Team Northumbria womens basketball got their season off to a flying start by thrashing neighbours Sunderland in the National Cup.

TN saw off their visitors in a landslide 116-22 victory despite a rocky start. The hosts took a while to find their rhythm but came fighting back in a fearless performance.

Head coach Josh Merrington said: I wasnt happy with how we started the game.

We managed to pick up the intensity but not until the end of the first quarter where we looked really quite good.

Although it is undeniable that TN boast a big scoring threat, their coach can still identify plenty of room for improvement

You cant really complain when you win by 94 points, added Merrington.

But the perfectionist inside me knows there is still a lot of room for improvement and that is something we need to work on.

The victory gives us confidence moving forward but I dont want us to get too far ahead of ourselves.

Zoe Vickers and Katrin Hulme particularly stood out for the home side - both ruling the scoreboard and adding to the quick pace of the game.

Merrington added: Overall it was a good performance for everyone but Zoe and Kat had excellent games.

Going into the match TN were confident in their ability to win after Sunderland crashed out in the first round of the same competition last season.

Merrington added: I was confident we would win but I wasnt quite sure what to expect coming into the match. Nothing is ever certain.

TNs first game of the season was recorded and will be analysed by both players and coach to see what parts of the game need to be worked on in training this week.

But the teams training schedule is reduced as they compete in their first BUCS game on Wednesday evening.

TN play in a friendly this Saturday in another Sport Central clash (5pm tip).
