B1: Galatasaray Istanbul (TUR) -
Sunair Oostende
(BEL) 62-58 (Breaux 17, Davison 13 Goethals 12, Lollis 11)
Bad play of GS coupled with good play fo Sunair made it hard for GS. The difference
was lasrge at one point but GS blew it. GS is believe it or not an inexperienced team
coming into Europe. This will be really hard for GS.

Istanbul (TUR) - HKK Brotnjo Citluk (BIH) 84-53 (Praskievicius
18, Tamsoz 15, Thompson 15, Woolridge 15 Goluza 16, Coleman 10)
An easy win for Besiktas with good plays from Thompson. They should not have problem
passing this one. If they pass and GS passes, they meet at ¼ finals.

While the qualification of Ducato was expected, some Italian fans hoped for the
qualification of Rome too. But all went wrong. Now, Attilio Caja will be fired, and the
name of the next head coach will be announced today. In "pole position" there is
Valerio Bianchini, last season at Teamsystem, the only coach who managed to win an Italian
League title on the bench of Roma, in 1982-83 (the sponsor was Banco di Roma)

- Estudiantes
Madrid (ESP) 82-84 (Jaumin 17+6ast, De Saever 12, Lollis 12 - Thompson 20 Reyes 18, Martinez 15,
Vandiver 14)
Wonderful game for young guard Gonzalo Martinez that scored 15 points and a crucial
buzzer 3 pointer that helped his team to win an important game. The game was always tied
(46-40 in the first half) but Estudiantes is the main favourite to get into the next
round. (Pablo Malo de Molina)
D2: Panionios Athens (GRE)
- FC Barcelona
(ESP) 71-80 (Sims 18, Karagoutis 21 - Djordjevic 20, Gurovic 18, Rentzias 16, Alston
9+11reb)
Great game for Barcelona that was leading 25-51 but let Panionos to recover thanks to
Sims and Cooper and the game went tied (60-61), but Barcelona started playing well again
and won the game. They have it easy to get into the final. (Pablo Malo de Molina)
(10/03/99)
D1: Estudiantes Madrid (ESP) - Sunair Oostende (BEL) 75-61 (Vandiver 26, Reyes 12,
Martinez 10+9reb Jerome 12+9reb, Jaumin 11)
It was a tough game for Estudiantes. The belgian team took the lead in the beginning of
the game (4-9, 10-11) but Estudiantes came back and destroyed Ostende (27-17). But then,
the belgian team defended with a "zone" and went to the halftime with a 3 point
lead (30-33). But Estudiantes managed to come back and despite Chandler Thompson having a
very importan injury in 23th minute (he fell down in a bad position and broke his
ligament. He will be out for at least 6 months) they went 7 up (40-33). Sunair Ostende
tried to recover (55-50) but a key three pointer made by Azofra decided the game. Till
this moment, nothing to do for the belgian team and Estudiantes will be in the final game.
(Pablo Malo de Molina)
During the game Eric Struelens (center of Real
Madrid) was co-commentator of RTBF, the Belgian public television station which broadcasts
in Wallonie and broadcasted the game in the french speaking part of Belgium. After the
game Struelens and RTBF decided to go out for dinner in a famous restaurant in Madrid. The
center player of Real parked his "Grand Cherokee" at the restaurant and trusted
that the guard would take an eye on it. But when they went out, the car was stolen.
Despite there was an alarm, the expensive jeep of Struelens disappeared. The Grand
Cherokee was a replacement car because his BMW was at his car dealer for repair. In the
car there was a lot of broadcasting material of RTBF. So the value of what was stolen is
more than $100,000. They went to police but policemen told them that the chance to see it
back is less than zero. RTBF lost the tapes they recorded in Spain so not only Struelens
was rather unhappy. (Johan Dobbelaere, Focus Televisie)
D2: FC Barcelona (ESP) - Panionios Athens (GRE) 91-61

Miguel 14, Azofra 13, Jimenez 9, Robles 9, Martinez 6, Barcenas 4, Reyes 4, Brana 1
Djordjevic 20, Alston 16, Gurovic 8, Rentzias 8, Fernandez 7, Rodriguez 3, Duenas,
Junyent)
Wonderful game where everybody fought a lot. And if it was not
enough, Estudiantes players´ gave Barcelona´s ones a lesson of how playing a key game.
Everybody did it well, inside, outside, a great game. Estudiantes had lost Chandler
Thompson in the semi-finals and as Derrel Washington could not play because of FIBA´s
laws, they had problems in the SG position. But the problems got incresead when Barcenas
got his nose broken after crashing against Gurovic. It was in the first minutes. The game
was tied till the start of the second half when Estudiantes manage to wide the differences
to 10 points (63-53). They even had 20 points of margin but at the end Barcelona could
come back after recovering to be losing only by 13. At the end, Estudiantes had a lot of
stars fouled out and played the last minute with Braña and Felipe Reyes (both juniors) in
the court. If Estudiantes had had another player fouled out I think they would have had to
finish the game with 4 players. (by Pablo Malo de Molina)

Very exciting second game of Korac Cup final. FC Barcelona was
defeated in the first game by 16 points, but now they showed great basketball, crushing
Estudianted by
27. So FC Barcelona is the Korac Cup winner for 1999.
