Maccabi assistant Guy Goodes in pursuit of GB's coaching job - Dec 19, 2012

Guy Goodes
Maccabi Tel Aviv assistant coach Guy Goodes (Agency: Avi Zilberman) has applied for the head coaching job for Great Britain's Senior Men's national-team, Eurobasket has learned earlier today.

Goodes, 42, a former British-Israeli point guard is in high pursuit of GB's coaching position which is absent since Chris Finch resigned to join the Houston Rockets' coaching staff last summer. Yet, multiple NBA coaches have also sent in their applicant ballots for the shaky United Kingdom national squad position, which is set to participate in the upcoming 2013 European Championship games in Slovenia.

Yesterday, British basketball suffered a overwhelming blow after losing its entire funding from UK Sport in the wake of last summer's Olympics failure. Despite GB's hoops team featuring current NBA players Luol Deng (Chicago Bulls) and Joel Freeland (Portland Trail Blazers), the Brits dropped four of their five Olympic games and failed to reach the quarterfinals.

Goodes' coaching career began in 2004 as an interim coach for Israel's Maccabi Rishon Lezion, who eventually hired him for the remainder of the season and the following one, in which Goodes led the organization to the Israeli final four. He then worked for two season as an assistant coach for European power Maccabi Tel Aviv and two season for Hapoel Jerusalem.

In 2010, Goodes returned to familiar grounds signing a two-year deal with Tel Aviv as an assistant coach. Throughout his time on the sidelines, Goodes earned seven championships and won 3 state-cups (All with Maccabi).
Goodes' international resume includes taking over Israel's U20 national-team two summers ago.

Goodes was unavailable for comment.
