The Ukrainian Superleague has made great strides in recent years. From its website to a corporate logo and game highlights plus interviews on Youtube, the leagues presentation is getting better and better. As an additional service, all games are broadcasted live on the internet, mostly in very solid quality. Also, team budgets seem stable and most teams can afford exciting import players.
There are many signs that the competiton on the court will improve even further this upcoming season. Some of the bottom teams from the 2011/2012 edition seem very ambitious to change their situation.
Politekhnika-Halychyna brought back Serbian Head Coach Zeljko Lukajic (agency: Beo Basket ) who engineered a turnaround in the second half of the season. Veteran big man Vladan Vukosavljevic (206-F/C-84, agency: Beo Basket) will also be back. They inked point guard Sasa Vasiljevic (183-PG-79, agency: Beo Basket) who has previous Superleague experience and had a very good year with Donezk in 2010/2011. They then acquired LSU grad Darrel Mitchell (181-PG-84, agency: Beo Basket, college: LSU) who was one of the top backcourt players in the Superleague with Khimik last season and should be a major upgrade over Keddric Mays (183-G-84). On the other hand, they need to stomach the departure of versatile swingman Lance Harris who joined Vanoli Cremona in Italy.
SK Cherkasy Monkeys opted for a coaching change after a disappointing season and went with former Lukoil Academic head man Jovica Arsic . In regard to player personnel, they obtained SF Denis Ikovlev (201-SF-86, agency: Ryzhov Stanislav, college: Nevada) who averaged 10.2ppg, 4.9rpg and 2.0apg with Khimik in 2011/2012. Former Serbian league top guard Marko Ljubicic (195-G-87, agency: Beo Basket) comes over from Ikaros in Greece A1.
MBC Mykolaiv chose the Baltic route: Former Liepajas Lauvas head coach Agris Galvanovskis brought two of his players with him to Ukraine: Scoring combo guard Josh Mayo (182-G-87, agency: Ryzhov Stanislav, college: Ill.-Chicago) should be a 15-ppg scorer in the Superleague and big guard Martins Kravcenko (192-G-85) was a Baltic League honorable mention last season.
Vasilis Fragias is the new captain on the bridge of SK Dnipro Azot Dniprodzerzhynsk. The veteran Greek head coach last guided Kolossos Rodou in Greece A1. His first major signing was Power Forward Alan Wiggins (206-F-85, college: USF) who had a very good season with Halychyna in 2010/2011 and last played in Pro A France.
Kryvbasbasket, the best of the teams with a negative record in 2011/2012, brought in Latvian Head Coach Karlis Muiznieks (agency: Alti Sport ), the reigning Coach of the Year in the Polish PLK who guided Trefl Sopot to the Polish Cup title and the PLK finals. The team renewed the contract of American combo guard Pierce Caldwell (191-G-88, agency: Alti Sport, college: Incarnate Word) who had a solid first year with 11ppg, 3rpg and 3apg with good shooting percentages.
All in all it looks as if the bottom-feeders from last season will not be that easy to beat this upcoming year
