Higher League Round 8: Khartsyzsk defeats leader VolinBasket - Nov 11, 2012

There were just 8 rounds played in Regular Season of Higher League and we can clearly see which teams will fight for top positions and which will try to avoid bottom places. The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with loss of the undefeated team, and even winless team recording their first victory.

The most crucial game of the last round was the first loss of undefeated VolinBasket (2-1) on the court of second ranked Khartsyzsk on Saturday night. Visitors were defeated by Khartsyzsk 73-69. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of VolinBasket. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 25-14. But VolinBasket won second period 16-9. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. They outrebounded VolinBasket 38-26 including 28 on the defensive glass. 32 personal fouls committed by VolinBasket helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Center Sergei Sabutskyy (208-C-86, agency: TSS Management) orchestrated the victory by scoring 18 points and 7 rebounds. Center Vladimir Orlenko (214-85) contributed with 19 points (on 7-of-8 shooting from the field) for the winners. point guard Yuri Zozulia (189-81) replied with 16 points (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!) for VolinBasket. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Khartsyzsk have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 6-1 record behind leader Musson. VolinBasket at the other side dropped to the sixth place with one game lost. Khartsyzsk are again looking forward to face VolinBasket (#6) in Lutsk in the next round. VolinBasket will have a break next round.
An interesting game for Musson (7-0) which played road game in against 3rd ranked Kirovograd (3-4). Top-ranked Musson had an easy win 82-65. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of Kirovograd. Worth to mention a great performance of guard Dmitro Palanichuk (185-90) who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 9 rebounds and Dimitri Shevchenko who added 17 points during the contest. Guard Ivan Gusarov (190-87) responded with 11 points and 5 rebounds. Both coaches tested many bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Undefeated Musson have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Newly promoted Musson maintains first position with 7-0 record. Kirovograd at the other side dropped to the fifth place with four games lost. Musson will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Kirovograd will play again at home against the league's leader Musson (#1) in Symferopil and hopes to get back on the winning track.
Koksokh-Stal's fans can finally celebrate the first win of their team after six consecutive loses. They used home court advantage to defeat BK Kremen (0-3) 80-69 on Saturday. The winners were led by Jan Selivanov who had that evening a double-double by scoring 27 points and 14 rebounds. Even 14 points and 7 rebounds by Igor Chumichev did not help to save the game for BK Kremen. Koksokh-Stal (1-6) left bottom position moving up to eighth place. It was BK Kremen's third loss in a row. They still closes the standings with three games lost. Koksokh-Stal will again meet at home BK Kremen (#9) in the next round. BK Kremen will have a break next round.
Bottom-ranked Ternopil-TNEU is still unable to win any game. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their fifth consecutive match to sixth ranked Tornado (3-2) 88-75. The best player for the winners was Sergey Lapenko who scored 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Tornado's coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Tornado moved-up to fourth place. Ternopil-TNEU at the other side still closes the standings with five games lost. Tornado will have a break next round. Ternopil-TNEU will play again against Tornado (#4) and hopes to get finally their first victory.
The game between top-ranked Avantazh-Politekhnik (3-0) and 7th ranked BC-93 Pulsar (2-5) in Kharkov on Saturday ended with biggest points difference. Avantazh-Politekhnik beat guests from Rovno 96-78. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of BC-93 Pulsar. Avantazh-Politekhnik have a solid three-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place. Loser BC-93 Pulsar keeps the seventh position with five games lost. Avantazh-Politekhnik will face again BC-93 Pulsar (#7) in Rovno in the next round.


Ternopil - Tornado 75-88

Bottom-ranked Ternopil-TNEU is still unable to win any game. This time they could not use their home court advantage losing their fifth consecutive match to sixth ranked Tornado (3-2) 88-75. The game was mostly controlled by Tornado. Ternopil-TNEU was better in second period 21-20. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Tornado dominated down low during the game scoring 66 of its points in the paint compared to Ternopil-TNEU's 38. The best player for the winners was guard Sergey Lapenko (196-85) who scored 22 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Forward Igor Meshcheryakov (204-86) chipped in 21 points and 8 rebounds. Four Tornado players scored in double figures. Tornado's coach allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Guard Anton Nifonton (190-89) produced 24 points and 7 rebounds and center Sergyi Teleshko (209-92) added 23 points and 7 rebounds respectively for the hosts. Tornado moved-up to fourth place. Ternopil-TNEU at the other side still closes the standings with five games lost. Tornado will have a break next round. Ternopil-TNEU will play again against Tornado (#4) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

Koksokh-Stal - BK Kremen 80-69

Koksokh-Stal's fans can finally celebrate the first win of their team after six consecutive loses. They used home court advantage to defeat BK Kremen (0-3) 80-69 on Saturday. BK Kremen was trailing by 7 points at halftime but managed to get 3-point lead after three quarters before a 28-14 charge of Koksokh-Stal, which allowed them to win the game. Koksokh-Stal outrebounded BK Kremen 40-23 including 28 on the defensive glass. The winners were led by power forward Jan Selivanov (200-79) who had that evening a double-double by scoring 27 points and 14 rebounds and guard Pavlo Haylo (182-87) supported him with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Even 14 points and 7 rebounds by Russian center Igor Chumichev (209-89) did not help to save the game for BK Kremen. point guard Bogdan Sosoi (186-92) added 9 points and 4 assists for the guests. Volodimir Kholopov takes the reins in Cherkasy - May 16, 2013

Volodimir Kholopov is back on the bridge in Cherkasy Monkeys. The team has agreed on terms of contract with the specialist to return to head coaching position. Volodimir Kholopov worked as head coach of Cherkasy in 2008/2012 seasons. He was replaced at helm of the team by Jovica Arsic before the season start.
