Regular Season Day 10: Zalgiris - Lokomotiv 89-81 (27-19, 32-15, 14-29, 16-18)
Date: January 6, 2013 The game had a very big importance for second-ranked Lithuanian Zalgiris as it allowed them to take a leadership position. Zalgiris defeated 3rd ranked Russian Lokomotiv in Kaunas 89-81. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning first half. But Lokomotiv won third quarter 29-14. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Zalgiris made 25-of-28 free shots (89.3 percent) during the game. They also forced 19 Lokomotiv turnovers. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. Paulius Jankunas (205-84, agency: Alti Sport) fired 14 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Croatian guard Marko Popovic (185-82, college: S.Idaho JC, agency: Alti Sport) chipped in 15 points and 5 assists. Zalgiris' coach Joan Plaza used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward Derrick Brown (203-87, college: Xavier) produced 20 points, 8 rebounds and 9 assists and American-Greek point guard Nick Calathes (198-89, college: Florida) added 17 points and 9 assists respectively for lost side. Four Lokomotiv players scored in double figures. Zalgiris (9-1) have an impressive five-game winning streak. As mentioned above they are at the top of the standings, which they share with CSKA. Lokomotiv at the other side dropped to the fourth place with four games lost. Lokomotiv will play next round against CEZ Nymburk trying to get back on the winning streak. Zalgiris will try to continue on its current victory against seventh ranked Triumph Lyubertsy in Lubertsy.
