Bristol Academy Flyers ready to soar into BBL - May 8, 2014

Already knowing what a victory against British Basketball League opposition feels like is something which bodes well for Bristol Flyers as they prepare to take their place in the BBL for the 2014-15 season.

Andreas Kapoulas and his players made history earlier this year when they chalked up a maiden win against top flight opposition - something they hope will pave the way for future victories starting in the autumn as they take the step up to the elite level.

On one of the most memorable nights in the club's history, Flyers left Surrey United stunned when they recorded a shock victory in the BBL Trophy 1st Round.

And, while they weren't able to subsequently overcome Cheshire Phoenix in the quarter-finals of the competition, it gave a valuable insight into what will be required next season and whetted the appetite for their newly attained BBL status.

Looking forward to joining the BBL family is Bristol Sport Chairman , Martin Griffiths, who said, "preparations have been underway for some time now for the Flyers to enter the BBL. We aim to make sure they are competitive in 2014-15 and look forward to an exciting season ahead".

The club have already established themselves as one of the most successful and well-supported community basketball clubs in the country and have participated in EBL Division One for seven years. They were crowned champions in 2011 after winning the EBL National Cup a year earlier.

Ending the 2013-14 campaign with a loss in the EBL Play-offs against Leopards, Flyers finished in seventh spot during the regular season with a 14-12 record.

Meanwhile Andy Webb, Chief Operating Officer for the BBL extended a warm welcome to the new entrants.

He stated, "We are excited to confirm the arrival of Bristol Flyers to the BBL and, having worked on their readiness over the last 18 months, we are confident they will be an excellent addition."

"They demonstrate how we are determined to strengthen our basketball footprint across the UK and extend our reach into new areas."

"It's also great for basketball in the south-west that there is now another club in the region and a relatively local rival for Plymouth University Raiders to compete with."

"We are also confident Flyers can attain success in all aspects of their operations and especially with the support and expertise from Bristol Sport behind them."

Meanwhile following a review, it has been agreed (with the club) that East Scotland Warriors will delay entry to BBL Competitions until 2015-16.

The 2016-17 BBL Championship got underway on Friday night as Leicester Riders and Worcester Wolves enjoyed contrasting league victories.
