TKBL Round 18: Istanbul Universitesi is defeated by Galatasaray in a derby game - Feb 13, 2013

The most interesting game was a derby match between two local teams from Istanbul: Galatasaray (#2) and Istanbul Universitesi (#8). Galatasaray (15-3) smashed visiting Istanbul Universitesi (8-10) by 45 points 84-39. The game without a history. Galatasaray led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated on the defensive end, holding Istanbul Universitesi to just 4 points in third quarter and to 14 points in second half. They outrebounded Istanbul Universitesi 41-20 including a 31-16 advantage in defensive rebounds. Vincentian-Spanish center Sancho Lyttle (192-83, college: Houston) had a double-double by scoring 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Belgian center Ann Wauters (194-80, agency: Josep and Nicolas) chipped in 9 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists during the contest. The best for the losing side was Russian center Irina Osipova (196-81) with 13 points and 6 rebounds. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Galatasaray maintains second position with 15-3 record having just two points less than leader Fenerbahce. Istanbul Universitesi at the other side keeps the eighth place with ten games lost. Galatasaray are looking forward to face Besiktas (#12) in Istanbul in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Istanbul Universitesi will play at home against TED Ankara (#10) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
TKBL top team - Fenerbahce (17-1) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat ninth ranked TED Ankara (7-11) 88-78. American Angel McCoughtry (187-86, college: Louisville) notched 16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 7 steals (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) to lead the effort and Yasemin Horasan supported her with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Even 24 points by American center Marcedes Marie Walker (191-86, college: Pittsburgh, agency: LBM Management) did not help to save the game for TED Ankara. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Fenerbahce have a solid three-game winning streak. Defending champion maintains first position with 17-1 record. TED Ankara at the other side keeps the ninth place with 11 games lost. They share the position with Canik Bld and Antakya. Fenerbahce will play against Tarsus Bld (#5) in Mersin in the next round. TED Ankara will play on the road against Istanbul Universitesi (#8) in Istanbul and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Samsun was smashed at home by 25 points 77-102 and even the fact of playing on their own court did not help. It was a good game for Cheryl Ford who led her team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 33 points (!!!) and 18 rebounds (on 14-of-18 shooting from the field). Canik Bld (7-11) moved-up to ninth place, which they share with TED Ankara and Antakya. Samsun lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the thirteenth position with 15 games lost. Canik Bld's next round opponent will be higher ranked Kayseri (#3) at home and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Samsun will play against Mersin (#4).

In the last two games of round 18 Ceyhan Bld was destroyed by Mersin on the opponent's court 95-74. Tarsus Bld managed to outperform Antakya in a home game 69-64.


Edremit - Besiktas 81-83

A very close game took place in Balikesir between Besiktas and Edremit. Twelfth ranked Besiktas (5-13) got a very close victory on the road over 14th ranked Edremit (1-17). Besiktas managed to escape with a 2-point win 83-81 on Wednesday evening. The guests trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 5-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 83-81. Besiktas made 20-of-24 free shots (83.3 percent) during the game. Besiktas outrebounded Edremit 42-31 including 29 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was Montenegrin power forward Milica Jovanovic (189-89) who scored 28 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Montenegrin forward Milka Bjelica (193-81, agency: LBM Management) chipped in 14 points and 9 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was American forward Ashley Paris (191-87, college: Oklahoma) who recorded a double-double by scoring 16 points and 16 rebounds and Spanish point guard Sandra Ygueravide (172-84, agency: Josep and Nicolas) added 27 points respectively. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Besiktas have an impressive five-game winning streak. They maintain twelfth position with 5-13 record. Bulgarian-American point guard Doneeka Hodges-Lewis (175-82, college: LSU, agency: LBM Management) contributed with 21 points and 4 assists for the winners. Swingman Rana Derin (175-92) replied with 20 points and the former international forward Meric Yenal (188-88) added 15 points and 7 rebounds in the effort for Samsun. Mersin - Ceyhan Bld 95-74

Rather expected game when 6th ranked Ceyhan Bld (9-9) was crushed on the road by fourth ranked Mersin (13-5) 95-74. It looked good early as Ceyhan Bld took an 9-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Mersin had a 35-9 second period charge getting the lead and Ceyhan Bld was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 74-95. They outrebounded Ceyhan Bld 38-24 including 24 on the defensive glass. Americans were the main players on the court. It was a good game for guard Shavonte Zellous (178-86, college: Pittsburgh) who led her team to a victory with 26 points and 5 rebounds. Forward Erlana Larkins (185-86, college: N.Carolina) contributed with a double-double by scoring 15 points, 12 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals for the winners. Mersin's coach Ceyhun Yildizoglu felt very confident using 10 players and allowed the starting five to rest. Forward Kayla Pederson (193-89, college: Stanford) replied with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists and center Carolyn Swords (198-89, college: Boston Coll., agency: LBM Management) added 18 points in the effort for Ceyhan Bld. Tarsus Bld - Antakya 69-64

Very predictable result in Mersin where fifth ranked Tarsus Bld (12-6) defeated 10th ranked Antakya (7-11) 69-64. However just five-point win is not that big difference and the fans of host team counted on more convincing victory. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 21-15. But Antakya won second period 16-13. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Tarsus Bld won last quarter 16-13. They made 16-of-20 charity shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Tarsus Bld outrebounded Antakya 38-26 including 31 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for guard Danielle Marie Robinson (178-89, college: Oklahoma) who led her team to a victory with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Naturalized American forward Melisa Can (188-84, college: Rutgers) contributed with 17 points and 8 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners. She played most recently at Good Angels in Slovakian Extraliga. Baugh managed to play in three leagues last year (!!!). In 28 Extraliga games she recorded 9.2ppg, 6.4rpg and 1.0spg.
