Montenegro U20 - Ukraine U20 89:68
Montenegro U20 National team claimed the first title in the history of independent country after they beat Ukraine in the Final in Warsaw. Ukraine was the only undefeated team in the tournament but could not continue their strike in the decider. Montenegro had a huge start to the game as they ran away to a 14:0 lead after 5 minutes of action. Vladimir Dasic later drained a trey to complete the first quarter with Montenegrin team ahead 26:5. Confused Ukrainian team virtually could not get it going and the gap kept growing in the second frame. Boris Savovic (207-F-87)'s dunk midway through the second quarter marked a 40:15 advantage for Montenegro. They drove to a 51:25 dominance at halftime and continued to roll in the second half. Ukraine bounced back late in the third when Yuriy Lokhmanchuk (197-G/F-87) and Maxym Korniyenko hit a pair of three pointers to ignite a 16:0 run. Ukrainian team came as close as 20 points at the end of the third quarter but it was obviously not enough. Boris Savovic and Suad Sehovic (195-G-87, agency: Ultimate Sports Agency) nailed a couple of jumpers to start the final frame and left no questions about the outcome. They eased to a historic win at the end and celebrated the title.
Montenegro had 5 players to score in double figures. Suad Sehovic had 18 points to topscore for the winners. Goran Martinic (187-G-87) contributed 17 points off the bench for Montenegro. Yuriy Lokhmanchuk responded with 22 points for Ukraine. Oleksandr Sizov (200-F-88) added 13 points in a loss.
Montenegro committed just 10 turnovers forcing Ukraine to 22. They also shot solid 57.1% from the field. Ukraine at the same time were dominating the boards outrebounding the opponents 37:32.

Game for the 3rd place
Finland U20-Germany U20 76:73 (31-26, 20-13, 13-22, 12-12)
Finland took bronze in U20 European Championship for men in Warsaw. With 72:73 against Germany Koivisto made a three and then Brace made one of two free throws to bring the win for Finland.

Game for the 5th place
Estonia U20 - Poland U20 58:74
Estonian U20 team lost their final game at the European championship Division B in Poland. In the encounter for the 5th-6th spot Estonia were rallied over by Poland 58:74. The outcome was mainly built in the opening frame when Polish players established a 20:5 lead. They maintained the distance throughout the second quarter and were in front 41:30 at halftime. Estonia tried to come from behind in the third. Tarmo Tartes jumper made it 40:47 with more than 6 minutes to go in the third. But Poland replied with a 7:0 run to roll back to a 14-point deficit. Mihkel Niine capped the third quarter with two free throws to make it 49:57 entering the final frame. However Poland never allowed Estonian team to come any closer and successfully sealed the victory at the end.
Kamil Pietras (207-F-88) provided 20 points and 19 rebounds for Poland. Kamil Michalski (183-G-87) nailed another 13 points for the winners. Tanel Kurbas (195-F-88) had 14 points for Estonia. Timo Eichfuss (199-F-88) poured in 10 points in a losing effort.
Poland had an impressive advantage under the rims 58:31. They also held Estonia to just 34.4% from the field and forced them to 22 turnovers.

Game for the 7th place
Slovak Republic U20 - Great Britain U20 75:68
Slovakia had two days of rest before they upset Great Britain once again at the U20 European championship in Poland. Two days after a stunning 84:69 victory Slovakia celebrated another win and claimed the 7th spot in the final ladder. Great Britain had a better start to this one as they put up an early lead. Ashley Hamilton dunked the ball home to ensure a 17:14 advantage for Great Britain at the start of the second frame. Slovakia remained close throughout the second quarter and Justin Sedlak (203-F-87)'s trey marked 1-point deficit at halftime 34:35.
Great Britain continued to stay in front before Miroslav Vansa free throws did not put Slovakia ahead. Slovakia actually rolled to a 14:0 run and established a 53:42 lead. They controlled the game throughout the final frame but Great Britain climbed as close as 5 points with 2 minutes left in regulation. However Justin Sedlak was perfect from free throw line to seal the win for Slovakian team.
He topscored for the winners with 22 points and 6 rebounds. Roman Vido (204-C-88) contributed 17 points and 10 boards for Slovakia. Orlan Jackman (196-F-88) nailed 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in a loss.
Slovakia had an advantage in the paint outrebounding the opponents 33:25. They converted 58.5% of field goals and forced Great Britain to massive 27 turnovers.

Game for the 9th place
Sweden U20 - Belgium U20 84:82
Swedish U20 National team claimed the 9th spot at the European championship in Poland. They celebrated a dramatic win over Belgium in the last encounter of the tournament.
In extra close first frame Jon Jonsson's free throws secured 20:19 lead for Sweden after the opening quarter. Belgium had a momentum in the second quarter and surged ahead to 40:34 advantage with 2 minutes to go in the half. Vincent Verbeeck (198-F-87) than converted three straight points to put Belgium up 43:36 at halftime.
Ludovic Pourtoit's three pointer early in the third quarter marked a 40:51 deficit for Sweden. They needed Jonas Jerebko (204-F-87) nailing 7 points to cut the deficit. Late in the frame Johan Petter Wenehult added two more points from the charity stripe to level the teams at 61.
The teams were still drawn 80:80 with 31 seconds remaining in regulation. Sean William Smith (196-G-87) then knocked down a jumper to put Sweden ahead. Christian Koutras added one free throw to maintain the lead. Belgium answered with two converted free throws from Brecht Guillemyn (192-F-87). But another free throw from Koutras ensured a hard victory for Sweden.
Jonas Jerebko led all scorers with 28 points and 15 rebounds. Tom Liden (202-F-87) contributed 19 points in a win. Brecht Guillemyn ensured 19 points and 7 assists for Belgium. Vincent Verbeeck netted 15 points as Belgium finished the championship at the 10th spot.

Game for the 11th place
Ireland U20 - Austria U20 67:66
Ireland completed the U20 European championship in Poland on a high note. They grabbed a narrow victory over Austria to clinch the 11th overall spot in the final classification.
Both teams kept it close in the opening quarter and Roman Fenzal nailed a basket at the end of the quarter to put Austria in front 23:20. They maintained the dominance throughout the second quarter and finished it leading by 2 points 36:34.
Scott Kinevane (173-G-87) drained a trey to lift Irish team to a 37:36 at the start of the third quarter but Maximilian Kunovjanek and Lukas Sallomon kept it going for Austria and secured a 53:43 advantage entering the final frame. Austrian players still led 60:52 with 5 minutes remaining in regulation when Ireland took the initiative and started cutting the deficit. Cian Nihill's two three pointers tied the score at 66 with 35 seconds left. Austria committed a turnover and Carleton Cuff (190-F-87) hit one free throw to make it 67:66 for Ireland. Thomas Schreiner (195-G-87) tried to save the game for Austria but his long bomb missed the target.
Carleton Cuff chipped in 15 points for Ireland. Eoin McDermott (194-C-87) produced 14 points and 18 rebounds in a winning effort. Belgium had 21 points from Richard Poiger (206-F-87). Thomas Schreiner added 12 points in defeat.
Austria outrebounded Ireland 45:43, but comitted 19 turnovers and shot purely from free throw line (50%).

FINAL

Serbia U20 - Spain U20 87:78 (10:12,29:21,25:26,23:19)

Serbia defended their U20 European Championship Men title with Most Valuable Player Milos Teodosic (196-G-87) scoring 22 points. In the Final game Serbia beat Spain 87:78. You can read about this game in our previous article by Eurobasket correspondent Dragan Jankovski.

Game for the 3rd place
Italy U20-Russia U20 74:63 (20-12, 18-18, 20-14, 16-19)
Italy U20 being the co-hosts of the tournament celebrated the third place in U20 European Championship Men. In the game for the 3rd place Italy defeated Russia 74:63 and left the latter without medals.The first and the third quarters were nicely won by Italians who triumphed the third.
Luigi Datome led the winners with 26 points. Pietro Aradori (192-G-88) netted 11, while Lorenzo D'Ercole (190-G-88) posted 9. Alexey Shved (195-G-88) top-scored for Russia with 14 points.

Russian squad started the game leading 11:8 but then could not stop Italians. The latter used 23-3 run to grab to finish the first at 20:12. It laso lasted to the middle of the second that gave Italy a 31:14 lead.
Alexey Shved did not give up for the losing side and with his help Russia stayed trailing 38:30 at half-time.
The third quarter was the final for Italians as they increased their lead to 17 points midway through the third. The co-hosts went for a small break before the final quarter having 58:44. Although Russia had a 9-0 run in the last they could not prevent the loss.
Italians and the spectators celebrate the bronze as Russia returns without medals.

Game for the 5th place
Slovenia U20-Israel U20 90:81 (17-28, 17-20, 21-19, 35-14)

Israel U20 could not grab the fifth place at the U20 European Championship Men. In the game for that place Slovenia took their spot. Israel blew a 20-point lead and allowed co-hosts Slovenia to win.
Matej Krusic (211-F/C-87) paced the winners with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Emir Preldzic (206-F-87, agency: Beo Basket) ended up with 16 points and Rok Perko (178-G-87) added 14. Omri Casspi (204-F/G-88, agency: Interperformances) poured in 25 points and 6 rebounds in the losing effort.

Israelis opened game with great performance hitting huge triples with great percentage. The team had a great first quarter winning 28:17. The co-hosts were thrilled and could not notice support from the fans that supported them all the time. In the second quarter nothing had changed as Israel increased to 48:34 at the half-time.
In the third quarter
Omri Casspi with a lay-up gave Israel 16 points deficit. That was the end of the Israeli powerhouse. Up 67:55 going into the fourth, Israel's lead was reduced to 74:68 with 6 minutes left. Slovenia closed the game on a 12-3 run to finish at 90:81.

Game for the 7th place
Turkey U20-Bulgaria U20 97:88
Turkey snapped up a 97-88 victory over Bulgaria on the final day of EC and had to be contented with the seventh place after a dissapointing serie of losses. Bulgaria got off to a better start in the first quarter but Turkish U20 NT managed to outrebound their opponents and dominate the paint thanks to centers Oguz Savas (208-C-87) and Mutlu Demir (205-C-87) who totally hit 35 points. On the other hand Chavdar Kostov (190-G-88)'s game high 26 points was not enough for Bulgaria. Despite not having Cenk Akyol (200-G-87, agency: FCM) and Ersan Ilyasova (208-F-87) Turkey tried to play hard during the tournament but as a result Nihat Izic's famous 87 generation registered a dissapointing result at the end of EC.
 
Game for the 9th place
France U20-Croatia U20 91:82 (27-25, 19-16, 20-20, 25-21)
Croatia U20 finishes 10th in U20 European Championship Men losing their last game to France. With a tough game throughout 4 quarters, Croatia did not win any of them. French squad pushed the opponents with 25:21 in the last to finish 9th. Nando De Colo (195-G-87) led the winners with 18 points. Aaron Cel (203-F-87) collected 16, while Fabien Causeur (190-G-87) added 16. Nino Vlaic (208-C-87) top-scored for Croatia with 23 points.
Croatia U20 was leading in the whole first quarter against France. They reached 4 points (18:14) after
Ante Tomic (217-C-87) made a lay-up. France thanks to Nando De Colo's three finished the first with 27:25.
In the second quarter Croatia had the biggest lead at 35:27. It was
Nino Vlaic who made a jump shot to give Croatians 8 points advantage. A 13-0 run by the French squad lifted them on top with 46:41 at the half.
In the third quarter France increased the lead to 11 points, but Croatia reduced to 66:61 after 30 minutes.
In the last quarter
Franjo Bubalo (192-G/F-88) cut the deficit to 83:79, but that was the final spurt for Croatia. France led the game to 91:82 win leaving croatia on the 10th spot.

Game for the 11th place
Georgia U20-Lithuania U20 70:81 (17-30, 20-16, 17-18, 16-17)
Lithuania U20 won the game for the 11th place last night. Georgia could not wake up after a 17:30 in the first as Lithuania celebrated 81:70 win.
Remigijus Trakimas (204-C-87) paced the winners with 21 points and 7 rebounds. Evaldas Baniulis (201-F-87) produced 13 points, while Ernestas Ezerskis (195-G-87) and Edvinas Ruzgas (200-F-87) had 12 points each. Giorgi Shermadini (216-C-89) finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds in defeat.

It was the game for two different teams in the tournament, especially their tasks for it. Georgia finished 12th in their first-ever season in U20 Division A and could be glad with it. Meanwhile Lithuania had the worst participation in the European Championships.

Somehow to end on the lucky note Lithuania rushed to score. The Baltic team finished the first with 30:17 that allowed them to control the game. In the second quarter Georgia stayed closer as Didia's three made the score 32:40.
Lasha Parghalava (190-G-87) with another three sent the teams to the interims with 37:46.
In the second half Lithuania won both quarters with 1 point deficit. A 18:17 and 17:16 brought Lithuania 11th place in European Championship.

  Serbia defended European Championship title !! - July 16, 2007
Serbian U20 National Team defended European Championship title celebrating over, until tonight, undefeated Spain in the final game 87:78. Serbia lost the opener on EC against Slovenia and it looks like they needed it because after that moment team played much better and won all games until the end. Serbia had very good shot percentage behind the arc 11/25 (44 %) but also lot of troubles with free throws, just 12/24. In the middle of first quarter Spain had lead 11:6 and later 27:21 but in the last 4 minutes of second period Serbia made run 18:4 and went on the half time with plus 6. From the 25th minute until the end Serbia all the time had advantage of 5 or more points. Once again Milos Teodosic (196-G-87) was team leader. He collected 22 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds. Milenko Tepic (202-G-87, agency: Beo Basket) also showed great performance and finished game with 20 points and 5 rebounds. Sergi Llull (178-G-87) posted 24 while Pau Ribas (182-G-87) stopped on 13 points and 4 assists for Spain.

Point guard Milos Teodosic is voted to be the MVP of the European Championship while Dragan Labovic (208-C/F-87) is in the best five.

In the game for the third place co-host Italy outplayed Russia 74:63 and won bronze medal. Slovenia beat Israel 90:81 and finished on the 5th place.

  Division B Semifinals: Ukraine faces Montenegro in the Final - July 15, 2007

Ukraine and Montenegro will fight for the Gold tonight in Division B of U20 European Championship. Both teams did not have any difficulties in reaching the Final. Their victories in the semifinals were too confident.
 
 
Ukraine U20 - Germany U20 80:56
Ukrainian U20 team had successfully completed the task and drove into the European championship Final. A perfect start to the semifinal clash against Germany proved proved the difference and lifted Ukraine to an overall win.
Ukraine could not have dreamt of a better beginning as they knocked Germany out with a 14:0 run in the opening frame. They held Germany scoreless for more than 5 starting minutes before Frieder Diestelhorst (201-F-87) nailed a jumper. Ukraine reacted with another 14:4 run that saw Germany trail by 22 points after the first quarter 6:28.
Germany tried to find their way back in the seconf quarter as they cut the deficit to 18:30. But consecutive plays from Maxym Korniyenko (201-F/C-87) secured a safe distance for Ukrainian side. They were up 45:29 at halftime and posted first 4 points of the second half to maintain the gap. Sergiy Gladyr (196-G/F-89) and Oleksandr Sizov knocked down two straight three pointers to make it 62:38 for Ukraine midway through the third quarter. Germany struggled to get control of the game and could not get any closer. The teams went scoreless for more than 3 minutets in the final frame. Dmytro Gliebov finished the game with a perfect trey to mark a 80:56 victory for Ukraine. They will now play in the championship Final against Montenegro tonight.
Oleksandr Kolchenko (196-F-88) (196-F-88) topscored for Ukraine with 19 points. Sergiy Gladyr added 18 points in a winning effort. Frieder Diestelhorst had 20 points in defeat.
Ukraine outrebounded their opponents 40:33 and forced them to 19 turnovers.
Germany plays against Finland for the 3rd spot today.

Montenegro U20 - Finland U20 83:53
Montenegro is one step from the U20 European championship title after they edged Finland 83:53 in the semis yesterday. An impressive defence from Montenegrin team held Finland to just 1 point in the opening 7 minutes of the game and alowd them to spur off to a 16:1 advantage. They completed the first frame 21:5 ahead. Dasic play midway through the second frame marked a 20-point lead by Montenegro. Finland however tried to stay in race and Antti Vanjoki (188-G/F-88) crowned the first frame with a trey to come within 18 points.
Juho Nenonen drained five straight points at the dying stage of the third quarter to put Finland as close as 38:51 but Dasic and Martinic regained the lead with a couple of successful offensive plays. Finland had little chances to save this one in the final quarter and Montenegro cruised to a confident 83:53 victory keeping in mind today's Final against Ukraine.
Vladimir Dasic (208-F-88) was on fire scoring 25 points and grabbing 14 rebounds for Montenegro. Suad Sehovic (195-G-87, agency: Ultimate Sports Agency) ensured 15 points for the winners. Gerald Lee (206-F-87) was the only Finnish player to score in double-digits as he nailed 11 points. Antti Vanjoki produced 9 points in a loss.
Montenegro shot impressive 60.6% of field goals and outrebounded Finland 41:32.
Montenegro will clash with Ukraine in today's decisive game. Finland sees Germany to fight for Bronze.

  Division A Semifinals results. Serbia will face Spain in the Final- July 15, 2007
Spain U20 and Serbia U20 will meet each other in the Final of U20 European Championship Men. Both teams had fabulous wins over the opponents in the semifinals.
Spain started not in a good note against Russia. The latter won the opening quarter and lost only in the end. Spain celebrated 76:69 win and advanced to the Final. Pau Ribas (182-G-87) led the winners with 21 points. Russia were paced by 14 points and eight rebounds from Andrey Vorontsevich (204-C-87) while Alexey Shved had 13 points.

In another game Serbia upset co-hosts Italy 77:62. Nikola Dragovic (203-F-87, agency: Beo Basket) and Milos Teodosic (196-G-87) produced 40 points for the winners. Italy started better and won the opening tip with 8-2. Serbia answered with some good runs and won the first and the second quarters respectively. Marco Ammannato scored a break-away layup and Daniel Hackett (196-G-87) and Aradori drained back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to 38:28.
The game with the result was clear before the whistle. Serbia stormed with 30:21 in the last and grabbed the final place.
