Steven Burtt selected the top Ukrainian playing abroad in last week's games - Nov 25, 2012

We bring you last week's top performances from Ukrainians who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international guard Steven Burtt (185-84, college: Iona, currently plays in EuroChallenge). He led his Turkish team Tofas to a 3-point victory over the closely-ranked Krka (1-2) 82-79 in the EuroChallenge in Tuesday night's game. Burtt was MVP of the game. He scored 19 points and added 7 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) in 35 minutes on the court. Tofas Bursa (2-1) is placed second in group A. There are only three games left until the end of the EuroChallenge Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Burtt is ranked sixth on the list of the top scorers in the league with 19.3ppg. He also averaged so far 3.0rpg, 5.0apg, 2FGP: 56.5%(13-23), 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 94.4%(17-18) in the three games he played so far. Burtt is a naturalized American. He is currently a member of the Ukrainian senior national team. Burtt used to play for Ferro-ZNTU Zaporozhye in Ukrainian league.

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Serhiy Lishchuk (210-82, agency: Beo Basket, currently plays in Eurocup). He contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked s Oliver Baskets (1-2) crushing them 97-64 in the Eurocup last Tuesday. Lishchuk scored 6 points and had 3 steals. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Valencia Basket (3-0) is placed first in the Eurocup. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. There are only three games left until the end of the Eurocup Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. It's Lishchuk's fourth season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 11.3ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.3spg and FT: 77.8%. Lishchuk played for the Ukrainian national team in 2011.

Alex Len

   #3. The Ukrainian player who performed third best last week abroad was U20 international center Alex Len (216-93, currently plays college basketball in the States). He led Maryland to a victory against the Lafayette College 83-74 in the NCAA on Tuesday night. Len scored 16 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 28 minutes. The University of Maryland has conference record this season. This year Len has relatively solid stats: 11.3ppg, 4.3rpg, 1.3spg and FT: 77.8% in the three games. He is also a member of the Ukrainian U20 national team.

   #4. Shooting guard Sergii Gladyr (196-88, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB could not help Baloncesto Fuenlabrada (1-8) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Gladyr's good performance the bottom-ranked Baloncesto Fuenlabrada was edged 86-83 on the road by the much higher-ranked Gescrap BB (#4). He scored 11 points. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Gladyr's overall stats this year are: 9.4ppg and 3.3rpg. He is also Ukrainian national team player.

   #5. Former international guard Vitaly Boyko (183-82, currently plays in Russia), who plays in the Russian Superleague (second division) was not able to help Volgograd (1-7) in their last game. Despite Boyko's very good performance Volgograd lost 74-78 at home to the higher-ranked (#9) Rjazan. He was the second best scorer with 21 points. Boyko also added 5 rebounds and dished 7 assists in 36 minutes. It was Volgograd's fourth consecutive loss in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. It's Boyko's first year with the team. He has reliable stats this season: 14.6ppg, 4.4rpg, 3.0apg and 1.6spg in the seven games. Boyko used to play for the Ukrainian national team six years ago.

   #6. Point guard Klym Artamonov (183-93, currently plays in Baltic League) was not able to secure a victory for Siauliai (5-2) in their game against Ventspils (7-0) in the Baltic League. He did not beat the league record on Saturday evening. Artamonov scored only 3 points. The second-placed Siauliai was defeated 71-65 on their home court in Siauliai by the leading Ventspils in the group A of Baltic League. They ended the series of four consecutive victories. There are only three games left until the end of the Baltic League Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Artamonov belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #5. This season he averages: 4.0ppg, 2.3rpg and 4.6apg. Artamonov is an international player who is currently on the senior Ukrainian National Team roster.

Olexandr Berhin

   #7. Former U20 international center Olexandr Berhin (205-85, currently plays in Russia) is a teammate of previously mentioned Vitaly Boyko and both played together in the last Russian Superleague game. Berhin, who plays in the Russian Superleague (second division) couldn't help Volgograd (1-7) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Volgograd lost 74-78 on their home court in to the higher-ranked (#9) Rjazan. Berhin was the top scorer with 22 points. He also added 6 rebounds in 38 minutes. It's Berhin's first season with the team. This year Berhin's overall stats are: 8.1ppg, 5.3rpg and 1.1apg in the seven games. He used to play for the Ukrainian U20 national team seven years ago.

Vladyslav Kondratyev

   #8. Forward Vladyslav Kondratyev (203-90, currently studies in the States) contributed to Bryant's surprising victory against the Brown University 68-61 in the NCAA on Wednesday night. Kondratyev recorded 6 points in 17 minutes. The Bryant University has conference record this season. Kondratyev has been at the team for four years. This year his total stats are: 5.6ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.8apg in the eight games. Kondratyev used to play for the Ukrainian U20 national team back in 2010.


One more player who has never been selected to any of national teams, but has Ukrainian passport:

   #1. Maksym Shtein (206-C-80, agency: Limelight Hoops, currently plays in Germany) contributed to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Noerdlingen (4-4) 84-68 in the German ProB (third division) last Saturday. Shtein scored 7 points. Weissenhorn Youngstars (5-3) is placed fifth in Group South. Shtein's total stats this season are: 5.6ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.8apg. He has a dual citizenship: Ukrainian and German.

SK Cherkasy Monkeys (Superleague) tabbed 23-year old American forward Mike Best (208-98kg-93). He just graduated from Cal-Irvine (NCAA). Best has played there for the last five years. In 38 games he averaged 9.8ppg and 5.1rpg last season. Best helped them to make it to the final after they ended regular season as second best team. Budivelnyk Kyiv (Superleague) agreed terms of contract with two new Americans: 31-year old forward Marshall Brown (200-102kg-85, college: Missouri) and Calvin Godfrey (206-F-90, college: Memphis). Brown played last season at Kanazawa Samuraiz in Japanese B League D3. In 51 games he had 13.4ppg, 6.9rpg, 2.8apg and 1.1spg. Calvin Godfrey (206-F-90, college: Memphis) is a newcomer of Budivelnyk Kyiv, for a tryout first. He already showed himself in a friendly game against "Zolotyj Vik", where he made 8 pts + 4 reb + 3 as. A 26-years old foward comes from Memphis NCAA, where he was trasnferred for the opportunity to play on a bigger stage.
