Elite Eight openers: DKV Joventut and Galatasaray celebrate - Apr 11, 2008

Galatasaray Cafe Crown won the opener of the ULEB Cup Elite Eight and became the first team to advance to the ULEB Cup semifinals. In a Turkish thriller Galatasaray beat Besiktas Cola Turka 61:60. Robert Hite (188-G-84, college: Miami, FL) led the winners with 22 points. Charles Gaines (201-F-81, college: S.Mississippi) collected 8 points and 10 rebounds, while Owens scored 8. Predrag Drobnjak (212-F/C-75) and Preston Shumpert (198-G-79, college: Syracuse) posted 17 points in defeat. Galatasaray went into an early lead and increased it to 19:11 after the first 10 minutes of the game. Akyol brought Galatasaray to an 11 point deficit with a layup to make it 27:16. They still had an 11 point advantage when the teams went to the lockers. Besiktas improved its defense with its starting lineup back on court early in the fourth quarter. Dalmau hit an acrobatic shot and Apodaca made free throws to tie it at 58:58. Besiktas had its first lead at 60:58 but then Cuneyt Erden (185-G-77) sank a corner triple for a win.
DKV Joventut won the Spanish battle in the Elite Eight of Uleb Cup. The team overcame Pamesa Valencia 77:67 to advance to the Final Four. Demond Mallet (186-G-78, agency: Higher Vision Sports, college: Mc Neese St.) led the winners with 16 points. Eduardo Hernandez-Sonseca posted 14 points, while Ricky Rubio scored 12. Shammond Williams (187-G-75, college: N.Carolina) top-scored in the losing effort with 25 points.

Joventut is now set to face Galatasaray Cafe Crown in the first semifinal on Saturday.

The semi-finalist of the french championship, Adecco ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne add the american forward, Eric Campbell (199-F-76, agency: SportsTalent, college: Spring Hill) to his roster. He'll meet again Vincent Collet, who coached him 2 years ago in Le Mans. This year, he played in Israel, at Hapoel Holon, where he won the championship versus Maccabi Tel Aviv. He posted 11,5pts and grabbed 8rbs in Israeli Premier League.   [read more]

Turk Telekom continues with signings after the end of the season. This time the team signed point guard Baris Ermis (194-G-85) on a two-year deal. Ermis came from Pinar Karsiyaka where he averaged 8.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg and 3.3 apg for 31 games in Turkish TBL. He was a member of Turk Telekom on season 06/07 when he was loaned from Efes Pilsen. He didn't have a lot of chance to play at that time in Turk Telekom as he averaged only 2.   [read more]

Ben Dewar (196-G-81, college: L.Superior) put signature on one year deal with ASVEL Basket. After hiring of new head coach Vincent Collet, Devar is the second signing of ASVEL for the next season. Dewar arrived to ASVEL from another Pro A team, Entente Orleans 45, where he spent last 3 years. Previous season Ben Dewar had 30 appearances for Orleans averaging 12.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg and 1.5 spg.
