Superleague Player Interview - Pierce Caldwell - Jul 30, 2012

  follow us on Facebook Twitter

After joining the team in November 2011, it was recently announced that combo guard Pierce Caldwell (191-G-88, agency: Alti Sport, college: Incarnate Word) signed another one year deal with Kryvbasbasket-Lux Kryvyi Rih keeping him in Ukraine for the 2012/2013 season, as well. contacted the former NCAA 2 All-American to discuss the motivation and reasons behind this move. Amazingly, we found out that he originally walked on to an NCAA 2 team and parlayed this very unceremonious beginning into a successful collegiate and overseas career.

You renewed your contract with Kryvbasbasket-Lux Kryvyi Rih for another season. What were the main factors in this decision?

I want to have my first full season with a European team. I want to start from training camp.

You started a bit slow in the Superleague but you were on fire towards the end of the season. Did you have to get used to things?

Yes, I came in the middle of the season and I first needed to get used to my team.

How do you characterise the Superleague? Style of play, competition level, etc.?

Superleague is a competitive League, you must be ready every night.

How did you manage to get noticed coming from the D2 level? Was it tough?

I did things that no one had done at my school and in our conference I won MVP of the conference three years in a row and also was a three time All-American. Won back to back conference championships. That is how I got noticed at a Division 2 school.

How did you end up on the D2 level in the first place?

Ha. I was not highly recruited coming out of high school so I walked on at Incarnate Word University, a local Division 2 school. After the first half of the semester I was awarded a full scholarship.

Describe your game. Would you say you are a 2 who can play the 1?

I would say I am a basketball player. A sniper who can run the team, as well.

What are your objectives for the upcoming years?

Win games and improve my individual game in every way possible.

Thank you very much for this interview and good luck for your season!

Kushnirov's double-double lands him Player of the Week award - 1 day ago

24-year old center Oleksandr Kushnirov (210-C-92) had an amazing evening in the last round for Mykolaiv and receives a Player of the Week award for round 6. He had a double-double of 23 points and 16 rebounds, while his team beat Kremen (#9, 1-4) 87-78. Mykolaiv maintains the 5th position in Ukrainian league. They would have been even better if they did not have these two lost games earlier in Regular Season. Mykolaiv will need more victories to improve their 4-2 record. Ku...   [read more]

Budivelnyk Kyiv (Superleague) waived 31-year old American forward Marshall Brown (200-102kg-85, college: Missouri). In 5 Superleague games he recorded 3.2ppg and 3.0rpg this season.
