) got a very close victory on the road over 12th ranked Samsun (3-13). Besiktas managed to escape with a 1-point win 73-72 in the fight for the twelfth place. Worth to mention a great performance of Milka Bjelica who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 24 points and 12 rebounds. At the losing side Chante Black responded with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 13 rebounds. Besiktas have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to twelfth place, which they share with defeated Samsun. Besiktas will meet at home league's second-placed Kayseri in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Samsun will play against Botas (#9) in Adana and hope to secure a win.
The game with biggest result difference took place in Adana. Local Ceyhan Bld (8-8) beat 9th ranked Botas (7-9) 65-49. The winners were led by Carolyn Swords who scored that evening 16 points and 8 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Ceyhan Bld maintains sixth position with 8-8 record, which they share with Istanbul Univ. Botas lost sixth consecutive game. They dropped to the eighth place with nine games lost. Ceyhan Bld's next round opponent will be Canik Bld (#11) in Samsun where they are favorite. Botas will play at home against Samsun.

Rest of the games of round 16 were quite predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
TED Ankara was defeated by Mersin in a road game 77-67. Tarsus Bld beat Canik Bld at home 83-70. Istanbul Univ. won against Edremit on the opponent's court 83-68.
The best stats of 16th round was 18 points and 12 rebounds by Irina Osipova of Istanbul Univ..



Mersin - TED Ankara 77-67

There was no surprise when 10th ranked TED Ankara (6-10) was defeated on the road by fifth ranked Mersin (11-5) 77-67. The game was mostly controlled by Mersin. TED Ankara was better in fourth quarter 21-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 19-of-25 charity shots (76.0 percent) during the game. The winners were led by American guard Shavonte Zellous (178-86, college: Pittsburgh) who scored that evening 26 points and 6 rebounds and the other American import forward Erlana Larkins (185-86, college: N.Carolina) supported her with 11 points and 18 rebounds. Even 17 points and 9 rebounds by Nigerian swingman Mactabene Amachree (190-78, college: Abil.Christian) did not help to save the game for TED Ankara. American guard Shannon Bobbitt (157-85, college: Tennessee) added 12 points and 9 rebounds for lost side. Four TED Ankara players scored in double figures. TED Ankara's coach Kaan Artun tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Mersin have an impressive seven-game winning streak. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Tarsus Bld. TED Ankara at the other side keeps the tenth position with ten games lost. Mersin's supporters look forward to an exciting derby game next round, where their team will face at home their local rival from Mersin Tarsus Bld.

But then Tarsus Bld had a 19-16 second period charge getting the lead and Canik Bld was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 70-83. Tarsus Bld dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Canik Bld's 42. They outrebounded Canik Bld 42-30 including 16 on the offensive glass. Tarsus Bld players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. The winners were led by Israeli Shay Doron (175-85, college: Maryland) who scored that evening 27 points and 4 assists and American Delisha Milton-Jones (186-74, college: Florida, agency: Josep and Nicolas) supported her with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Torino - Hatay 76:72 Torino clinched the second straight victory at the Olympiacos Tournament.
