Orlan
Jackman
Orlan Jackman (196-F-88, college: Oklahoma City), remember the name as this is a young man that has burst on to the British Basketball scene and has a bright future ahead of him. In his rookie BBL season he's already gaining a reputation for being a serious scorer and a very athletic, smart young player.

The London Lions certainly made a shrew signing and are reaping the reward for awarding a first professional contract to the 24-year-old Londoner. Jackman is 4th in the BBL scoring charts at 18.5 pts per game, in the top ten rebounders with 8.5 a game, 2nd in total points scored and adds in 2.9 assists per game for good measure.

An athletic small forward capable of also sliding in to either guard position his all-round game is certainly spreading his reputation and respect amongst the BBL fraternity. Jackman who has represented GB at both under-18 and under-20 level comes to the BBL from NAIA College Oklahoma City where he gained experience as a starter.

The highly affable 6' 5" rookie spoke to EuroBasket following his sides 94 - 71 loss to BBL Champions Newcastle Eagles last Sunday and immediately pinpointed the reasons he thought the game went against his side.

"Its always tough when someone comes in to your own house and beats you that bad. Our decision making and our execution of plays was not good enough whilst The Eagles executed the hell out of their plays. We didn't rebound at all, they were getting all kinds of tip outs, rebounds and put backs and everything. It was a bad night all round for us."

Jackman himself still managed 18 points in the loss to keep his fine scoring run and average up at the high levels he's now set for himself.

"So far this season I think I've done extremely well considering I'm a rookie. Almost 19 points a game is a lot of points and I know there's some vets out there that aren't putting up as many points and they're probably better scorers than I am. Coming in to the BBL I was hoping on playing hard. That's one thing I always do. When you play hard you give yourself a lot of opportunities to be the best you can be, like Im showing now."

Jackman was well prepared for life in the professional leagues after coming through two of Britain's most famous basketball academies at Manchester and Hackney.

"I went to Manchester for a year after coming through High School but before that I came up through the Hackney White Heat system run by the late great Joe White who's 10-year anniversary it was a couple of weeks ago at Hackney Community College where I played with Darius Defoe who I played against tonight."

So, what does Jackman see for the future both this season and beyond?

"First of all we want to get The Lions above .500 and remain above .500 and then we can aim for a home seed in the play-offs and hopefully be in the finals. And we have the BBL Trophy too so we have to go for everything that's available. I'm not thinking of anything further than achieving as much as I can this season with The Lions. I'm just going to play every game as it comes 'cos you never know what can happen. I just hope I can keep on playing hard and keep on impressing everyone."

Certainly few English rookies have impressed as much as Jackman has in such a short time as a professional and if he continues to keep his feet on the ground and improving the way he is it looks like he'll have a long and bright future in the professional game.
