Rocks Ink Vanderbeken - Jan 9, 2013

Jamie
Vanderbeken
The Glasgow Rocks have brought in 6'10" Canadian/British forward Jamie Vanderbeken (210-F-87, college: Iowa St.) to the line-up for the second half of the 2012/13 season. With the unconnected recent news of forward, Owen McNally, deciding to head back home to Mississippi - Vanderbeken's signing could not have happened at a more appropriate time.

Vanderbeken comes into the BBL on the back of a very impressive resume which includes a college career at Iowa State University (ISU) and experience playing in the NBA D-League (Bakersfield Jam). He also received an invitation from GB Head Coach, Chris Finch, to attend training camp for the Eurobasket roster in the summer of 2009, unfortunately injury prevented any chances of him playing for Team GB, however his recent development suggests that he may well be back on the national team radar in the coming summers.

Head Coach, Sterling Davis, had the following to say about Jamie:

"Vanderbeken is a guy who will give us a little more size and scoring power on the interior. Jamie has a very solid resume having played at a high-level division one program along with great experience from the NBA D-league. He will be able to not only help with the interior play but also be a very big threat from the perimeter which works well in our system."

Vanderbeken made great progress while at ISU which culminated withhim starting all 29 games for the Cyclones during his senior year where he averaged 11.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game. He also averaged a remarkable 42.3% from the behind the 3 point line throughout his entire tenure at ISU. His 6'10" frame along with his ability to knock down the outside shot should be a welcome addition to the Rocks line-up.

Glasgow Rocks General Manager, Daniel Bajwoluk, is upbeat about their most recent acquisition. "We have been speaking to Vanderbeken since the departure of GB internationalist, Kieron Achara. It has been a long process to get him here but we are confident that it has been worth it. We believe that Vanderbeken has similar traits to Kieron, especially with his ability to hit the outside shot and we are hoping he can make the desired impact to our squad after our recent inconsistencies."

The Glasgow Rocks will be looking to get all required BBL documentation complete this week so that Vanderbeken can make his debut against the Manchester Giants this Friday 11th January. Rocks fans will have to wait until the 20th January before they get to see Vanderbeken in action at the Emirates Arena, when the Glasgow Rocks take on the One Health Sharks Sheffield.

Manchester drop curtain on Senior Playoff Finals with D1M win - 1 day ago
Manchester retained their D1M Playoff title after a comfortable 73-53 win over Loughborough. A poor 2nd quarter where the Riders fell behind and shot just 2/15 from the floor proved too much to overcome against a well drilled and talented Magic side. Unable to call upon the injured Josh Ward-Hibbert, Loughborough struggled to find answers on offence for the duration. With the game meandering through the 2nd half, an altercation between Lee Goldsborough and Jonas Dieterich during a loose b...   [read more]

Kent add playoff glory to league winning season - 17 hours ago
In a tightly contested game that was fit for a final, Kent managed to outlast rivals Thames Valley 90-87. Consistently playing catch up in the final quarter after a poor 3rd period, the Cavs rallied from a double digit deficit before coming up just short on the final buzzer. Trailing by 3 with less than 10 seconds on the clock, Thames Valley had one last roll of the dice to try and force the game into OT. Inbounding the ball to star man Martelle McLemore (197-G/F-88, college: W.Michigan),...   [read more]

Middlesex LTBC take D3 Playoff win after epic battle - 17 hours ago
In a Final that should be remembered as an instant classic, both Team Birmingham Elite and Middlesex LTBC left everything out on the court in an attempt to secure the D3M Playoff Championship. Middlesex eventually came out on top, 63-62, but the result was in the balance right up until the final buzzer. In a fixture that had everything, the crowd were treated to a real spectacle to end Playoff Saturday at the National Basketball Performance Centre in Manchester. With the score line separa...   [read more]
