Kryvbasbasket - Cherkasy 62-72

Kryvbasbasket (0-1) lost in Krivoy Rog on Friday night. Hosts were defeated by Cherkasy (1-0) 72-62. American forward Charles Thomas (203-86, college: Arkansas) fired 16 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners. Serbian guard Marko Ljubicic (195-87, agency: Beo Basket) chipped in 9 points and 6 rebounds. Four Cherkasy players scored in double figures. American guard James Florence (185-88, college: Mercer, agency: Pro One Sports) produced 21 points and 5 assists and forward Vitali Malchevskiy (204-87) added 20 points respectively for lost side. Kryvbasbasket's coach Karlis Muiznieks rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. It was the only win of guest team this round and in all other games host teams recorded victories. Cherkasy is looking forward to face DniproAzot in Dniprodzerzhynsk in the next round. Kryvbasbasket will play at home against Dnipro in Dnepropetrovsk and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Budivelnyk - BC Kyiv 77-61

Another exciting game was a derby match between two teams from Kyiv: Budivelnyk and BC Kyiv. Budivelnyk (1-0) crushed visiting BC Kyiv (0-1) by 16 points 77-61. It was a very close game until the last quarter, when Budivelnyk's pressure prevailed and they won that period 23-11 extending their advantage to 16 points. Budivelnyk shot 24 for 33 from the free-throw line, while BC Kyiv only scored eight points from the stripe. BC Kyiv was plagued by 26 personal fouls down the stretch. Worth to mention a great performance of American guard Malcolm Delaney (191-89, college: Virginia Tech) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 25 points and 11 rebounds. Naturalized Lithuanian center Michailis Anisimovas (214-84) contributed with 15 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. American guard Anthony Goods (191-87, college: Stanford) answered with 18 points and British point guard Justin Robinson (187-87, college: Rider, agency: Two Points) added 10 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in the effort for BC Kyiv. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Azovmash faced BC Odessa. Host Azovmash (1-0) smashed guests from Odessa (0-1) 80-61. The game was mostly controlled by Azovmash. BC Odessa managed to win second period 18-17. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Bosnian point guard Nemanja Gordic (193-88) stepped up and scored 14 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners and Serbian power forward Tadija Dragicevic (206-86, agency: Beo Basket) chipped in 12 points and 9 rebounds. Azovmash's coach Aleksandar Kesar used an eleven-player rotation and allowed the starting five to rest. At the losing side the former international center Stanislav Balashov (210-79, agency: New Trend Agency) responded with 16 points and 5 rebounds and the former international Andriy Agafonov (208-86, agency: Interperformances) scored 13 points and 6 rebounds. Azovmash will meet at home Khimik in the next round and are hoping to win another game. BC Odessa will play against BC Donetsk.

A very interesting game took place in Frankivsk. It ended with only three-point defeat on the road of Halychyna (0-1) to Hoverla (1-0) 79-76 on Friday evening. Halychyna was ahead by 6 points at the halftime before a 44-35 second half run of Hoverla. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. American guard Eugene Lawrence (184-86, college: St.John's, agency: Two Points) nailed 21 points, 8 rebounds and 7 assists for the winning side and his fellow American import Kyndall Dykes (190-87, college: New Orleans, agency: Edge Sports) accounted for 19 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Dykes is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American point guard Darrel Mitchell (181-84, college: LSU, agency: Beo Basket) came up with 18 points and 8 assists and point guard Oleksandr Dolenko (191-90, agency: New Trend Agency) added 15 points and 12 rebounds respectively for Halychyna in the defeat. Four Halychyna players scored in double figures. Halychyna's coach Zeljko Lukajic tested ten players, but that didn't help to avoid defeat in this game. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Ferro-ZNTU used a home court advantage and beat the opponent from Dnepropetrovsk 95-81. The game was mostly controlled by Ferro-ZNTU. Dnipro was better in third quarter 26-25. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They made 21-of-23 charity shots (91.3 percent) during the game. Ferro-ZNTU players were unselfish on offense dishing 27 assists. 25 personal fouls committed by Dnipro helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. American guard Jeremy Chappell (191-87, college: Robert Morris) nailed 24 points and 7 rebounds (made all of his nine free throws !!!) for the winning side and his fellow American import guard Randy Culpepper (182-89, college: UTEP) accounted for 19 points and 8 assists. American point guard Derrick Low (188-86, college: Washington St.) came up with 33 points (!!!) and 8 assists and international power forward Maxym Korniyenko (204-87) added 18 points and 12 rebounds respectively for Dnipro in the defeat. Ferro-ZNTU will have a break next round. Dnipro will play on the road against Kryvbasbasket (#14) in Krivoy Rog.

SK Cherkasy Monkeys (Superleague) tabbed 23-year old American forward Mike Best (208-98kg-93). He just graduated from Cal-Irvine (NCAA). Best has played there for the last five years.
