Robbie Hummel (6'9''-F-89, college: Purdue) earned the respect of a generation of Purdue basketball fans while playing through pain and exhibiting a love of the game. While playing for Khimki of the VTB United League in Russia last season, Hummel noticed that passion beginning to wane. So he decided time had come to begin the next phase of his basketball life. Hummel announced Tuesday night on Twitter that he is retiring from playing basketball. He said he has agreed to join both ESPN and BTN as a color commentator and studio analyst. "The sad reality is, I've just had a tough time staying healthy since my sophomore year of college" Hummel wrote. "Last season was difficult for me, living abroad. It got to the point where there were many nights I wondered if I was cheating a game I love by not being 100 percent all in. "That's never been me with this game, and because of that, a change has become something I feel is necessary." Hummel played two seasons in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He spent time with the Denver Nuggets prior to last season. Hummel also played with professional teams in Spain and Italy. A broadcasting career has been on Hummel's horizon for years. In the summer of 2015, Hummel spent a weekend at the National Basketball Players Association's Sportscaster U experience at Syracuse University. He had previously done some on-air work with CBS and XM Radio while accepting the Lowes Senior C.L.A.S.S. Award as a senior. Hummel currently ranks among Purdue's all-time leaders in starts (fourth), points (ninth), rebounds (fifth), 3-pointers made (fourth), free throw percentage (sixth), blocked shots (eighth) and steals (10th). Hummel admitted he doubted whether he would ever play high-level basketball again after suffering two ACL tears in eight months at Purdue. He called the resulting Boilermaker and pro careers "things that I'll never forget and cherish." "I've been so fortunate to have incredible teammates, coaches and basketball organizations in my life that go back to Valparaiso High School, and for that I am so thankful," Hummel wrote. "It's been a hell of a ride, and I look forward to continuing that watching a sport I've loved since I was a kid, college basketball."
