All stats
China led by one with four minutes left in the third quarter. But with both Yao Ming and Batere in foul trouble, the team faded and lost to the United States 84-65. Yao Ming was held to 10 points before fouling out late in thefourth quarter, but Batere scored 19. Batere, who played 23 games with the Denver Nuggets last year, showed the value of NBA experience in competing at this level. Too bad China did not allow Wang Zhizhi to show what he had learned playing against US competition this summer. Perhaps China would not have faded as badly. Its big men certainly would have had more fouls to give.

The game for the first place in a group. As many experts predicted, here we can have a sure candiadte to the medal position - Argentina. So far Argentinean team did not disappoint in any of their games, whowing very tough game. Very ambitious New Zealand team this time had to give up to much stronger Argentina.
Ginobili No Match For Kiwis - Argentina 112 Burger King Tall Blacks 85
Much has been made of the changing face of basketball, particularly that of the world’s premier competition - the NBA. You only have to look as far as New Zealand’s own Sean Marks to see it first hand.
Well, the Burger King Tall Blacks got an up close look at and a lesson from yet another emerging star from the international landscape – Emanuel Ginobili.
Poised to enter the NBA this year with the San Antonio Spurs, the Argentinian shooting guard showed exactly why he is so highly regarded, destroying New Zealand with a devastating performance in the final quarter of a 112-85 blowout at Indianapolis’ RCA Dome.
The Tall Blacks trailed by just two points heading into fourth period and seemed set for another of those come-from-behind wins that have become their trademark over the past two years. But Ginobili, who had battled foul trouble all night, scored nine points in an 11-0 run that killed their revival stone dead.
"His offensive outburst in the fourth quarter certainly caught us by surprise," said New Zealand coach Tab Baldwin. "What a great player he is.
"He just made great play after great play after great play."
Ginobili entered the game averaging 20 points on 57% FG shooting and began it exactly the way he ended it, scoring his team’s first seven points and nine of their first 11 before taking a spell on the bench. But his contribution to the first half was severely limited by the referee’s whistle.
After returning for the start of the second quarter, he quickly picked up his third personal foul and was forced back to his seat.
The Tall Blacks had started well with most of their three-point shooter finding their touch immediately. Mark Dickel, Phill Jones, Pero Cameron (twice) and Ed Book all hit from long range, the Kiwis contained the much-vaunted Argentine fastbreak and eased out to a 31-26 advantage after the first period.
But they fell back into their bad habit of conceding the initiative in the second quarter. Almost as soon as Ginobili was taken out of the equation, his teammates put on a 15-3 run, feeding off Tall Black turnovers.
Forward Fabric Oberto proved particularly annoying, scoring 10 points around the basket during the quarter.
Turning 44-52 down, the Kiwis had again conceded too many points and lost their way offensively. They had gone 0/5 from beyond the arc for the period, Kirk Penney (averaging 19.5 points) had not gotten into his groove at all and inside threat Sean Marks (well guarded by former Seattle Supersonics team-mate Ruben Wolkowysky) had not scored in the second quarter.
In other words, this game was still winnable with a few adjustments, primarily on defence.
The game developed into a real dogfight, as physical as any rugby match between these two old oval-ball rivals. Book was felled twice during the match, the second incident sparking a scuffle between his assailant and Dillon Boucher.
Then Marks hit the deck with a finger to his eye.
Through the melee, the Tall Blacks clawed back into contention as Penney got rolling and Cameron produced another strong performance. After trailing by 11 at 50-61, they went on a 13-2 tear to draw even and were right there still at 72-74 with 10 minutes remaining.
Then Ginobili struck again.
As the Kiwis fought to find any kind of answer offensively or defensively, players began falling like ninepins. Each team had three players foul out with Boucher, Cameron and Paul Henare the New Zealand casualties.
Ginobili finally left with 24 points and five assists in just 19 minutes, while Andres Noccioni was the other major contributor for Argentina with 17 points.
Cameron has become more of a force in the paint as this tour has progressed, his 21 points including 7/10 FT. Jones and Penney both had 13 points, but combined for an uncustomary 2/9 from beyond the arc.
Dickel showed his increased confidence from long range with three treys in his 12 points, along with five assists.
Afterwards, no one regarded the final 27-point margin as a true indication of the match.
"We got a taste of something tonight that didn’t taste very good," said Baldwin. "We came here expecting we’d get a lot more of this.
"Argentina are a good team and they played an exceptional game. For three quarters, we played pretty well too.
"There are no heads hanging in our locker room and we’ll learn from that game. We know we didn’t get the job done tonight, but there’s certainly no concern that the bubble has burst.
"We’ve just got some more work to do on this little adventure we’re on."
