Regular Season Round 49: Austin T. - Sioux Falls S. 93-94 (24-23, 30-24, 23-22, 16-25)
Date: February 27, 2013 The Austin Toros squandered a 12-point fourth quarter lead Wednesday, losing 94-93 to Sioux Falls on a buzzer-beating shot. Sioux Falls’ Seth Tarver grabbed the rebound with seconds left in the game on Andre Barrett’s miss, and his shot appeared to be going in when the Toros’ Chris Roberts poked it out and was called for goaltending with 0.3 seconds left. This gave the Skyforce their first and only lead of the second half. Austin dropped from first to third place in the Central Division with the loss. “This was really tough,” coach Taylor Jenkins said. “I called it a typical Toros loss where we play three good quarters then one that’s just glaringly bad.” Jenkins said turnovers are the biggest problem plaguing his team. They have had more than 20 in each of their last three games. Cory Joseph led the team with 20 points. His layup with 40 seconds left gave the Toros a 93-90 lead, but they then gave up two free throws defensively and could not score on their next offensive possession to set up the Sioux Falls game winner. “In the last five minutes, we let them get a couple fast breaks off of turnovers, and we had bad rotations and bad defensive play,” Joseph said. “They came back then on the last play they got a rebound and put it back in.” Despite the loss, Roberts had the highlight of the year for the Toros. With less than a minute left in the first quarter, Roberts took off from the paint, soared above 7-foot-5 Will Foster and threw down a one-handed dunk. Roberts finished with 11 points. “It was a lucky play. I’m athletic and I just finished the play,” Roberts said. “I had the lane, so I was just thinking ‘be aggressive and jump.’” With 5 seconds left if the third quarter, Patrick Sullivan picked off a pass, streaked to the other end and dunked it to give the Toros their biggest lead at the time, 77-67. They would stretch it to 83-71 with 8:50 left in the fourth on a Roberts three-pointer before getting outscored 23-10 the rest of the way. Courtesy of: statesman.com
