Additional preliminary round (15.+22.09.99)
10. Lugano (SUI)- Seixal (POR)
83-71 (Polite 10, Washington 19, H.Mrazek 26, Valis 6, Stevic
16, Blake 2 - Carreira 7, Nascimento 17, Rodrigues 8, De Castro 7, Adams 17,
Stouiga 15)
H. Mrazek made the last of his 7 three pointers at the very end and could
have ensured a safe trip to the second round for Lugano. Stevic was very good
scoring 14 points in the second half.
11. Huima (FIN) - Ulm (GER)
100-87 (Holmstadt 27, Ilmonen 24, Lehtoranta 14,
Maattanen 14, Rantaniva 11 – Svitek 23, Bourgain 20, Castellanos 10)
12. Leopards London (ENG)- IRB
Reykjanesbaer (ISL) 75-111 (Peppisch

Einarsson 9, Roberts 6, Stefánsson 5, Ragnarsson 3)
IRB,
which is Njardvík and Keflavík in one team in Korac Cup, played home against
London Leopards. It was an easy game for IRB who won 111-75 after leading
at half time, 53-37. IRB played physical defense and London´s players
were not happy with how physical IRB played. IRB shoot very well from
outside and it was surprising how open shoot they got the whole game. The
leopards had no answers to IRB offense and IRB had 14 3-pointers. All the
players played well for IRB and it did not matter who was in the game because
all of them are NT players. Purnell Perry played very well for IRB and
Hermann Hauksson showed that he has great shooting skills. Guđjón Skúlason,
Fannar Ólafsson, Teitur Örlygsson, Hjörtur Harđarson and Gunnar Einarsson
all played excellent game both on defense and offense. For the Leopards
were Peter Peppisch and Robert Youngblood the only players who played descent.
The other players played bad and specially Kenya Capers who did not score a
single point second half and was ejected from the game after hitting Fridrik
Ragnarsson in the head with few minutes left. After winning the game with
36 points, IRB should be save to play in next round.

Because
of a hall in non-accordance with FIBA's regulations, Vacallo played last night
in Cucciago, near Cantů (Italia). Only 100 tifosi had done the trip, so it was
regning there a glacial atmosphere.
Antibes lined up for the first time his American player Duane Woodward
(19pts and a good performance) and his Americano-Portuguese Jonathan Fedor (2pts
for 8 minutes). It is also when Antibes began to play zonal-defence that Vacallo
took an important advantage. Thanks to Lisicky (who belongs to Benetton
Treviso), who scored four consecutive points, Vacallo could keep an advantage of
8pts until the halftime. In second period, every time Antibes was trying to
rejoin to the score, the Ticinese were reacting with their shooters (Lisicky, 21
pts at 4/8 at 3pts, Opacak and Sassella 8pts each one.)
Sluc Nancy (FRA) - Huima Aanekoski (FIN) 77-75
2 Round, 13/10/99
ÍRB
(ISL) - Huima (FIN) 84-76 (Perry 23, Roberts 17 – Rantaniva 21, Maattanen 17)
It
was not a very well played game by either team. ÍRB missed a lot of shots
but played good defense. Huima led the first half by 4-8 points thanks too
good performance by Tero Rantaniva and Sami Lethoranta. Huima led at half
time, 33-38. It was another team who showed up for ÍRB in second and they
scored 51 points and played good defense. ÍRB played without their best
pure shooter, Guđjón Skúlason, who got injured 2 days before the game and
that did hurt the 3-point shooting. The best players for ÍRB were Chianti
Roberts who played very well on defense and rebounded well on both ends.
Hjörtur Harđarson also played well and Teitur Örlygsson had his moments.
For Huima were Tero Rantaniva, Jouni Maattanen and Toni Ilmonen the best
players. Juomi Maattanaen is an excellent shooter from 3-point range and
had 5 3-pointers in the game. Toni Ilmonen is a quick and tall point guard
who can drive very well to the basket and the Icelandic guards had trouble
stopping him and had to foul him. (by Benedikt Gudmundsson)

Koller 13, Valis 7, Stevic 20, Blake 6, Darconza. (Lugano without Washington)
Just two alerts for Lugano against the Islanders of Reyjkanesbaer. A difficult
beginning of the game (10-2) before rejoining little by little to the score,
because of a particularly high rhythm, thanks to two playmakers together on the
floor, Koller and Darconza, and to guard Harold Mrazek. In five minutes, from
the 16' to the 21', Lugano inflicted a partial 14-0 to their opponents and
the score changed from 19-20 to 19-34. Just after the half-time, the Islanders
came back with an avalanche of three-points shoots. One more time,
Koller-Mrazek-Darconza speeded up the pace (35': 50-64). Lugano is now on the
top of the group K

Despite of 34 pts by Harold Mrazek, Lugano is defeated!
BC Lugano, Swiss leader at this time of Swiss
first division, did battle against Nancy, for a summit duel of th group K. If
Lugano played without his American player Derell Washington, still injured, the
Frenchies have recovered Pat Durham, absent for many weeks because of
back's problems. The first place of the group was at stake so... the Luganese
were angry of making amends of the first game against this team, which was
the only one lost of BC Lugano (defeated 63-65 in France).
But Nancy wouldn't give in its leader's place: 1-6 after 2', Lugano began
hazardously. The unavoidable Harold Mrazek brought his team back almost alone ,
scoring 20 pts in the first half. So Nancy understood the importance of
blocking Lugano's guard and tightened its defense up. Consequence: H.Mrazek
scored most of his points on free-throws in second-half. We can be a little
bit disappointed by Rodney Blake's performance (8pts and expulsed after 32').

Lugano did not let any chance to
Huima to win their first game!
Lugano, already qualifyied for the next round, has easily bitten
the last team of the group K. They had already crushed them in Finland (67-94),
and now, thanks to a fighting Harold Mrazek, who has done a great job in defense
a delivered a huge number of assists, Lugano began the game in a good way (12-6
after 5'), then 26-14 after 12'. Huima came back at 8 pts after 16', but Norbert
Valis' skill (4/5 at 2pts , 2/3 at 3pts), Michael Polite (8/13) and Mrazek (5/7
at 3pts) allowed Lugano to enlarge the gap. Lugano will play against Wloclawek
in the next round. Note that international player Harold Mrazek has become
the father of a cute little girl, last week.
