The end of the opening weekend of the 2012/13 BBL Championship season saw the Newcastle Eagles and Glasgow Rocks end on a high as they defeated the London Lions and Durham Wildcats respectively on Sunday.

The Eagles maintained their 100% start to the season as they secured a 72-88 victory over the Lions as professional basketball returned to Crystal Palace National Sports Centre.

The Eagles had Charles Smith (198-F-75, college: Rider) step up to the plate and he led all scorers in the game with 17 points for the Eagles, while new signing Orlan Jackman (196-F-88, college: Oklahoma City) bagged 16 points for the Lions in the defeat.

A fast start from the Eagles saw them storm out to a 28-17 lead in the opening quarter and they never looked back as they extended their advantage throughout the game and ran out comfortable winners in the end.

In Sunday's other contest, the Glasgow Rocks made the short trip across the border and picked up their first victory of the season with an 82-92 victory over the Durham Wildcats at the Newton
Aycliffe Leisure Centre.

The vistors had a combination of EJ Harrison (186-PG-76, college: Connecticut) and Gareth Murray (201-F-84, agency: Prossin Sports Management, college: Kalamazoo Valley CC) to thank in no small part as they each bagged a game-high 20 points for the victors.

The Rocks were able to steadily increase their lead throughout the contest, but were never able to completely end the home side's hopes of staging a comeback despite leading by as many as 14 points

at 68-82 with five minutes remaining in the game.
Wildcats new signing Mike Baldarelli (193-F/G-89, college: Assumption) hit three three-pointers in the closing stages, but it was not enough to fully close the gap as the Rocks held on for the all-important victory.
