Regular Season Day 14: Zalgiris - VEF Riga 86-71 (19-21, 25-16, 26-23, 16-11)
Date: February 9, 2013 An interesting game for Lithuanian Zalgiris (13-1) which hosted in Kaunas 4th ranked Latvian VEF Riga (9-5). First ranked Zalgiris had an easy win 86-71. It looked good early as VEF Riga took an 2-point lead at the end of first quarter. But then Zalgiris had a 25-16 second period charge getting the lead and VEF Riga was not able to take back game control losing it eventually 71-86. Zalgiris forced 23 VEF Riga turnovers. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 22 assists. The best player for the winners was center Darjus Lavrinovic (212-79) who scored 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists (perfect from the field making all six shots). American swingman Tremmell Darden (194-81, college: Niagara) chipped in 9 points and 4 assists. Four Zalgiris players scored in double figures. American forward Will Daniels (203-86, college: Rhode Island) produced 22 points and Lithuanian center Antanas Kavaliauskas (207-84, college: Texas A&M, agency: Interperformances) added 6 points respectively for the guests. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Zalgiris have an impressive nine-game winning streak. Defending Lithuanian champion maintains first position with 13-1 record. Defending Latvian champion VEF Riga keeps the fourth place with five games lost. Zalgiris' next round opponent will be Enisey Krasnoyarsk (#7) at home where they are favorite. VEF Riga will play against CEZ Nymburk.
