Superleague Round 31: Halychyna edges Ferro-ZNTU by one point - Dec 23, 2012

Coincidentally all visitors won their games.

The most exciting game of round 31 in the Superleague took place in Zaporozhye. This derby game ended with only one-point home defeat of much higher ranked Ferro-ZNTU (16-6) to sixth ranked Halychyna (13-10) 91-90 on Sunday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Ferro-ZNTU. Ferro-ZNTU cut a 15-point halftime deficit to one at the end of the game. Halychyna made 31-of-40 free shots (77.5 percent) during the game. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. 29 personal fouls committed by Ferro-ZNTU helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Serbian power forward Vladan Vukosavljevic (206-84, agency: Beo Basket) fired a double-double by scoring 25 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. American point guard Darrel Mitchell (181-84, college: LSU, agency: Beo Basket) chipped in 24 points and 4 steals. Halychyna's coach Zeljko Lukajic used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. American guard Randy Culpepper (182-89, college: UTEP) produced a double-double by scoring 18 points, 6 rebounds and 11 assists for lost side. Halychyna have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Hoverla. Ferro-ZNTU at the other side keeps the second position with six games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Yuzhny. Third ranked Azovmash faced 4th placed Khimik. Guests from Mariupol (14-5) smashed host Khimik (12-8) 88-66. Worth to mention a great performance of Serbian center Miroslav Raduljica (213-88) who helped to win the game recording 16 points. Oleksiy Pecherov contributed with 17 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. American forward Vernon Goodridge (206-84, college: La Salle) answered with 11 points for Khimik. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Azovmash maintains third place with 14-5 record having 3 victories less than leader Budivelnyk. Khimik lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the sixth position with eight games lost. Azovmash will play against Cherkasy (#9) at home in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Khimik will have a break next round.

In the last two games of round 31 BC Donetsk defeated BC Odessa in a road game 102-90. Kryvbasbasket was beaten by Hoverla at home 74-85.
The best stats of 31th round was 26 points and 9 rebounds by Justin Love of BC Odessa.



BC Odessa - BC Donetsk 90-102

There was no surprise when 13th ranked BC Odessa (5-16) was defeated at home by ninth ranked BC Donetsk (10-8) 102-90. It looked good early as BC Odessa took an 8-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then BC Donetsk took control and eventually winning the game that evening by 12 points. They dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to BC Odessa's 40. BC Donetsk players were unselfish on offense dishing 29 assists comparing to just 12 passes made by BC Odessa's players. Worth to mention a great performance of Lithuanian power forward Darius Songaila (204-78, college: Wake Forest, agency: Priority Sports) who helped to win the game recording 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. International point guard Denys Lukashov (190-89) contributed with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists for the winners. American guard Justin Love (189-78, college: St.Louis) answered with 26 points and 9 rebounds and the former international Andriy Agafonov (208-86, agency: Interperformances) added 14 points in the effort for BC Odessa. Five BC Donetsk and four BC Odessa players scored in double figures. BC Donetsk have a solid series of three victories in a row. Defending champion moved-up to seventh place. BC Odessa lost third consecutive game. They keep the thirteenth position with 16 games lost. BC Donetsk will play against Mykolaiv (#8) in Mykolaiv in the next round. BC Odessa will have a break next round.

No shocking result in a game in Krivoy Rog where fifth ranked Hoverla (13-10) defeated 10th ranked Kryvbasbasket (9-14) 85-74. Hoverla players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Ryan Pearson (198-90, college: George Mason) who helped to win the game recording 18 points and 9 rebounds. His fellow American import guard Eugene Lawrence (184-86, college: St.John's, agency: Two Points) contributed with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists for the winners. Five Hoverla players scored in double figures. American swingman Winsome Frazier (193-82, college: Mississippi St.) answered with 26 points and 6 rebounds and Serbian center Zoran Krstanovic (204-82, agency: TSS Management) added 15 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Kryvbasbasket. Hoverla moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Halychyna. Kryvbasbasket lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the tenth position with 14 games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

Khimik - Azovmash 66-88

An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Yuzhny. Third ranked Azovmash faced 4th placed Khimik. Guests from Mariupol (14-5) smashed host Khimik (12-8) 88-66. But then Azovmash had a 34-13 second period charge getting the lead and Khimik was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 66-88. Worth to mention a great performance of Serbian center Miroslav Raduljica (213-88) who helped to win the game recording 16 points. The former international center Oleksiy Pecherov (213-85) contributed with 17 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Five Azovmash players scored in double figures. American forward Vernon Goodridge (206-84, college: La Salle) answered with 11 points and the former international forward Vitaliy Kovalenko (203-84) added 9 points in the effort for Khimik. SK Cherkasy Monkeys (Superleague) tabbed 23-year old American forward Mike Best (208-98kg-93). He just graduated from Cal-Irvine (NCAA). Best has played there for the last five years. In 38 games he averaged 9.8ppg and 5.1rpg last season. Best helped them to make it to the final after they ended regular season as second best team.
