Regular Season Day 9: Spartak SP - BC Donetsk 59-63 (12-15, 18-19, 8-8, 21-21)
Date: December 17, 2012 There was a surprise result when seventh ranked Ukrainian BC Donetsk (4-5) defeated on the road 3rd placed Russian Spartak St.Petersburg (6-2) 63-59 on Monday. The game without a history. BC Donetsk led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 50 of its points in the paint compared to Spartak St.Petersburg's 30. Lithuanian power forward Darius Songaila (204-78, college: Wake Forest, agency: Priority Sports) stepped up and scored 16 points and 5 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field) for the winners and FYR Macedonian guard Vojdan Stojanovski (194-87) chipped in 14 points. The best for the losing side was Greek center Loukas Mavrokefalidis (207-84) with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds and American point guard Patrick Beverley (185-88, college: Arkansas) scored 11 points. Both coaches tested many bench players in such tough game. Defending Ukrainian champion moved-up to sixth place, which they share with 3 other teams. Loser Spartak St.Petersburg keeps the third position with two games lost. BC Donetsk will face league's second-placed Unics Kazan at home in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Spartak St.Petersburg will play against Lietuvos rytas in Vilnius and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
