Regular Season Day 9: VEF Riga - Lokomotiv 72-77 (26-22, 15-18, 17-15, 14-22)
Date: December 17, 2012 We cannot really consider it an upset in the game between close teams when 3rd placed Latvian VEF Riga (6-3) was defeated at home by fourth ranked Russian Lokomotiv (6-3) 77-72 on Monday. The guests trailed by 3 points after three quarters before their 22-14 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Lokomotiv made 17-of-19 free shots (89.5 percent) during the game. American-Greek point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) stepped up and scored 21 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals for the winners and Australian center Aleks Maric (211-84, college: Nebraska) chipped in 14 points and 12 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American-Bulgarian guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA) with 24 points and 6 rebounds and forward Kristaps Janicenoks (196-83) scored 9 points and 5 rebounds. VEF Riga's coach Ramunas Butautas rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Lokomotiv moved-up to third place, which they share with Krasnie Krilya and VEF Riga. Lokomotiv will face league's second-placed Zalgiris in Kaunas in the next round and it will be for sure the game of the week. VEF Riga will play on the road against Triumph Lyubertsy in Lubertsy.
