Hapoel Jerusalem won ULEB Cup 2004 (Photo: Euroleague)
   Hapoel takes ULEB cup!

Simply unbelievable, this game, this season, there are not enough superlatives to describe the great game Hapoel Jerusalem gave today. It was a team effort, where every player contributed his share, both on offense and on defense, in the dismantling of Real Madrid. Jerusalem becomes the first Israeli team besides Maccabi Tel Aviv to win a European Cup.

Hapoel Jerusalem 83 - Real Madrid 72
The first quarter was very close; Jerusalem played very aggressive on defense and dominated the boards, to take a 9-6 lead after 5 minutes of play, but Sheffer and Solomon committed 2 quick fouls each, this helped Real on a 7-0 run and 15-11 lead with 1:30 to go in the quarter. Solomon with 1 from the line and a big three pointer, tied the game at 15 in the end of the first. Solomon opened the second quarter with another 3 pointer, but committed his 3rd foul and went to the bench for very long minutes, but Jerusalem didn't panic from this, and kept playing smart and calm, Sheffer controlled the game, Mizrahi played very well on both ends of the court, and Jerusalem took a 34-25 lead. Herreros with a 3 pointer and Bennett  with one of his own sent the teams to the halftime break with a 37-33 lead by Hapoel. The start of the second half belonged to Kelly McCarty (201-F-75, college: S.Mississippi) with 2 three pointers and another bucket ran Hapoel to a 45-35 lead, Real narrowed the deficit to 5 and Solomon committed his 4th which sent him to the bench again, but Kelly McCarty (201-F-75, college: S.Mississippi) was there again with a 3 pointer and a foul which gave sign to a 12-3 run by his team, and a 60-45 lead by Hapoel, at these minutes Awojobi was everywhere, with some great passes and a few points of his own. The good game by Hapoel continued and Katz gave his team a 66-49 lead. Bennett was there once again for Real, to narrow the gap to 13, but it was Kelly McCarty (201-F-75, college: S.Mississippi) again with an unbelievable shot with the buzzer to give his team a 68-53 lead at the end of the quarter. The last quarter didn't start well for Hapoel, Sheffer with 2 quick fouls, left Jerusalem starting guards with 4 fouls each, and Kambala started playing well under the basket, together with Fotsis made the score 70-63. At this point Kambala committed his 4th and Sharon Druker took a critical time out which Jerusalem came back from with a basket and a foul by Mizrahi a minute later Kambala was out of the game with  fouls and Solomon made it 75-65, 3 minutes to go, the cup looked close to Jerusalem. Fotsis didn't give up and narrowed the deficit again to 5, 75-70, but then came the most important basket of the game by who else then the ice man, Doron Sheffer, the score was now 77-70, 1:30 to go. Bennett missed an easy lay-up, fouled Kelly McCarty (201-F-75, college: S.Mississippi) and missed another shot. Solomon Bombed one last three pointer from downtown, and Katz closed the game with a tip in. 83-72 the Cup is traveling to Jerusalem!!

Real Madrid has always disputed the Final when it has played the second European competition, and the history is right one more year. In the derby to get a berth in the ULEB Final, Real Madrid had easier: 8 points in the first leg, it played at home, and Estudiantes arrived to the match with important injuried players in the paint: Patterson, Vidaurreta and Reyes. That's the reason Estudiantes tried giving more speed to the pace of the match and with far shots, but or 3-pointers or FT was wise. All this are too many disadvantages to defeat Real Madrid, which outrebounded his rival in first half. Patterson was disqualified at the end of third period and it was enough to certify the white squad's victory. Elmer Bennett was the best in the Finalist team leading perfectly to his mates and getting great numbers: 21 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals and 9 drawing fouls, for reaching 39 ranking points.
In the Final, Real Madrid will deal with Hapoel Jerusalen, which defeated in the other Semifinal to BC Reflex 79-76 and fought back after losing the first leg in a 1-point match. The Israeli team has based the Final ticket on its strength at home, where only has lost one match in ULEB. The Final will be hosted in Charleroi next April 13.

Freeman came of the bench in the second quarter but didn't help his team too much, and after 14 minutes of play the score was 29-27 to Hapoel, a minute later Sheffer committed his 3rd foul, and things didn't look good for Jerusalem. Reflex took a 34-33 lead, and with some bad minutes by the home team, the half ended with Reflex leading 41-36. Reflex took a 10 point lead at the start of the third, 48-38; the final looked far far away for Jerusalem.
