A week ahead of St Valentine's Day, Edinburgh Kings massacred St Mirren 80-53 on the under-threat basketball court at Portobello High School to move another step closer to retaining their Scottish League title. Kings owed their success, which puts them three wins clear of Saints and two clear of Falkirk Fury, to their stout defence and, though the opening exchanges were tight - they took the first quarter 22-17 and the second 17-13 for a 39-30 half-time lead - they never needed to call on injured Scottish international centre Simon Flockhart, though the big man suited up. 'We played well, especially in defence,' said point guard Garreth Lodge, who was up against his Stirling University teammates Neil Fraser and Kris Cleary. 'A big factor was the way we shut down danger man Nic Collins, who only scored eight points, and Mike Kirkpatrick hit two big threes at the start of the second quarter which gave us breathing space,' added coach Danny Costello. The third quarter, which Kings took 21-11, proved decisive and they moved into a 60-41 lead which this focussed group were never going to let slip. Latvian forward Edgars Rekis had another fine all-round game, marking Collins and top-scoring with 16 points, Mike Kirkpatrick and Paddy Campbell adding 13 each, Laurie Costello 12 and Liam McCabe 10 while Lodge added eight and Craig Reilly six. Kings' next game is away to near neighbours East Lothian Peregrines who again proved they are capable of upsetting any team in the league if only they can get the job done in the final quarter. Peregrines were tied 59-59 with Falkirk Fury at the end of the third at Musselburgh but went down 85-70. Scottish international and former Italian League centre Roni Gordon hit 27 points for the visitors while another centre Swede Rob Jansson replied with a season-high 24 for East Lothian.

Scotland will face the probable tournament favourites Denmark in their opening match of the 2010 European Basketball C Championship in Malta on July 5. The Danish men, who were in division A only three years ago, have never played in this tournament before and are a surprise entry, will be formidable opponents for a Scottish team who have never been higher than third. In addition coach Tom Campbell will almost certainly have to do without Scotland's two top players Robert Archibald and Kieran Achara, who are likely to be on Great Britain duty in Europe in August. Scotland, who took the bronze medals in the last Euro C in Edinburgh in 2008, will go on to play San Marino on July 6 and Malta on July 7. In the other group Wales open against Gibraltar and go on to play Moldova, silver medallists last time, and Andorra. The cross-overs are on July 9 and the finals and play-offs on Saturday July 10.

Wolves Pick up Two Wins
Worcester Wolves sent a statement out to the rest of league about their Playoff ambitions, as they overcame Everton Tigers yesterday, 67-76 at the Echo Arena, and Airwaves Plymouth Raiders 84-80, on their home court on Saturday night. In the win over Raiders, the University of Worcester side made an astounding thirteen three pointers, in their first victory over the South Coast outfit, who have now lost five games on the bounce. In the Everton game, a 9-0 burst at the very start, was all Paul James side needed to gain control of the game, as the Tigers struggled to put the ball in the basket, which led to them being 12-18 down after the first ten minutes. The second quarter was a similar story, as the Wolves led by nine points for most of the way, thanks to the play of American floor general Rod Middleton and the period ended 28-31 to Worcester. Despite Everton pulling it back to within two at 33-35, a 10-0 burst for Worcester, including threes from Middleton and Daniel Gilbert put them into a comfortable position again. The third quarter subsequently ended with the Wolves being 48-55 up, and they then closed out the game from the free throw line after a valiant effort from Everton in the final period, to win 67-76. However, James said that his side made hard work of the result: We made it hard for ourselves. He said: Im trying to develop a killer instinct into my players so we can turn winning positions into actual wins. Tonight we had a 16 point lead with less than seven minutes left, but our indiscipline let them into the game and we had to hang on to get the win.
As the Wolves experienced two wins, PAWS London Capital had the opposite, as they lost 112-66 to Newcastle Eagles on Friday evening, and 85-52 to Guildford Heat two nights later. The Raiders also had a similar fate, as the loss against Wolves was followed by a tight 75-79 defeat against Essex, who were also beaten 83-95 by Everton on Saturday evening. Conversely, Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders went 1-1, as a 100-86 defeat to Sheffield Sharks was followed by a 100-85 win over Marshall MK Lions. To their credit though, the Lions bounced back with a dramatic 70-71 win over Cheshire Jets, as Milton Keynes tough defence prevented Cheshire big man Colin OReilly getting off a quality shot attempt with 4.3 seconds left in the game. Rounding off the weekends results is a game Worthing Thunder will want to forget, as they were convincingly beaten 106-68 by Glasgow Rocks, north of the border.
