Regular Season Day 10: Triumph - VEF Riga 78-80 (33-24, 24-23, 15-13, 6-20)
Date: January 6, 2013 A very close game took place in Lubertsy between Latvian VEF Riga and Russian Triumph Lyubertsy. Fourth ranked VEF Riga (7-3) got a very close victory on the road over 5th ranked Triumph Lyubertsy (4-6). VEF Riga managed to escape with a 2-point win 80-78 on Sunday evening. The guests trailed by 12 points after three quarters before their 20-6 charge, which allowed them to win the game. VEF Riga dominated on the defensive end, holding Triumph Lyubertsy to just 6 points in fourth quarter. VEF Riga forced 19 Triumph Lyubertsy turnovers. American-Bulgarian guard Earl Rowland (188-83, college: St.Mary's, CA) scored 22 points and 5 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Latvian Kaspars Berzins (213-85) chipped in 12 points during the contest. Four VEF Riga players scored in double figures. At the losing side Canadian power forward Kyle Landry (207-86, college: N.Arizona) responded with 29 points and 5 rebounds and Sergey Karasev (202-93) scored 18 points. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Defending Latvian champion moved-up to third place, which they share with Krasnie Krilya and Khimky. Loser Triumph Lyubertsy dropped to the seventh position with six games lost. They share it with CEZ Nymburk and BC Donetsk. VEF Riga will meet at home Neptunas (#9) in the next round where they are favorite. Triumph Lyubertsy will play against the league's leader Zalgiris in Kaunas and hope to secure a win.
