Romania tries hard to forget the starting loss at the EuroBasket in Division B campaign and seems to finally find their rhythm. Yesterday Romania to travelled to Albania and delivered the second win in Group B. They outgunned the hosts 80:66 behind 15 points and 9 rebounds from Catalin Burlacu (210-C-77, agency: Court Side). Romania thus improved to 2-2 record, while sending Albania to 1-3 record. Romania overcame a shaky start to cap the opening frame with a 9:4 rally for a 25:21 lead. Virgin Stanescu nailed 5 points for Romania early in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 7 points. The visitors maintained the gap and built a 43:35 advantage at halftime. George Helcioiu (180-G-78, agency: Interperformances) drained two trebles to make it 54:41 for Romania midway through the third quarter. George Helcioiu added another three-point bomb to give the visiting team a 64:48 cushion before the fourth term. Albania never came back to life in the final period and suffered the loss. Virgil Stanescu (207-C/F-77, agency: Interperformances, college: S.Alabama) had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Romania. George Helcioiu added 14 points, while Bogdan Popescu (201-F-78, agency: Stanley International, college: Alaska-Fairb.) had 13 points for the winners. Erkand Karaj (188-G-82) answered with 20 points for Albania. Marlin Sukaj (202-C-83) dropped 18 points in the loss.

Belarus fired down Albania today in Minsk at the EuroBasket in Division B tournament. it was the third straight victory for Belarusian National Team in Group B. Thus the team grabbed the lead in the pool. Albania in the meantime slipped to 1-2 record in the standings. The hosts had little problems en route to the victory. The teams got to a slow start as they struggled to find the opening basket for almost two minutes. Belarus however went on a 17:1 run to accumulate a comfortable lead late in the first period. Belarus secured a 21:9 advantage at the first intermission. Aliaksandr Pustahvar (200-G/F-85) and Korshuk teamed up for 9 points early in the second term and Belarus cleared off to a 20-point distance. The visitors failed to bounce back and trailed by 28 points at halftime. Vildan Mitku (200-F-83) and Gerti Shima (205-C/F-86) helped Albania to a 6:0 surge at the start of the second half. But it was snapped by a three-pointer from Alexander Kudrautsau (190-G-80, agency: AB Agency) as he ignited a 19:0 rally from the hosts. Belarus entered the fourth period leading by 37 points and eased past their opponents in the reminder of the contest. Alexander Kudrautsau nailed 15 points for Belarus. Mikalai Aliakseyeu (212-C-78, agency: Globalsports/Globalevents, college: Buffalo) added 13 points and 9 rebounds, while Aliaksandr Pustahvar netted 10 points for the winners. Gerti Shima dropped 13 points for Albania. Vildan Mitku finished with 11 points in defeat. Belarus will next take on Cyprus on the road, while Albania will host Romania on Saturday.

Swiss National Team got to a winning start of their Eurobasket in Division B campaign. They held off Albania in Lugano to jump on top of Group B. The teams entered the game bravely and traded baskets throughout the opening frame. They kept it close before Warner Nattiel (184-G-82) and Derek Stockalper (196-G/F-84, college: Cal Poly - SLO) fired from downtown to give the hosts a 27:22 lead. However 11 points early in the second period allowed Albania to draw things level at 35. Endrit Hysenagolli (-88) and Shima capped the first half with back-to-back baskets to seal Albania's lead at 48:44 at halftime. Vladimir Buscaglia (197-G-80, college: American) opened the second half with 5 straight points to ignite a 13:2 rally from the hosts as they retained the lead. Dusan Mladjan (199-G-86, agency: Interperformances) and Thomas Studer (198-F-84) gave Switzerland a 71:60 advantage with a quarter to go in the game. Vildan Mitku (200-F-83) nailed 5 points early in the fourth term to keep Albania in the race. But treys from Vladimir Buscaglia and Dusan Mladjan gave the hosts some breathing space and they never allowed Albania to come close enough for a strike. Dusan Mladjan topscored with 30 points for Switzerland. Vladimir Buscaglia added 19 points for the winners. Vildan Mitku answered with 22 points and 8 rebounds for Albania. Endrit Hysenagolli notched 19 points and 13 boards in defeat. Switzerland will next face Cyprus, while Albania will have a bye round on Wednesday.

It was the first loss for Efes Pilsen at this stage of the tournament. Efes Pilsen playing at the Abdi Ipekci Sports Hall claimed a narrow 13:12 lead after the opening frame and stretched it to 30:19 in the second term. But Bootsy Thornton scored 6 points in a 9:0 run to erase the deficit to 2 points at 28:30. Eze then tied the scoreline at 30 with seconds past in the third term. Montepschi took over and started to build their lead. Romain Sato capped the frame with a jumper to give the visitors a 49:44 lead after three quarters of action. Scoonie Penn and Ermal Kurtoglu regained the lead for Efes Pilsen early in the fourth term with a couple of treys. The game remained close throughout the fourth period and Terrell McIntyre connected from downtown to make it 69:69 with under a minute to play in regulation. No team was able to deliver at the crunch time and the game moved into overtime. Romain Sato opened the extra period with a three-pointer but it was matched by Drew Nicholas and Scoonie Penn as Efes Pilsen remained in driving seat. Ksystof Lavrinovic once again tied things up at 76 with free throws. Ksystof Lavrinovic got fouled again and converted two more free throws to spur Montepaschi in front. Drew Nicholas failed to deliver, while Bootsy Thornton was accurate to stretch Siena's lead. Efes Pilsen had enough time to get to Siena but missed decisive shots and lost the battle. Ermal Kurtoglu produced 20 points and 7 boards for the hosts. Andre Hutson scored 14 points for Efes Pilsen. Bootsy Thornton had 18 points for Montepaschi. Claudio Ndoja (198-G/F-85) 's Capo D'Orlando overcame Lottomatica Roma 82:71. |

by Eurobasket News - Oct 22, 2007 | |  | In the second day of the SouthEastern European Games in Thessaloniki, Bulgarian Juniors (U 18) national team defeated their opponents from Albania with 81-67 (31-8, 14-19, 18-23, 19-17). After the disastrous loss from our neighbours Turkey yesterday by 21 points, today the players of head coach Yulian Aladzhov came out highly motivated and deserved that win. The Bulgarians performed marvelous during the first quarter (31-8), crushing the outsiders from Albania. Until the end of the fight they did not have any problems and it was clear for everyone in the gym who the winner would be. The Albanians tried to change the situation on the court, but they had strengths only for a 14-point-difference. For the team of Bulgaria, the best again was Aleksander Aleksandar Yanev (198-F-90) who scored 28 points. Kyosev added 21, while Marincheshki and Zhelev finished with 15 points each. For Albania, Florian Ismeti scored 23 points and his teammate Tzani made 21. The other game from preliminary group A today is Turkey versus Montenegro. Tomorrow our guys will play the last game of the first stage of the competition. At 17.00h they face their coevals from Montenegro.
