Australia U21 - USA U21 71:96 (21:32, 19:23, 16:20,
17:21)
Australia and USA started the Championship and it was a pleasure
to see that both teams finished it. A tremendous tournament
closed the doors for the FIBA U21 World Championship for Women.
USA defended their title beating Australia in the Final 96:71.
The North Americans claimed the Gold medals, while Silver went
to Australia.
Crystal Langhorne (188-C/F-86) was unstoppable for the
winners with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Three players from the
team followed her wit 14- Bonner,
Jolene Anderson (173-G-86) and Wiggins.
Jenna O'Hea (185-G/F-87) top-scored for the Sapphires with
23 points and 8 rebounds.
The Sapphires lost to the Americans by two points on opening day
in this tournament. Australia however started poor and was 21:32
behind after the opening quarter. The second stanza was more
balanced and half-time came on a 40:55 lead for USA.
Renae Camino (177-G-86) brought Australia closer, 48:60
after 3 minutes in the third quarter, but the americans did not panic and were
still leading 75:56 at the end of the third period. Even though Australia
resisted in the last period USA led the game to the happy end.
As a result USA defended their title that they achieved in
2003 in Croatia. Australia made a huge step to the second place as Brazil was
second last time, while Croatia finished third.

Russian squad could not take the medals of FIBA U21 World
Championship for Women that was held in Vidnoje, Moscow Region. France grabbed
bronze with a 67:61 triumph over Russia in the game for the third place. Four
different quarters from both teams brought the victory for the visitors.
Isabelle Yacoubou (195-C-86) led the way with 14 points and
13 rebounds.
Sylvie Gruszczynski (172-G-86) scored 11, while
Clarisse Costaz (170-G-86) and
Julie Barennes (183-F-86) finished with 10.
Ekaterina Lisina (198-C-87) top-scored with 15 points in
defeat.
Russia failed in the opening tip of the game and could hardly
stay in the game later. The French team stormed a 25:6 lead that led to 25:10
after first 10 minutes. In the second quarter Russia answered with 21:14 win
that left them behind at 31:39.
A brilliant third quarter, during which France reeled off 14
consecutive points, let them to lead 59:37. The question about the winner was
clear, however Russia did not give up. Behind by 22 to start the final quarter,
Russia tried once again to pull off an improbable fightback and they nearly
succeeded. With less than 5 minutes to go France led 61:53. The latter stayed
calm and triumphed for the third pace winning 67:61.

Belgium U21 finished on the fifth spot in FIBA U21
World Championship for Women. In the last game of the tournament
Belgium beat Canada 72:67. An 8-0 run late in the fourth quarter
gave the Europeans the higher spot in the Championship.
Sofie Hendrickx (186-F/C-86) top-scored for the first time
in the team scoring 19 points.
Sara Leemans (178-G/F-88) produced 15 points and made 12
rebounds, while
Virginie Michiels (179-F-87) added 11.
Kalisha Keane (-89) was the best in the losing effort with
22 points.
Both teams faced each other in the end of the Preliminary Round.
Canada beat Belgium that time in group A to finish third. A
deficit reached in the first half was saved till the last
minutes of the game. Canada celebrated 69:58 and improved to
3-2. Belgium had 2-3 and was the last team to qualify.
It was the Europeans' time to revenge as they desired the win
more than the opponents. Canada however led the game in the
beginning. The North Americans went on a 19:15 lead after the
opening quarter, but were quickly caught by Belgium in the
second. Canada improved in the third with 20:14 win and looked
forward to the end of the game.
In the end of the game
Sara Leemans and then
Virginie Michiels buried a jumper for a 66:62 Belgian lead.
Canada then twice turned the ball over, and the Europeans
eventually scored again, Marjorie Carpreaux sinking a pair of
free throws for a 68:62 lead. Belgium led the game to the happy
end and finished fifth in the tournament.

Brazil U21-Hungary U21 67:75 (17:24, 9:15, 19:12,

Hungary U21 clinched the 7th spot in FIBA U21 World Championship
for Women. In the game for that place Europeans overcame Brazil
75:67. Holding the game after the first half, Hungary lost the
third, but that was not an issue to lose the game.
Barbara Semsei (178-G-86) led the winners with 28 points.
Dora Horti (195-C-87) posted 16 points and made 9 rebounds,
while
Katalin Honti (178-G-87) added 13.
Franciele Nacimiento (-87) struggled for the South Americans
with 21 points and 18 rebounds.
Hungary started offensively as they reached 7 points gap in the
opening quarter. Europeans went on a 24:17 lead after the first
10 minutes of the game. In the second quarter Brazil could not
stay closer and Hungary even increased the lead. With 15:9 in
the second Europeans had 39:26 at the half time.
Meanwhile Brazil battled back in the third closing the gap to
49:45 in the end of it. In the fourth quarter South Americans
trailed by 65:67 with more than a minute in the game. The girl
of the game,
Barbara Semsei buried a three to return 5 points for
Hungarians. The game was over at 75:67 for Europeans that
clinched the 7th spot in the tournament. Brazil, being the only
representative from the continent finished on the 8th place.

Japan U21 finished the FIBA U21 World Championship for
Women on the 10th spot. In the game for the 9th place Japan was
defeated by Spain 70:80.
Asami Yoshida (165-G-87) exploded for 31 points but it
wasn't enough for Japan. Her team mate
Saori Fujiyoshi (-87) collected 12 in defeat.
Blanca Marcos (177-G/F-87) led the winners with 22 points,
while
Anna Cruz (175-G-86) ended up with 17.
Asians had a great start and finished the first with 20:17. The
Japanese stormed out to a 10-2 advantage and maintained a lead
midway through the second quarter at 27:24 after a Kozue Tanaka
three-ball. Only after that Spain woke up and went on a lead.
They created a 15-0 run and left the European team with a 39:27
advantage.
Blanca Marcos three-ball then sparked another 10-0 surge for
the Spanish and propelled them to victory. Japan had to admit
the loss and finished 10th in U21 World Championship.
As a total ut seems to be a good result for the Asian team.

Moreover Japan showed some really good games with the European

China defeated Mali 73:46 and finished 11th in FIBA U21
World Championship for Women. With a 14:2 in the second quarter
China proved that Asian basketball is a bit stronger now.
Meanwhile Mali won 2 quarters out of 4, however could not escape
a big loss.
Lu Lu (184-G-86) led the winners with 12 points, while
Fatoumata Bagayoko scored 18 for Mali.
China and Mali faced each other in the last game of the
preliminary Round. China rolled that time over Mali 90:59. A
27:9 lead in the opening quarter made no intrigue later in the
game.
Lu Lu top-scored for the winners with 16 points. Meiling
Zheng and
Zheng Bowen (-90) produced 12 points each. China finished
Group A with 1-4, while Mali stayed winless.
In the last game for both teams and not for the last place for
the winner China started with 18:9 lead after the first 10
minutes. The second quarter was a nightmare for the Africans as
they were defeated 2:14. By half-time, Mali's predicament had
grown worse with China's advantage 42:11. China finished 21 of
47 inside the arc, and six of 15 beyond it. The Asians escaped
the last spot, while Mali ended up on 12th.

The semifinals sent USA and Australia to the Final
USA and Australia will meet in the
Final of FIBA U21 World Championship for Women. Both teams upset
their opponents in the semifinals of the tournament. USA prevail
Russia, while Australia rolled over France 88:81.
Australia started with with a 8-0 run and were leading 25:14 at the
end of the first quarter. The second stanza was a complete different
story, France made a 13-0 run in 5 minutes to take the lead, 25:27.
Australia was only leading by one, 74:73 with 5 minutes remaining.
Later on the the Sapphires stayed cool with 88:81 win and advanced
to the Final.
Jenna O'Hea (185-G/F-87) led the winners with 21points, 8
rebounds and 6 assists.
Renae Camino (177-G-86) and Kathleen MacLeod added 13 points
each. A great game was shown by French
Sandrine Gruda (192-F/C-87) and Miyem. They combined together 51
point and made 18 rebounds.
USA beat the host team Russia 86:61. Trailing 19:9 with 3:14
remaining in the opening period Russia failed in the game.
Crystal Langhorne (188-C/F-86)'s jump shot gave the visitors
their first lead at 20:19. USA had already 40:25 at the half time.
Candice Wiggins (180-G-87) led the winners with 27 points, while
Crystal Langhorne added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Quarterfinals results and the whole coverage
Australia U21-Canada U21 98:57 (19:15, 20:17, 37:12, 22:13)
Canada stayed tough in the first half against Australia
in FIBA U21 World Championship for Women. In the game against
Australia's Sapphires Canada had to admit the level later. The
18-year old center
Cayla Francis
(192-C-89) carried the Australia team all the way in the opening
quarter then the Sapphires easily defeated Canada in the first
quarterfinal game of the 2007 U21 World Championships 98:57.
Australia will play a semifinal game tomorrow against the winner
of the France - Brazil match-up. Canada will wait for the
opponent and will struggle for the other places.

Canada appeared helpless at times against the strong offensive

half, they were smashed later. The game began to slip away from

47:34. Australia beat Canada in the third with an appropriate
score 37:12.
The game was almost already over but the Sapphires opened the
last quarter with a 11-0 run to seal the victory. The coaches
were able to give some playing time to all the bench players so
the starters were able to enjoy a little break before a deadly
semifinal game tomorrow.

Belgium could not advance to the semifinal of FIBA U21
World Championship for Women. The reason for it was a loss by
the favorites of the tournament- the United States. The latter
overwhelmed Belgium 104:53 and clinched the place in the
semifinal.
Courtney Paris (193-C-87) led the winners with 18 points.
Abigail Waner (181-G-86) added 15, while
Ashley Houts (168-G) chipped in 14. As usual
Sara Leemans (178-G/F-88) struggled for Belgium with 16
points. USA will take on hosts Russia today.
It was a good start for Belgium in the first minutes of the
game. Trailing only by 18:20 USA increased to 19:23 in the end
of the first. Belgium worked hard, but the US continued to pull
away by scoring six straight points for a 38:24 lead. In the end
of the second quarter USA pushed the tempo and won the quarter
27:9.
The second half started with the same rythm as the first where
only one team could be seen in the court. USA controlled the
whole game and won the next two quarters. They demolished
Belgium 25:12 in the third and proved with 29:14 in the last.

as both teams exchanged the leads. Russia extended their
lead to 11 but Hungary reduced to 52:49.
In the last quarter it was only one team in the court.
Russia smashed Hungary 19:6 and advanced to the semifinal.

The quarterfinals pairs and the stats of Preliminary Round
Preliminary Round has been finished in FIBA U21 World
Championship for Women. Eight teams out of twelve advanced to
the Quarterfinals of the tournament. China, Japan, Spain and
Mali will struggle for the 9-12 places.
Group A was the first to name 4 teams that qualified to the next
round. China and Mali lost all the games before the game with
each other and were eliminated from the group. In Group B three
teams struggled for the last 4th spot and Brazil, thanking
Hungary got the place in the Quarterfinals.
Sara Leemans (178-G/F-88) from Belgium was the top-scorer of
the Prelimianry round averaging 21.0 points per game.
Sandrine Gruda (192-F/C-87) from France showed some great
games and stays second with 19.8. Hungarian
Dora Horti (195-C-87) is third with 19.2 points per game.
Ouleymatou Coulibaly (-90) from Mali leads the Rebounds
stats averaging 10.4.

The last day of the Preliminary Round
Australia U21-Brazil U21 89:82 (17:18, 18:16, 22:27,

Australia secured the second spot in the pool even though
started the tournament with a loss.The Sapphires started this
last quarter with a 9-0 run to take back the lead 66:61 with 8
minutes left. The final minutes were very intense. The
brazilians played their guts out to come back in the game, with
4 minutes to go Brazil was leading 71:75 but Australia didn't
want to let it go. Jenna O'Hea made two consecutive 2+1 actions,
the Sapphires were back in front with 3 minutes left on the
clock. Brazil tried its best but
Cayla Francis sealed the game with two decisive baskets in
the last 1'33.

Japan lost the fourth game in the tournament, this time against
USA. The latter celebrated two wins in 2007 FIBA U21 World
Championship for Women today-the Independence Day and 98:57
victory.
Naomi Hayashi (-88) top-scored for Japan with 12 points and
Saori Fujiyoshi (-87) scored 9.
Crystal Langhorne (188-C/F-86) led the winners with 18
points and 7 rebounds. USA closed out preliminary round play at
5-0, while Japan at 1-4.
For USA the game did not have any important issues, however
Japan desired to qualify to another round. Of course the teams
like USA will never let you win even though they have nothing to
solve in the game. Moreover USA celebrated the Independence Day
and congratulated the fans with the win.
The USA jumped out of the gates strong and opened up a 21:7
lead. Asians reduced a bit and finished the first quarter at
15:24. A great quarter was demonstrated by Japan later as they
struggled with 17:18 in the second. Japan's
Naomi Hayashi started an 11-2 run and at the midway break
the USA's gap had diminished to 42:32.
By the third quarter buzzer Japan was trailing 43:70. There was
nothing else to catch in the game as Japan lost 57:98.

North Americans started with a tough defense and left Belgium at
11 after the first quarter. Belgium trailed 26:22 in a very
tight game midway through the period when
Kendel Ross (185-G/F-88) made a jump shot to start an 11-0
run. Canada led 33:22 at the half and looked better in the
court.
In the second half North Americans increased to 14 points gap
after a 17:14 in the third. Canada repeatedly worked to get the
ball inside and often drew fouls, allowing them to get to the
free throw line with more frequency. A 19:22 in the last quarter
for Belgium brought 69:58 for Canada.
Tomorrow in the Quarterfinals Canada will face Australia, while
Belgium will play against USA. Today is the day-off in the
Championship.

battled for the pride in FIBA U21 World Championship for Women.
In the last day of the Preliminary Round China rolled over Mali
90:59. A 27:9 lead in the opening quarter made no intrigue later
in the game.

(184-G-86) top-scored for the winners with 16 points. Meiling

(-90) produced 12 points each. China finished Group A with 1-4,
while Mali stayed winless.
Both teams realized that it was the game for the only win in the
Preliminary Round. The Asians led 15:8 with less than two
minutes remaining in the first quarter when they closed the
period with a 12-1 run that Mali never recovered from. In the
second quarter China grabbed another 10 points to the lead and
had 28 points deficit at the half.
In the second half the game was even, as both teams prepared for
9-12 places. China proved the stability in the first half,
winning the rest of the quarters. In the third quarter Mali was
upset by 2 points, while in the last only by one. On the stage
of 9-12 places China will play with Japan, while Mali faces
Spain. All the games resume tomorrow, Friday 6th.

two best teams of the Group A, Russia lost to France 71:73
letting the latter unbeaten. Probably the third quarter was
enough for the French team to hold the score.

Hungary meanwhile will play against Russia in one of the most
interesting Quarterfinals tomorrow.
Spain played two nice quarters with 16:12 in the first and 29:18
in the last. That was enough only for overtime where they had to
admit another European team win. Hungary won the second 19:10 to
finish the half at 29:26 lead. They increased to 9 points in the
end of the third beating Spain 21:15.
In overtime Hungary deserved the win more than Spain and won
79:76. Spain was eliminated from the tournament, however will
continue for 9-12 places. Hungary should be ready to have
another thriller with the hosts of the Championship.

Belgium moved to the third place in Group A of FIBA U21 World
Championship for Women after a tough game over China. Due to the
second half Europeans overcame 76:70.
Sara Leemans as usual was on the top with 24 points and 8
rebounds.
Marjorie Carpreaux added 16, while Michiels collected 10.
Zheng Bowen paced China with 17 points. Before the last game
in the group Belgium is 2-2, while China stays winless, 0-4.
Belgium clinched a quarterfinal place at the FIBA U21 World
Championship for Women and eliminate the Asian giants. Probably
Mali will join the latter.
China played the first half better and desired the quarterfinals
as well. Even though Belgium won the opening quarter 22:20,
China answered in the second. After Asians took a 48:45 lead
early in the second half many spectators believed in them. It
was however
Sara Leemans who led her team to a 9-0 run. Belgium won the
third with 19:14 and stayed closer of the quarterfinals ticket
later in the fourth. Tingting Ding's jump shot with 2:38
remaining closed the gap to 71:69 for China, who had trailed by

The second game of the tournament and the fourth for the teams
brought the win for Hungary in FIBA U21 World Championship for
Women. A 10-points deficit in the second quarter was held till
the end of the game and exchanged to 75:64 win over Brazil.
Katalin Honti top-scored for the winners with 19 points.
Dora Horti ended up with 18 points and 12 rebounds, while
Rita Ibolya Kollo added 11 points, including three threes.
Franciele Nacimiento paced Latin-Americans with 16 points
and 13 rebounds. Hungary now have two wins from four games in
Group B, while Brazil are 1-3.
A start of the game belonged to Brazilians. They opened the
second with 19:17 on the board. Hungary woke up at once as Dorti
added two more baskets in the burst while
Rita Ibolya Kollo drilled two more three-pointers. At that
time Europeans seized a 30:19 lead. The biggest lead happened
later with 34:21, but the Brazilians mounted a fightback and
closed the gap to just four points in the third quarter.
Brazil could come to 6 points gap only. As a result Hungary
mounted in the power in the end and won 75:64.
Australia U21-Japan U21 91:72
Australian National team U21 won the third straight game in FIBA
U21 World Championship for Women. The Sapphires clinched a
quarter final berth at the tournament defeating Japan 91:72.
Japan is 1-3 but still has a chance to advance. They will have
to beat USA tomorrow in the tournament and expect the losses
from Brazil and Spain.
Shizuka Uchida (-86) scored 13 points to lead Japan with
Akino Nakagawa (180-G-87) adding 12 points.
Elyse Penaluna led the winners with 18 points as
Renae Camino (177-G-86) finished with 15.
Australia secured the pool's second spot behind USA. The
Sapphires will play Brazil tomorrow in the last day of the pool
phase before a quarterfinal game against Belgium or Canada.
Australia was already leading 45:37 at half-time and the coaches
were able to give some playing time to everybody on the bench.
Kathleen MacLeod, the tournament's leader in assist dished 8
assists in this game. The Australian starting-five enjoyed some
rest in the garbage-time. They will also spend more time on the
bench in the next game against Brazil.
Japan has nothing to lose in the game against USA tomorrow.
The team realizes that they will have to win in order to

Russia celebrated the fourth straight win in FIBA U21 World
Championship for Women. The hosts of the tournament destroyed
Mali 94:25. The Africans managed to keep the game close with
only 10:17 in the opening quarter. Later on there was only one
team in the court that ruled the gamed.

top-scored for the winners with 15 points each.

Mali demonstrated a good game in the beginning of it. Nobody
expected a miracle from the visitors, however were pleased to
see the even game. That happened only in the beginning as Russia
had a 46:18 lead at the half.
The second half was a nightmare for Mali. In the third quarter
Africans were smashed with 30:4 and then in the last 18:3.
In the last day of the Preliminary Round both teams have
different tasks. As for Russia they will meet another undefeated
team, France for the first spot in the group. Meanwhile Mali
faces China for the first win of both teams.

Fatoumata Bagayoko struggled for Mali and finished with 15
points. Canada improves to 2-1, while Mali stay winless.
Ross scored first five points that helped Canada to go on 15:11
lead. North Americans increased to 20:11 in the end of the first
quarter. Mali would not back down as they started the second
quarter with a 6-2 run in the first three minutes. Mali ended
the quarter with back-to-back three point plays, leaving Canada
with a 42:30 lead heading into halftime.
The third quarter was a nightmare for Africans. With a 7-0 run
Canada held to 16:2 in the quarter. As a result they led 71:47
by that time. Even though Mali won the last quarter 15:13 they
did not reach Canada.

During the first period Sara

countered the good work of Isabelle Yacoubou. As a result France
only managed to lead by 1 point at the end of the first period
25:24. The Belgians finished the half with a flurry, did not
allow them to pull away and trailed just 44:43 at the break.
The third quarter brought 2 more points to France's squad lead
and gave them 3 points deficit before the last quarter. The
final period was just as intense and Belgium edged in front

after 35 minutes of play. Unfortunately Belgium could not resist
anymore. France won the last quarter 24:16 and won 91:80.

Brazil U21 got the first win in FIBA U21 World Championship for
Women. Last night South Americas overcame Japan 85:72. The game
was mostly done in the second half with the win in both
quarters.
Tatiane Balbino paced the winners with 22 points and 10
rebounds. Nacimiento and Dos Santos produced 17 points each and
made 25 rebounds together.
Japan started not so well as they trailed 14:21in the first
quarter. A while after Japanese battled back to lead 30:27.
Asians however could not see them on top before the half.
Priscilla Dos Santos sparked the run with back-to-back jump
shots and gave the South Americans 39:34 at half-time.
The third quarter started with Japanese attack. Yoshida leveled
the scores at 43:43 by splitting two free throws. Only after
that Brazil went on a 9-0 run to finish at 18:21 the third.
Brazil held the score to a bigger lead in the end finishing with
85:72.

Nikolett Somogyi top-scored with 16 points in the losing
effort.
USA went on a lead and dominated in the first quarter. The North
Americans satisfied with 23:16 after the first. Meanwhile
Europeans settled down in the second and produced a nice quarter
with 20 points each.
Just the third quarter began when Hungary came within four
points, 55:51. It was the last spurt by them. USA made a
double-digit winning 65:54 lead later in the third. .
In the fourth quarter the Americans had a 13-2 run that ended
with the USA in command 78:58. It was not a big deal too lead
the game to a happy end.

Women. Last night Russia demolished China 97:70. The score could
be even more, however Asians reduced a bit in the end and did
not let Russia to score 100.
Elena Danilochkina paced the winners with 21 points.
Savelyeva netted 20, while Lisina produced 10 points and 9
rebounds. Lu and Sun were the best for Asians as they scored 21
and 17 respectively.
That was a marvelous start of the hosts in the game. They
stormed out to a 23:11 lead with three minutes remaining in the
first quarter and pressed home the advantage the rest of the
way. One of the highest achievements they produced in the
opening quarter scoring 30 points. The second quarter was
dedicated to defense as Russian squad let China to finish at 9.
By half-time, the advantage was 52:25.
In the second half the game did not bring lots of interest as
two teams thought already of another games. China however pushed
Russia in the end of the game and won the last quarter. Asians
scored almost everything they shot and ended up at 27:20.
Meanwhile Russia was happy with the final score, 97:70.
The hosts are 3-0 in the standings, while China is vice versa.

however brought pleasure for the fans and spectators.
Russia beat Hungary 87:77, using a strong first quarter to have
a ten points lead.

points. Lisina had a great game with 20 points and 14 rebounds,
while Belyakova added 11.
Sara Leemans (178-G/F-88) was the best in defeat with 25
points and 7 rebounds. Russia goes to 2-0, while Belgium is 1-1.
Hungarian U21
tasted the first loss in the tournament after a loss to
Australia 72:82. O'Hea was unstoppable for the winners nailing
27 points.
Renae Camino (177-G-86) provided 19, while Bishop scored 11
points and made 10 rebounds. Hungary was led by 21 points from
Rita Ibolya Kollo (183-F-86) and 19 from Honti. Both sides
exchanged baskets for the majority of the opening term. O'Hea

Australia increased to 6 points lead after first two quarters as
they went to 47:41 lead.
A fascinating game provided Spain and Japan in last night. With
two same quarters in the second half Japan was luckier to have a
deficit from the first.

Nakagawa ended up with 15, while Tsukano added 13.

The latter received the second straight loss after a pity start

The summary of the first day
The first day of
FIBA U21 World Championship for Women already brought lots of
intrigue and fabulous games. Only the game between USA and
Australia deserved the Final of the competition. The hosts of
the Championship deserved a win over Canada. Spain won in double
overtime over Brazil.
The United States faced a 16-point deficit early on but stormed
back to stun Australia 90:88 in the opening game for both teams.
Australia was still leading 88:76 with only 44 seconds to go.
While everybody was thinking the game was over, the Americans
made a 14-0 run to claim a 90-88 win.
Candice Wiggins (180-G-87) led the winners with 30 points,
while Langhorne produced 24 points and 17 rebounds.
Spain beat Brazil in another thriller 90:86. Spain won the game
after two overtimes, but had the opportunity to win the game at
the end of the first overtime but missed the last shot.
Hungarian U21 overcame the representative from Japan 77:58. A
good start and a happy end followed the game for the winners.

together.
Dora Horti top-scored with 30 points, while Somogyi ended up
with 18 points and 11 rebounds.

The latter showed a good impression throughout the game and

for Women. The hosts of the tournament overcame Canada 83:56

percentage from the field with more than 40% inside the arc and
50% from the arc. Canada had an awful time shooting the ball,
making 14 of 47 inside the arc and five of 16 beyond it.

U21 Women
Championship will start tomorrow. Six games will be played each
day in the Preliminary Round. Spain and Brazil will open the U21
Women Championship at 9 a.m. Brazil was the second in the
previous Championship and will desire to prove the mastership
from the first games.
The Champion in Croatia, USA will play right after the first
game against Australia. After the third and the fourth game
between Hungary-Japan and France-China there will be a ceremony
of the opening. It is scheduled on June 29 at 5.30 p.m.
In the preliminary Round the twelve participating teams will be
divided into two groups of six teams each. Each team will play
all the other teams in its own group, total of 5 games for each
team. A total of 30 games will be played in the Preliminary
Round. The teams placed first through fourth in each group will
play for 1st to 8th place. The teams placed 5th and 6th in each
group will play for 9th to 12th place.
The semifinals are scheduled on July 7th at 6 p.m. and 8.15 p.m.
The Final game will be on July 8 at 8.15 p.m.

U21 Championship
for Women is on the way to start. Two more days left till the
start ceremony and the games. Today Eurobasket introduce a
venue-the place where the spectators will enjoy the tournament.
SK Vidnoje Basketball Hall will open the doors for all the games
in the Championship. A brand new Hall is one of the modern
constructions in Europe. It was built in 2006 and now belongs to
Moscow Region Government. The team that enjoys the home games of
the Hall is Spartak Moscow Region. The winner of Euroleague and
Russian Championship always has a great support from the fans.
That was the key factor in the Final Four of Euroleague and of
course a pleasure to play at home.
SK Vidnoje Basketball Hall has the capacity of 4000 spectators.
It is situated in Olimpinskaya Street 4. It is 80 km from
Sheremetovo Airport and 20 km from Domodedovo Airport. The Hall
is also approximately 20-30 km to the centre of Moscow. If you

Three more days
left till the beginning of the U21 Championship for Women in
Russia. Today Eurobasket introduces players, the people who will
struggle in the court.
The USA will be represented by the players who participate
mostly in NCAA tournaments. The USA will look to defend its
world title in U21 age group, open to athletes 21-years-old or
younger. As the team celebrated the win last time we decided to
give you the whole roster of the team. The final 12-member team
includes: Jolene Anderson,
DeWanna Bonner (193-G-87), Essence Carson, Laura Harper,
Ashley Houts (168-G), Crystal Langhorne,
Marscilla Packer (175-G), Kia Vaughn, Abby Waner,
Candice Wiggins (180-G-87), Paris and Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton.
The average height of the team is 6"0 (182 cm).
The silver medals team in the last Championship Brazil will
send 4 players with the name Santos. Fluminense duo Clarissa and
Ivana will represent Brazil's yellow-and-green jersey for the
first time in an international tournament.
France that was third last time will defend their best European
title. The team has already lost two friendly games before the
tournament against USA. In the first game France was led by
Sandrine Gruda (192-F/C-87) who hit 13 points for France. In
the second game Sylvie Gruz top-scored for the team with 14
points.
Russian National team is made up by the players mostly from the
National Championship. Three players however participated in
Europe last season, but will greatly fit the team.
Anastasia Anderson (174-G-86) plays for Romanian Biandra
Targoviste,
Irina Ryukhina (175-G-86) defends Lotos Gdynia and
Elena Reshetko (184-C-86) is in Catz Lappeenranta that is in
Finland.
All the other teams and their rosters will be covered as well
during the U21 Championship for Women in Russia.
4 Days Left: Teams
Eurobasket decided
not to wait and introduce the main news, events, players and
teams before the Tournament starts. As you know U 21
Championship for Women is scheduled for June 29. SK Vidnoje
Basketball Hall that is in Russia will open doors for the teams
and be a host arena for the Championship.
Today we would like you to introduce the teams that will
participate in the tournament. 12 teams will represent Europe,
North America, South America, Australia, Asia and Africa.
Eligible are all players who are born 1st January 1986 or later.
The 12 teams are divided into two groups-A and B. In Group A
there are Belgium, Canada, China, France, Mali and the host team
Russia. Australia, Brazil, Hungary, Japan, Spain and USA made up
group B.
The teams from the first to fourth places in each group will
play the Final Round for the first eight places. All other teams
will play classification games for the positions 9-12.
Many teams started to prepare for the tournament long time ago.
USA and France had a friendly game between each other as USA
overcame 71:57. Australia won the Four-Nation Pre-World
Championship Tournament in Spain over the weekend, winning all
of their three games. The Sapphires recorded powerful wins over
China 93:52, Brazil 94:77, and a gritty 75:68 victory over host
nation Spain.
USA won the previous Championship that was held in Croatia. That
time USA beat Brazil in the Final of the tournament. France
satisfied with the bronze medals.
