In the end of the regular season Gamma celebrated 78:77 victory. This time the game remained tough as well from the beginning until the end. In another semifinal Asem will face Orhei. Even though the games are seen by 100-200 spectators the level of the basketball is coming up. it is expected an increased number of fans when the teams will make up a Final. |

by Eurobasket News - Jan 9, 2008 | |  | The last round in Moldova League brought the derby between UASM and Gamma that gave 69:72 for the team from Kagula. ASEM overcame Soroca-Baschet 93:87 as Nartov nailed 44 points.
Andrei Lebedev (189-G-79) top-scored for Cherkassy against Banvit that extended their desperate start of the qualifying round of FIBA EuroCup in Group B. After two opening losses Banvit needed to shake things up and an opportune moment appeared in the third round as they faced winless Cherkassy in Balikesir. But curtain dropped for Turkish team as they suffered the third straight defeat in the tournament and remained at the bottom of the ladder. Banvit got to a slightly better start to the game and were up by 2 points ten minutes into the game 26:24. But Cherkassy bounced back in the second stanza as Martynas Andriukaitis and Andrei Lebedev adjusted shooting to fuel a fierce comeback effort for the visitors. Banvit struggled to maintain their opponents defensively and the margin grew to 11 points after three quarters of action. However Nigerian centre Kenny Adeleke was virtually unstoppable for Banvit and carried Banvit to a miraculous recovery in the fourth term. But it still was not enough for an overall win. Cherkassy withstood the challenge and sealed the positive outcome at the end. Andrei Lebedev led Cherkassy with 24 points. Martynas Andriukaitis tallied 23 points and 12 boards, while Edwards provided 15 points for the winners. Kenny Adeleke led all scorers with 28 points and 15 rebounds. Inanc Koc had 14 points for Banvit as they fell to 0-3 record. Cherkassy shot outstanding 56% from beyond the arc and outrebounded the hosts 32:30. Banvit will next face Dexia Mons-Hainaut in Belgium. Cherkassy will play against Ural Great away from home on January 15.
Andrei Kalnichenko (200-G-86) posted 2 points for Ukrainian Khimik against Lokomotiv Rostov. Russian team upset Knimik for the first time in the Group having 76:65 victory. Khimik still top the group at 2-1 though. Szymon Szewczyk paced the winners with 27 points and 8 rebounds. Kresimir Loncar followed him with 13 points to Lokomotiv's victory. Three players scored 14 points in the Ukrainian resistance. |

Moldova thus imroved to 2-0 record and qualified to Group D, where they will play together with hosting Wales and Scotland. The victory came due to an impressive performance in the middle of the game when Moldovian players overwhelmed their opponents to ensure necessary advantage. San Marino were ahead after the first frame 15:14 but 10 points from Denis Aculov lifted Moldova up and they posted a 39:36 lead at halftime. Aculov added another 4 points and 2 steals at the start of the third quarter to ignite Moldova to a 20:2 run that cleared them off for good. Leading comfortably 62:43 at the start of the fourth frame Moldova never allowed San Marino to perform any sort of comeback and celebrated a victory. Alexandr Popov produced 17 points and 16 rebounds, while Vladimir Iziumov added another 17 to lead Moldova. Maxim Petrenco and Denis Aculov contributed 16 points apiece for the winners. San Marino responded with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals from Teodoro Casadei. Enrico Zanotti had 13 points in a loss. Moldova outrebounded San Marino 60:37 and forced them to 30 turnovers. San marino also knocked down miserable 30.8% from free throw line. Moldova will now face Wales today. San Marino takes on Azerbaijan in Group F.

In the first game at the tournament Moldovian team easily overcame their opponents from Gibraltar 85:62. The teams kept it leveled for about starting 4 minutes before Moldova sailed away. Mihail Isac drained a trey and then added a jumper to put Moldova ahead for good. Moldova established a 20;12 advantage after the opening quarter and never gave it up. They extended the lead to 42:23 at halftime and faced little problems in the second half desite giving away the final frame. The win saw Moldova improve to 1-0 record, while Gibraltar remained on top of Group B with 1-1 record. Alexandr Popov produced 20 points and 11 rebounds for Moldova. Mihail Isac added 16 points and 6 assists for the winners. Gibraltar were paced by Sam Buxton with 26 points and 14 boards. Dylan Gomez had 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in a loss. Moldova dominated the boards 51:29. They also capitalised on Gibraltar low shooting percentage as they converted just 56.5% of free throws. Moldova at the same time committed 26 turnovers. Moldova plays against San Marino today.

Their teams lost the semifinal games and are facing each other for the third place. At least one Moldavian player will taste bronze in Ukrainian Play-offs. In the first game in Cherkasy, Monkeys beat Khimik 82:75. The score could be inappropriate, however the visitors managed to reduce in the end. The team of Andrei Kalnichenko won the last quarter 20:29 and cut to 7 points. Kalnichenko posted 3 points in the losing effort. Meanwhile Andrei Lebedev poured in 12 points for Monkeys. In the second game Lebedev ended up with 11 points for his team. He was however shadowed by Andrei Kalnichenko whose team celebrated a win in a road. Khimik won 80:88 and tied the series at 1-1. Kalnichenko finished the game with 9 points, while his team mate Lepojevic top-scored with 19. Alexandr Skutelnik (191-G-77) who has double citizenship is in the Final with Azovmash having 1-1 series over BC Kyiv. He did not play in the first game, but brought 3 points for Azovmash in the second. |

 | Cherkasy fall in the Cup despite impressive effort from Lebedev | |

They first faced Azovmash in the semis and were beaten 71:85. Andrei Lebedev scored 10 points (3/11 FG, 2/6 3pt, 2/2 FT) and made an assist in 30 minutes as a starter. In the Bronze medal game Cherkasy were rallied over by Khimik 69:86 despite an impressive Lebedev's performance. He nailed game-high 23 points (6/12 FG, 4/5 3pt, 7/8 FT), grabbed 2 boards in 35 minutes of action. Cherkasy now prepare for national championship semifinal battle against Azovmash. The first game will be played on May 3. Andrei Grigorov (192-F-88) appeared for just a minute on the court as his Neuchatel fell short to Massagno in the first semifinal encounter 64:81. In the quarterfinal of the Swiss LNB Neuchatel took advantage over Reussbuhl in two games. In game 2 Andrei Grigorov scored 1 point (1/2 FT). |

They overcame Chene 93:64 in the last Round of Swiss LNB action. Neuchatel finished the season with 17-3 record and automatically qualified for league's quarterfinal. They face Reussbuhl at this stage of the tournament. Andrei Lebedev (189-G-79) did not showed his best form as Cherkasy were sensationally beaten by BC Pulsar 75:82 in Ukrainian Superleague. Lebedev posted 3 points (1/10 FG, 1/6 3pt), made 2 rebounds and 2 steals in 29 minutes as a starter. Cherkasy ended the season at 19-5 and the 3rd spot in the standings. Cherkasy got BC Dnipro as a quarterfinal opponent. They will clash in the first game on April 16. Another Moldovian import in Ukraine Aleksei Beskov (192-G-75) nailed 2 points (1/2 FG) as Polytekhnika-Lviv were railed by BC Dnipro 82:95. Aleksei Beskov spent 10 minutes on the floor for 1 assist and 1 steal. Polytekhnika-Lviv fell to 4-20 record in the ladder. Alexei Andrus (194-G/F-79) lost the last round fixture with CSU Brasov. They were upset by CS Otopeni 54:72 to finish the season with just three victories at the bottom of the table. They will play in play-out contest to secure the Division A place. |

Beskov contributed 2 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 steal for Lviv in a win. Polytekhnika improved to 4-17 record and occupy the 11th spot in the Ukrainian superleague standings. Another Moldovian import in Ukraine Andrei Lebedev (189-G-79) was not able to prevent Cherkasy from falling to Azovmash 70:88. Moldovian guard produced 9 points (3/8 FG, 3/6 3pt), 4 assists, 2 steals and 1 rebound in 29 minutes. Cherkasy now fell to the 3rd place in the ladder behind local favorites BC Kiev and Azovmash. Andrei Lebedev got a usual starting spot and logged 27 minutes for Cherkasy. He managed 8 points (3/13 FG, 2/5 3pt), 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Cherkasy are still in the second spot in the ladder at 18-2. BC Kiev lead the way with the same record. Aleksei Beskov (192-G-75) played 17 minutes for Politechnika Lviv as they were beaten by the local favorites Azovmash 69:104 on the road. Moldovian guard delivered 8 points (2/5 FG, 4/4 FT), 1 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in a loss. Politechnika Lviv fell to 3-17 record and occupy the 12th spot in the standings. They will next take on BC-93 Pulsar at home for the chance to go up in the ladder. In Switzerland Andrei Grigorov (192-F-88) spent just 2 minutes on the floor for Neuchatel in Swiss LNB league. Neuchatel snatched a 69:48 win over Reussbuhl. Grigorov produced 4 points on a 2/2 shooting. Neuchatel improved to 16-3 and continue the chase of the recent leaders Vacallo Basket. Moldavian import in Finland Nicolas Dolenc (200-C-89) played his first game for Tapiolan-Honka since February 14. He logged 8 minutes in Tapiolan win over Visa Basket 86:80 in the Finnish Division I. Tapiolan climbed to 14-10 in the standings. In Romania Alexei Andrus (194-G/F-79) led his CSU Cuadriopol Brasov in scoring but was unable to prevent the loss. Andrus notched team-high 24 points (8/20 FG, 8/11 FT) and grabbed 2 rebounds as his side were thrashed by U Mobitelco 60:92 in Round 21. In the next round of the Romanian league CSU Cuadriopol Brasov took on Oradea away from home and suffered another defeat 64:86. Andrus though posted impressive stats as he nailed 11 points (3/11 FG, 1/3 3pt, 4/4 FT), grabbed 4 rebounds and dished out an assist in 34 minutes of play. In Round 23 CSU Cuadriopol Brasov fell short to GAZ Metan 75:81 at home, but the statistics were not available. |

The team first edged Lvivska Polytekhnika 104:75 to advance to National Cup Final Four. And later in the week Cherkasy upset BC Odesa 102:88 in Ukrainian superleague. Andrei Lebedev was a visible contributor in both games. He first nailed 13 points in the Cup triumph. Later in the week he netted 15 points (4/7 FG, 2/2 3pt, 5/6 FT), grabbed 5 rebounds, dished out 3 assists and made 4 steals in 32 minutes on the court against BC Odesa. This win saw Cherkasy stronhold their second spot in the ladder with 17-2 record and continue the championship race. In Switzerland Moldovian import Andrei Grigorov (192-F-88) logged 19 minutes for Neuchatel in Swiss LNB. His side took care of Martigny Basket 115:54 in Round 20. Moldovian forward sank 8 points (3/4 FG, 2/2 FT) and grabbed 5 rebounds. Neuchatel improved to 15-3 record and the second spot in the LNB standings. In USA moldovian forward Eugene Kotorobai (196-F-82) delivers impressive stats as he continues the career in Long Island University. In the last game of the season against Robert Morris Moldovian produced 22 points (5/10 FG, 5/9 3pt, 7/9 FT), 9 rebounds and 3 steals in 33 minutes as the Blackbirds suffered a 74:90 defeat. Eugene Kotorobai averaged 9.2 points and 6.4 rebounds in the season. He posted 43.4% of field goals and 38.8% of three point shots. He became the second player on the team with average 5 three point attempts per game and first in block shots (0.7 per game) and defensive rebounds (4.8 per game). The Blackbirds finished the season with 10-18 record. |

Andrei Lebedev started for Cherkasy and chipped in 7 points (3/7 FG, 1/2 3pt) and grabbed 2 rebounds in 16 minutes on the floor. Cherkasy improved to 16-2 and seat on the second spot in the ladder.
Meanwhile another Moldavian import in Ukrainian Superleague Aleksei Beskov (192-G-75) did not help his Politechnika Lviv to overcome BC Sumykhimprom 75:76. He posted 2 points (2/2 FT) and dished out 2 assists in 8 minutes off the bench. Politechnika Lviv fell to 2-16 in the season.
