Jeff Jones

Manchester Giants' coach Jeff Jones admitted that Saturday's loss against Worcester Wolves could provide a wake-up call for his team.

The Giants had won both of their opening two games, but struggled in the first half at Worcester, and left themselves with too much to do despite a second half comeback.

"We were awful and no one played well" said Jones. "Don't get me wrong, Wolves played well we just never got going and it was partly my fault I should have used some guys earlier then I did because they were fresher and would of given us a spark, maybe.

"It honestly would be difficult to single anyone out that played well for us. It was a good reality check for us and just reminded my guys we need to stay with the game-plan if we are going to be respectable in this league.

"Alex Owumi was very good for them we need to stop letting guys have career nights against us, and [Stanley] Ocitti was very good for them extremely active and will be a tough guard for a lot of teams because of their other big guys. Worcester will be there or there about so all in all the game came early enough for us so we can use it to learn we have to play hard every second we are on the floor."

Giants had maintained their perfect start to the season the previous night with an ultimately comfortable win against One Health Sharks Sheffield, but Jones had mixed feelings about the game:

"We were pretty poor in the first half but really stepped it up in the 3rd quarter we actually played at the tempo and intensity we will need to play at for 40 minutes each and every game.

"For us James [Jones], Dave Watts and Stefan Gill scored well and they all got it going at the same time which made it difficult for Sheffield there may not be three better shooters as a trio in the league. We also had Dave Aliu and Mike Williams both getting a double-double which gave us five guys in double figures. Again this is what we want to be like, sharing the ball and getting everyone involved

"Obviously the two guards stood out for them. I really like Micah Williams, he shot the ball really well a but he never really looked rushed and was able to create his shot with minimum effort an extremely economical player and then [Gage] Daye had an exceptional first half I am not sure if we finally guarded him in the second half and maybe he got a little tired which certainly helped us."

Giant return to action on Friday when they host champions Newcastle Eagles before making the long trip to UCP Marjon Plymouth Raiders on Sunday afternoon.
