July
15, 2001 - After nine editions (this year the tenth edition had to
be celebrated), theFIBA and the NBA have decided to eliminate the Mc
Donalds Open, the championship where the best teams of basket FIBA and
from 1995 the champion of NBA met every two years. Both organizers have
informed that the reason for the cancellation has been the removement of the
economic support of Mc Donalds, the multinational that sponsored the
championship.
April 2001 - After the official disappearing
of the McDonalds Championship, FIBA and Consubasquet are yet projecting
a new version of the tournment, named "World Championship for
Clubs", with participation of NBA champions, and at least one team per continent.
The first edition of it could be held in Germany, in next October, but some
more news will be released after the FIBA Central Board Reunion, scheduled
for April 27, at Geneve, Switzerland.
The
2000 Mc Donald's Championship will not be held, due to Olympic Games. But the
battle is yet on between European towns to host the McD's 2001. First rumors
tell about a strong Portuguese candidature (Porto ? Lisboa ?), but the are yet
the ones of Amsterdam (Holland)
and of a Polish group too.
