Wolves outlast Raptors to end pre-season - by Eurobasket News
Rookie Jonny Flynn (6'0''-G-89, college: Syracuse) had 16 points, five assists and three rebounds to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves over the Toronto Raptors 98-90, as NBA pre-season action concluded Friday night.

The game was played in Sioux Falls, SD.

Ryan Hollins (6'11''-C-84, college: UCLA) had 14 points and five rebounds off the bench for the Timberwolves (3-5).

Chris Bosh (6'11''-F-84, college: Georgia Tech) put in a strong night with 27 points and 14 rebounds in the Raptors (2-6) losing effort.

Aleksandar Pavlovic (6'7''-F-83) put the game out of reach shortly into the fourth quarter with a three-pointer that made the game 80-68. Minnesota then held off the Raptors for the rest of the contest, despite a valiant effort in the attempted comeback.

Gomes gave the Timberwolves their first lead of the evening early in the third quarter with two free throws. Minnesota then began to pull away, going up 55-48 before Toronto stormed back to tie the game 57-57 with a Jose Calderon jump shot.

Minnesotas Wayne Ellington nailed two straight jump shots, but Jarrett Jack hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the third with the Timberwolves up 72-64.

Raps start strong

The Raptors got off to a great start, leading 20-10 halfway through the first quarter, with Bosh and Andrea Bargnani adding six points each.

Minnesota did their best to chip away at Torontos lead, with both teams exchanging successful free throws and the period ended with the Timberwolves narrowing the score to 28-25. Gomes had seven points in the first.

Free throws continued to drop early in the second quarter with Hedo Turkoglu and Bosh each draining a couple.

Minnesota fought back briefly, before the Raptors pulled away again, highlighted by a DeMar DeRozan driving layup to go ahead 38-30.

The two teams then exchanged a flurry of baskets, which helped the Timberwolves make up some ground thanks to a Corey Brewer three-pointer late in the period. The half ended with the Raptors up by only two points 46-44.

Toronto will open the season Wednesday, at home, versus the Cleveland Cavaliers, while the Timberwolves host the New Jersey Nets on the same night.

Notes: Antoine Wright made his Raptors debut Friday, after missing the first seven pre-season contests with a sore right knee. He finished with eight points Hes expected to challenge rookie DeRozan for the starting shooting guard position, the only position the Raptors dont have figured out yet Forward Amir Johnson returned to his old stomping grounds. He played in Sioux Falls a few years ago as part of the NBAs developmental league Minnesota was without two of their best players, as Kevin Love (broken left hand) and Al Jefferson (flu) missed the game. Both are key forwards for the Timberwolves.

Chase Griffin (Phoenix Hagen) Making his mark in the BBL - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber
Chase Griffin (188-G-83, college: Pepperdine) is a 26 year old 188 cm guard from Sammamish, Washington. He played college ball at Pepperdine in California from 2002 to 2007. In his senior year, he played 31 games averaging 15.7ppg, 4.4rpg, 2.0apg, 1.7spg, FGP: 43.3%, 3Pts: 37.3%, FT: 80.7%. He joined Phoenix Hagen in January 2008 and finished the season playing 14 games averaging 15.7ppg, 4.6rpg, 3.3apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 44.4%, 3FGP: 41.5%, FT: 76.1%. Last season, he helped lead Phoenix Hagen into the BBL playing 28 games and averaging 16.9ppg, 3.9rpg, 4.3apg, FGP: 56.0%, 3PT: 40.5%, FT: 78.1%. He had a short chat with eurobasket.

Phoenix Hagen started at 2-2. Were you surprised that the team started off so well?

That is an interesting question. We had an up and down pre season. We lost three players which has been difficult. However sometimes teams can come together and accomplish things through diversity.

You were the hero against Ratiopharm Ulm with two points back making three clutch free throws with a few seconds to play to carry Phoenix Hagen to a one point win. Was it more a dream or nightmare standing at the line?

It was a dream. As a player you always want to be in a position to win a game. I got the ball, took a quick dribble and took the three pointer. I drew a foul. Trice didnt really touch me as I made contact. When your on the line you have to make at least two free throws to get to overtime, but mentally you want to make all three to win the game.

You have played great averaging 18,5ppg, 3,5rpg and 2,7apg. Everybody knows who are now in the BBL and have shown that you can play at this level. Is the BBL your reward for many years of hard work as a basketball pro?

Yes for sure. I had the freedom from coach Ingo Freyer form the first day that I arrived in Hagen. I could always do what I wanted in his system form shooting to penetrating into the zone. It makes your job a lot easier when you have freedom. It is difficult when you have a coach that handcuffs you.

I havent seen a better try out player than Jonathan Kale have you?

He has been great. He was a beast against Ratiopharm Ulm scoring 26 points, getting 15 boards including six offensive rebounds. He has been playing around 36 minutes per game which isnt easy for a big guy. He came in ready to go and has contributed much.

On the weekend, you play against MBC. How important is winning the game of the new teams?

We have to beat them. We won most games last year, but somehow lost both games to them and we still have a sour taste in our mouths. The team still has Wayne Bernard and Jonnie Gibert, but other tan that the team is totally new.

MBC has scored over 90 points In the first four games. How do you stop this team?

They didnt score as much last season, but were known as a defensive team. This season, they have shown that they can score, but have kept their defense strong as well. This will be a difficult game, but with our new center, we should be even stronger.

Thnaks for the chat Chase. Good luck this season!
Thank you!

He won the Portugal league championship and was the 2009 Allstar MVP award. Seth spoke to Eurobasket before the big win In Ulm.

After the rising performances against Oldenburg, Giessen and Tuebingen, the team seems to be on a good way. What was the biggest change in the last week that got the team going?

I think we had a lot of intensity in the Oldenburg game. We fought hard against a good team and tough fans. We took that intensity into the Giessen game which transformed over into our big lead start in the Tuebingen game.

You were solid in every game scoring in double figures except for the Oldenburg game were you just missed a double double. It seems like you are like a volcano that is about to erupt in your offense.

I would hope that I can still offer the team more. It is still early in the season, but I want to build on my performance and keep progressing and help contribute to winning with the team.

I have a nickname for you with the eagle. Do

I never really had a nickname. I dont dislike the nickname eagle, and if you chosse it then eagle it is.

How is your relationship to Murat Didin. He is known as being a difficult coach. You also seem to be a guy that does not get intimidated on or off the court.

A player never wants to be intimidated. I havent seen him as hard to deal with. He is a demanding coach that wants every one to play well. A player can not always meet his demand. A player will not always perform well and coach cant be happy, but as long as both deal with the problem in a professional way then its ok.

You are a very kind person that has a good character. What was special in your upbringing that made you the person that you are today?

I come from a big family. I had four siblings. I had a strict father and he kept us all in line. We were an all American family where my mom and dad always stayed together. My parents instilled a lot of principles. I had a strong family upbringing.

You played a few years in the D-league for the Roanoke Dazzle. The D-league is known as hard travel and little pay. What could you learn from this experience that helped you as a player?

Playing in the D-league was my first job out of college. It was not a league where you earn much, but the talent level was very impressive. Guys always getting called up. The Washington wizards were active calling guys up. It was hard with the travel and sometimes we had 3 or 4 games a week. The league prepared me for the high level of play and the travel.

You are living in Germany now. What fascinates you most about Germany and where would you still like to visit in Germany?

What really fascinates me is how similar Germany is to the States. It was really not what I expected in Germany. I didnt have to adapt the lifestyle here. There are malls, restaurants and theatres here. I have been in Berlin, but would like to visit and really see the sights.

You like to play cornhole at home in Ohio. How does this game work?

Cornhole is like a back yard game. You play it with family and friends to kill some time and just hang out. The game has two wooden boards about 4 meters with a hole and you throw bean bags into the hole.

What was the most crazy shot that you ever took in a game?

In a high school game, I got the ball with 1,5 seconds and won the game.

What was the last DVD that you saw?

District 9

Thanks Seth for the chat. Good luck this season!

Thank you Miles

A1: Premiere Day - by Chris Mammides
The most competitive league in the world (second to the NBA Competition), the A1 Hellenic basketball league started tonight with five games. In ths premiere night, the teams gave their best shot and there was at least one surprising result and four more or less normal outcomes. The results were as follows:
Costa Cafe Marousi - Kavala/Panorama 81-61
Aris Thessalonikis- Olympiakos S.F.P. Pireus 78-85
VAP Kolossos - Ilysiakos Athens 75-68
AEK Athens - AS Trikalla 2000 86-94
Panellinios Athens - PAOK Marfin Thessaloniki 83-60

The games with more analysis were as follows:

Marousi - Kavala/Panorama 81-61
The team of Coach Giorgos Bartzokas after the great game against CSKA and the unlucky result at the end (defeat 65-66) in Eurolegue's premiere day, and with the same passion and with the European sourness but urge from the specific game, succeeded an amazing victory over Coach Kostas Pilafidis team with 20 points difference by playing simple but essential basketball. The roockie of the Hellenic NT, Kostas Kaimakoglou (206-C/F-83) was the top performer and MVP of the game with his 17 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals in less tha 20 minutes, helped his team to achieve this win. Froma close distance were Peleakos and Dimitrios Mavroeidis (208-C-85) with 16 and 10 points respectively, while from Kavala which showed many weaknesses in the game, the American Shields was the top scorer with 17 but he was all alone..

Aris - Olympiakos 78-85
A fight between the newcomer American Aaron Miles (186-G-83, college: Kansas) (27 points) and the Lithuanian Kleiza (24 points) found the visiting site of Coach Panagiotis Yannakis to the winning site as the red team had more solutions and assistance from players such us Childress (17 points), Beverly (11 points), Vujcic (10 points). Coach Katsikaris needs to change many things to the Thessaloniki team as the weaknesses were quite obvious.

Kolossos - Ilysiakos 75-68
Lans Harris (196-G-84, college: Kansas St.) continued his last years good performances and with his 21 points and 5 rebounds helped caoch Sferopoulso team to win this premiere game against the competitive team of Coach Koufos. Kolossos saw anotehr two players playing very good in this first day of the league, Dozier scored 14 points and Tsamis 12 points. From Ilysiakos top scorer was Brian Butch (211-F/C-84, college: Wisconsin) with 16 points while Kummings and Karidas scored 11 and 12 respectively.

AEK - Trikala 2000 86-94

The 100% Greek team of Coach Kostas Flevarakis couldn't resist more than 14 minutes against the Americans of Coach Agelou. Periklis Dorkofikis (19 points), Avra Kallinikidis (19 points), Stavros Toutziarakis (18 points) and Prodromos Nikolaidis (16 points) gave tehir best shot but it wasn't enough against A.J. Abrams (180-G-86, college: Texas) (25 points), Kasib Powel (19 points) and Apostolidis (13 points).

Panellinios - PAOK 83 - 60
Coach Soulis Markopoulos team was the negative surprise in this premiere day of the league as only Tapoutos and Drobnjak were able to play some decent basketball the rest of the team were not in the court, with no beggining and no end. Coach Elias Zouros team was more than a team in the court and with the help of its amazing trio, Haralambidis (16 points), Blakney (16 points) and Ian Vougioukas (212-C/F-85, college: St.Louis) (16 points) thrashed the fragile team of PAOK, with 23 points difference

  JORDAN

Idais:all smiles after great Jordan moment - by Murad Masri
Fiba published on its official site and on the official world cup 2010 site interview With Jordan star Ayman Idais, and here is the full interview which you can also check it on this link (http://turkey2010.fiba.com/pages/eng/fe/10/fwc/men/v2/news/p/eid/4728/nid/34628/sid/4728/interview.html)

----------------

Ayman Idais was the happiest of players back on August 16 when he and his Jordan teammates defeated Lebanon for the second time at the FIBA Asia Championship.

The 80-66 triumph not only clinched a bronze medal for Jordan, but also sealed for them a place in the 2010 FIBA World Championship in Turkey.

Idais, a 31-year-old power forward, had a very big hand in the success,He averaged almost 11 points and 4.3 rebounds per contest in Tianjing,
At 6ft 10in, he was virtually unstoppable when he got into a shooting rhythm.
That's what Lebanon discovered in the bronze-medal game because Idais connected on six of eight shots from long range and finished with 20 points.
Idais was so thrilled and relieved that Jordan had won that he hugged everyone he could find, including reporters who asked him about the game.

Ayman, talk about how things fell into place for Jordan at the FIBA Asia Championship.

Ayman Idais: We had been practicing hard and it just came together. We've practiced with coach (Mario) Palma and have been with him for three years. We came here to get it done, and finally we got it done.

Did you think you would claim a top three spot and make it to Turkey?

Ayman Idais: No, I did not expect it, to qualify for the FIBA World Championship, but the dream came true.

Playing at a FIBA Asia Championship is one thing but going to a FIBA World Championship is something else. What do you think about that?

Ayman Idais: We will have to work twice as hard for the World Championship as we did for the Asia Championship. We have a lot of work to do now because we will be taking on the world.

What is the biggest challenge for your team before next year?

Ayman Idais: Biggest challenge? We sometimes lose our concentration when we get up by double-digit points, allowing other teams to come back. That is something that we have to work at and hopefully when we get a lead, we will be able to keep it.

What do you have to say to the people in Jordan about the bronze medal and qualification for the FIBA World Championship?

Ayman Idais: We dedicate the bronze medal to the King of Jordan, and to all of the people who watched us and supported us.

Ty Lawson scores 29 points to help Nuggets beat Lakers 119-105 in preseason finale - by Eurobasket News
Rookie Ty Lawson (5'11''-G-87, college: N.Carolina) had 29 points, six assists and five steals to help the Denver Nuggets beat the Los Angeles Lakers 119-105 on Friday night in the exhibition finale for both teams.

The Nuggets (4-4) played without Carmelo Anthony (6'8''-F-84, college: Syracuse) and Chauncey Billups after coach George Karl gave them the night off, while the Lakers (6-2) were without 7-footers Pau Gasol (strained right hamstring) and Andrew Bynum (strained right shoulder).

Kobe Bryant (6'6''-G-78) played only 9:51, all in the first quarter, and scored six points for the Lakers, while Sasha Vujacic (6'7''-G-84) had 18 points.

The game was punctuated by eight technical fouls and two flagrant fouls from the replacement officials. The Lakers' Lamar Odom and Denver's Chris Andersen had to be separated after a rebound battle led to a pushing and shoving match in the second quarter.

On Friday night, the NBA's regular referees agreed on a two-year contract to end the lockout.

Five technicals and both flagrant fouls were called in the second quarter, which ended with the Nuggets leading 57-49.

J.R. Smith of the Nuggets had 16 of his 18 points and Kenyon Martin all 12 of his in the first half. Smith had seven assists in a game-high 40 minutes.

Lawson, a 5-foot-11 guard from 2009 NCAA champion North Carolina, scored 16 points in the fourth quarter when the Nuggets pulled out to a 107-86 lead with 5:05 remaining. He was 8 of 12 from the field and 13 of 16 from the free-throw line.

Andersen added 15 points and nine rebounds and Arron Afflalo had 12 points for the Nuggets.

Denver shot 57 percent from the field (45 of 79) while the Lakers hit 45.6 percent (36 of 79).

The club also exercised their third-year options on guard Russell Westbrook (6'3''-G-88, college: UCLA) and forward D.J. White (6'9''-F-86, college: Indiana). Both players joined the Thunder during the 2008 NBA Draft.

Also, the team waived F Mike Harris.

NBA Roster Cuts and News - by Carl Berman
The NBA deadline to trim the roster to 15 is Monday. Many are making final cuts now and prepping for opening day with their final 15. As always, some very good players will become available and teams from around the world (particularly bigger budget EuroLeague and EuroCup teams) will benefit.

Here is the latest list of cuts from the NBA:

Wednesday, Oct. 21
Atlanta waived guard Mario West, center Garret Siler and center Courtney Sims. Sims is an NBA D-League All-Star who has put up huge numbers in that league but doesnt get much more than a 10-day contract in the show. At 6'11 and 245 he should go to Europe and play quality basketball and make some good money while he still has the legs to succeed.
Detroit waived forward Maceo Baston.
Houston waived guard Romel Beck and guard Garrett Temple (LSU). Temple had a nice summer league for an undrafted free-agent and can play a couple positions. Hell have a good shot to gain valuable experience in Europe. Beck has had a tumultuous summer with the Mexican National Team and has not stuck with an NBA team lately despite several chances. He has played in Mexico, Italy, and Croatia.
L.A. Lakers waived guard Thomas Kelati.
Minnesota waived center Jared Reiner.
Philadelphia waived forward Brandon Bowman and guard Dionte Christmas (Temple). Christmas is a terrific 6'5 shooter who is not athletic enough to play in the NBA. He could be very good in Europe and make much better money than if he chose to stay in the NBA D-League.
Phoenix waived guard Dan Dickau (Gonzaga) and forward Carlos Powell. The well-travelled Zag guard Dickau has played successfully in Italy and recently for Brose Baskets in Germany. Hell have no trouble finding a home should he choose to return to Europe. Then again, hes been with seven NBA squads, why not go for eight?
Sacramento waived center/forward Melvin Ely and guard Lanny Smith.
Oklahoma City waived guard Tre Kelley.
Utah waived forward/center Goran Suton (Michigan State), forward Spencer Nelson and forward Alexander Johnson. Suton was born in Bosnia and would obviously be a hot commodity to any Euroleague team as hed qualify as a Bosman player, not an American.

Tuesday, Oct. 20
Atlanta released guard Mike Wilks and guard Juan Dixon (Maryland). Dixon is an 8 year veteran in the NBA and if not picked up by another team he could garner good wages in the Euroleague. (Note to Juan: Take your game and your lovely wife to Spain! Sign for a cool million euros with Real Madrid or Regal Barcelona and youll be living La Vida Loca!).

Monday, Oct. 19
L.A. Clippers waived guard Jerel McNeal (Marquette) and guard Anthony Roberson (Florida) who has spent time with the NY Knicks, Chicago Bulls and in Israel recently.
Minnesota waived guard Devin Green (former LA Laker) and guard Mustafa Shakur (Arizona). Shakur has played on good teams in Europe, notably Prokom in Poland, Tau Ceramica (now Caja Laboral) in Spains ACB & the Euroleague and recently in Greece. Green has been in Italy, Germany, and most recently Belgium along with multiple stints in the NBA Summer League. Green reported to Las Vegas on July 9, 2009 to participate in the 2009 NBA Summer League as a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Greens summer was the subject of a documentary titled Devin Green: The Journey. The first four episodes are currently available on YouTube and at Greens Website.

One other move to announce:

Minnesota acquired Australian Power Forward Nathan Jawai (6'10''-C-86, college: Midland CC), (6'10 280 lbs.) and cash from Dallas for a conditional second-round draft pick in 2012. Jawai has struggled to make a big impact as of yet but is still quite young and has very good size and strength. After some success in the Aussie National Team program he is looked upon to show improvement at the NBA level very soon.

Red Storm redshirt senior Anthony Mason Jr. will have to sit aside few more weeks - by Rangi Gescheit
Red Storm redshirt senior Anthony Mason (6'7''-F-87) will have to sit aside few more weeks
highly-anticipated return of the 2008-09 medical red Shirt Mason Jr. return to court for the 2009-10 season will be delayed. SJU announced that the Mason Jr. will miss the next four to six weeks while recovering from a hamstring injury re-aggravated during team practice.
After re-aggravating the hamstring over the weekend, orthopedist Answorth Allen, M.D., team doctor to the Red Storm and the New York Knicks of the NBA, re-examined Mason Jr. and recommended four to six more weeks of rehabilitation and strengthening exercises.
Last season (2008-09) , after scoring a 24-point effort against Cornell (Nov. 17) and netted 12 points against Boston College (Nov. 18), shooting 44.4 percent from the field across the two contests as part of the NIT Season Tip-Off. It was announced on Nov. 21st that he would be forced to miss the rest of the season when a MRI revealed a torn peroneal tendon in his right foot, suffered during the B.C. game, which forced him to go under corrective surgery on Dec. 15, 2008. After months of rest, recuperation, physical therapy and strength and conditioning work, Mason Jr. was cleared to return to the court for offseason voluntary workouts in early June, before suffering the original hamstring injury in early September.

An All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention selection and a first team All-Met honoree by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers' Association (MBWA) as a junior in 2007-08, Mason Jr. averaged a team-best 14.0 points per game that season and scored at a 14.0 ppg clip across three contests before his injury three games into last year's campaign. He is currently ranked sixth among St. John's all-time 3-point shooters with 109 across his 80-game career, which includes making seven shots from long-distance against Louisville on Jan. 26, 2008, to cap back-to-back 29-point games.
