Muharraq take down Manama - by Yousef Ahmed

MUHARRAQ scored a heart-stopping 88-84 overtime victory over Manama last night to remain unbeaten after three games in the Zain Bahrain Basketball League.

Former National Basketball Association veteran Lamond Murray (201-F-73, agency: Prossin Sports Management, college: California) and Bahraini talents Ebrahim Khabaaz and Mohammed Hassan each made key baskets down the stretch to lift Muharraq to the hard-earned win against their bitter rivals.

It was their first meeting of the season, as both teams aim to regain the league title and dethrone defending champions Al Ahli.

Muharraq, coached by US national Patrick Stewart, are now tied with Ahli atop the league standings with identical 3-0 win-loss records. Manama, meanwhile, suffered their first loss and are 3-1.

Murray led all scorers with 27 points, while Khabaaz chipped in with 13 and Hassan and Mohammed Abdulmajeed 12 markers apiece. Ali Abbas added seven points off the bench.

Manama import Calvin Warner scored 22 to pace his team in defeat. Mahmood Ghuloom had 21, Hassan Nairooz 18 including four three-pointers, and Ahmed Abdulaziz 12.

After a tense see-saw battle late in the fourth quarter, Abdulmajeed made a driving lay-up with two seconds remaining to tie the proceedings at 77-apiece and send the game into overtime.

Murray then kick started the added period with a fine spin move in the post against fellow American Warner, before Abdulaziz sank a triple to give Manama an 80-79 edge on the next possession. That would be their last lead of the game, however.

Khabaaz answered with a cold-blooded three-pointer to put Muharraq back up by two, 82-80, and after Ghuloom split his foul shots, Murray buried his only triple of the game from the left wing to make it 85-81 with just over a minute remaining.

Hassan had a lucky break on Muharraq's next play. He lost the ball after a deflection but regained possession right under the basket for an easy, uncontested lay-up.

Warner was then on the receiving end of an alley-oop from Abdulaziz to get back to within 83-87, but it was too little too late as a free-throw each from Nairooz and Abdulmajeed would peg the final score.

Both teams could have closed out the win in regulation, but neither could put their opponent away in an exciting fourth-quarter duel.

Nairooz had a golden opportunity to put Manama up by three with only 10 seconds left, but he made just one of two charities for a 77-75 edge, allowing Abdulmajeed his game-tying lay-up to send it into overtime.

Prior to his crucial miss from the stripe, Nairooz scored eight straight points, including two three-pointers. The first tied the game at 73-all, while the second put them up 76-73 with only 40 seconds to go.

Abdulmajeed kept Muharraq alive with two free-throws on the next possession, 75-76, which was followed by Nairooz's critical split from the foul line and Abdulmajeed's back-breaking lay-up.

League action continues tonight with Al Hala facing Bahrain Club at 6pm, followed by Al Ahli taking on Isa Town at 7.45pm.

Manama take on Muharraq - by Yousef Ahmed

MANAMA take on Muharraq tonight in what promises to be a tightly contested affair in the Zain Bahrain Basketball League. The game, scheduled to tip off at 7.30pm, will be played at the Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.

Both clubs head into the clash having won all their games so far. Manama have played and won three contests, most recently an 86-83 squeaker against Al Hala. The reigning Bahrain Basketball Association Cup holders will be relying on their American import Calvin Warner and their talented Bahraini quartet of Mahmood Ghuloom, Bader Malabes, Ahmed Abdulaziz and Hassan Nairouz.

Muharraq, on the other hand, have played just twice and won both in convincing fashion. They beat Nuwaidrat 106-90 in their last game.

The 2007-08 league champions will be spearheaded by former National Basketball Association veteran Lamond Murray (201-F-73, agency: Prossin Sports Management, college: California) from the US, and their local stars including Mohammed Hassan, Mohammed Abdulmajeed and Ali Abbas, and Ebrahim Khabaaz

He played at Central Missouri State and is a division two All American with a winning mentality, who can score the ball from the three point line or around the hole on drives. Michael spoke to eurobasket prior to the game against The EWE Baskets Oldenburg.

Congrats on the 5-0 start. Braunschweig is the only unbeaten team in the BBL but your in fifth place. How strange is that? What do you say to the BBL standings format?

Standings are standings and they are what they are we dont care about that all we care about is winning and focusing on the next game and whatever happens from then happens, but we are happy with our start.

What are the main reasons for this quick 5-0 start despite John Allen being injured?

We are good as a team and play very well as a team its not just one or two people you can stop or or team we are all contributing to the team and coming together better and better every week .

How important has coach Sebastian Machowski been for success. What has he done to get the team off on such a good way?

He is a very good coach and and he is finding a way to get all players involved and on same page on what we are trying to accomplish.

How is the feeling in the city? Do you realize as an American that the people of the city are noticing that the team is doing well?

The feeling in the city is great right now because this team has not been good over the years so they are happy. We are winning right now and we just have to keep this up. Yes, I notice that the fans know the team is doing well by how many people are supporting us hopefullly we can get this support the whole season.

What would you personally like to do to get more loudness in the Volkswagon arena

I would like to win and have the gym full of people that would be very exciting and I will do all can to play hard and put on good showing for our fans.

You were top scorer in 3 of first five games. The team really has 8 scoring options and a Nate Fox that showed for years that he could score is only 8th best scorer. If the game is on the line do you get the ball in Braunschweig?

We have many many options in our offense if the game is on the line and I would say who ever is open we all trust that they will make the shot .

You have been a scorer in every place that you played at in Europe. what else do you do well on court besides scoring?

Besides scoring, I bring to the game excitement and intensity and I love playing basketball and I take it very seriously.

The next game is against 2009 BBL champion and Euroleague team Oldenburg. How much fire is burning inside you to play them?

We know that they are a very good team and we have to go to their place and it will be difficult so it will be a great match to watch.

You guys have as a team stronger stats than Oldenburg. What will be the key to stopping them?

That is not really a key to stopping them we know they will play well we have to just execute our plays and play good defense and the rest will take care of itself.

Ricky Paulding has had a very slow start in the BBL. How does a Michael Hicks (193-G-83, agency: Limelight Hoops, college: Cent.Missouri) stop Ricky Paulding?

Ive never seen him play, but I know he is a good player so I will just play my game.

What was the last DVD that you saw?

It was Last house on the left and it was a good movie.

Thanks for the chat Michael.

Thank you.

Lucky Shiraz a.s Pipe is Weaker than Last Season... - by Mohammad Ahmadi
Shiraz a.s Pipe was a new team in superleague last season. They shocked everybody with their young players and good coaches by analysing all teams well and great attempts of their players and did great for their first season in superleague. None of iran best teams could win a.s easily and nobody could say a.s win or lose a game against big teams like Mahram, Saba or even ZobAhan,
BUT
This season, they invested more money to be in top4 but made some mistakes like coaching mistakes and missing Kevin Sheppard and Mohammad Ahmadi and now they dont have a great player like Kevin to get the Win for them and they dont have their analysis coach to analyse apponents for players to know how they play and how a.s must play.
anyway, this season they signed again Zoran Majkic which is doing weaker than last season and by suggestion of coach, they signed other players and now they just have two wins against Gorgan and Tozin Electric and it was their luck to play against Gorgan in 1st week but Gorgan had started their practices too late and were not ready for game at that weak and Tozin Electric that 2 of their best Players like Farid Zarghi and Houman Rezaei couldnt play that day. Also a.s Pipe lost against ZobAhan and Petrochimi and Azad University by arouond 20pts in each game, the games that a.s had played really better in last season. Specially against Azad University which a.s have won them last season.
The manager and head coach of a.s Pipe must know what they had last season and what they dont have now... The biggest thing that they dont have is the Courage of their Local Players that could help head coach in this season but he doesnt use them and only focuses on their Starting Five which None of them is Local...

GNAC Preview- Seattle Pacific Favored - by Sanjey Noriega
From: gnacsports.com

Seattle Pacific has won or shared three Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball titles, but still the Falcons enter the 2009-10 season in unfamiliar territory.
As the favorite.

For the first time in the history of the GNAC Coaches pre-season poll, SPU has been selected to win the conference title. However, not by a big margin

The Falcons, under first-year coach Ryan Looney, edged defending champion W.Washington by four points in the balloting. SPU and WWU, which also is a three-time conference champion, each received four first-place votes.

The Falcons, however, also received five second-place votes to outpoint W.Washington 76-72 in the balloting.

Central Washington received the lone remaining first-place vote and finished third in the balloting with 59 points. Alaska Anchorage, which won the title two years ago posting a GNAC record 16 conference victories, edged Montana State Billings 53-52 for fourth place.

Northwest Nazarene, Alaska Fairbanks, Saint Martin's and W.Oregon ended up sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively, in the balloting.

The No. 1 ranking is a bit of a surprise to Looney, but at the same time was somewhat expected.

Over the entire summer out on the road recruiting, the coaches in the conference told me that they were probably going to pick us No. 1, Looney said.

That is an interesting situation for anyone in their first year as a head coach. Normally, regardless of who the coach is, you wouldn't expect a team with a new coach to be ranked No. 1.

That's a credit to the players that we have returning in our program. If our staff has done one thing right during the transition, it was to hurry up and get here and to make sure all of the guys are back on board.

That is certainly one mission that was accomplished as SPU returns 12 letter winners from a year ago. The only missing piece is Casey Reed, who graduated and is now an assistant coach at Alaska Anchorage.

All the numbers support SPU's No. 1 ranking. Its 12 letter winners far surpass anyone else (W.Washington ranks second with nine and only one other team has more than six).

The Falcons are one of only two teams with four returning starters the conference wide average is 2.33 and they have a conference-best three returning all-stars including second team pick Chris Banchero (6'1''-G), who finished 11 th in scoring with a 15.7 average.

The rest of the league combined has only five returning all-stars.

Banchero is one of seven players back that ranked in the Top 15 in scoring SPU's Brandon Larrieu (6'0''-G) finished 14 th and the Falcons' Rafael Moreira (6'9''-C-86, college: E.Utah JC) is one of six back from last year's Top 10 rebounding list earning a No. 8 rank.

Both Larrieu and Moreira earned honorable mention honors a year ago.

W.Washington guard Morris Anderson (6'3''-G) is the lone returning first team all-star. Four others forward Kendall Gielow and center Brian Barkdoll, both of Northwest Nazarene; Saint Martin's forward Blake Poole and Alaska Fairbanks guard Emmanuel Jenkins (6'0''-G) were all honorable mention picks.

Poole and Anderson are the lone returning 2008-09 GNAC statistical champions. Poole led the league in rebounding, averaging 10.6 per game, and Anderson, who ranked second in assists, won the steal title netting 2.7 per contest.

The top returning scorer from a year ago is Jenkins, who ranked third averaging 18.7 per game just ahead of teammate Jon Moe (6'2''-G), who finished fifth at 18.6.

W.Washington officially tips off the 2009-10 season this Friday the 25 th campaign for head coach Brad Jackson playing Grand Canyon in the opening round of the West Coast Disney Classic at Anaheim.

The Vikings also play long-time power Kentucky Wesleyan on Saturday and San Francisco State on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Northwest Nazarene and Saint Martin's debut with road exhibition games against Division I schools. The Crusaders play Friday at Utah State, while the Saints debut Sunday afternoon at Eastern Washington.

Seattle Pacific Debuts With Victory; Saints Lose At Idaho - by Sanjey Noriega
From: gnacsports.com

Chris Banchero (6'1''-G) and Brandon Larrieu (6'0''-G) scored 13 points apiece leading Seattle Pacific to an 82-59 exhibition rout of future GNAC member Simon Fraser University Friday night at Brougham Pavilion.

In another exhibition game, the Idaho led from start-to-finish in a 87-61 win over Saint Martin's at Memorial Gym in Moscow.

Banchero hit three of five field goals and seven of eight free throws, while Larrieu drained four of seven shots including a pair of treys in Seattle Pacific's win. Post Rafael Moreira added 10 points.

Chas Kok led Simon Fraser University with 14 points, and Matt Kuzminski (6'4''-G) scored 12 for the Clansmen.

Seattle Pacific jumped to a 9-0 lead, opening the game with a 10-footer by Banchero, back-to-back buckets by Larrieu (including a three-pointer) and a put back by Moreira.

Simon Fraser University used a 7-0 spurt to cut SPU's 14-2 lead to 14-9 at the midpoint of the half. The Clan was within six at 19-13 when the Falcons strung together nine straight points, essentially taking command for good.

SPU limited the Clan to 19 first-half points, while scoring 42 on the offensive end.

For our first time out together, especially in the first half, we did a good job defensively. We also made some progress offensively, first-year SPU coach Ryan Looney said.

The biggest issue right now is we don't have the proper practice habits. We struggle to maintain our intensity for an entire two hours. That carried over into the second half of tonight's game.

Every day we seem to have a little bit of a lull and tonight ours was right at the beginning of the second half on defense.

Simon Fraser University got as close as 14 early in the second half at 51-37. Seattle Pacific responded with a 13-2 run, started on two consecutive treys by wing Jeff Downs and didn't allow SFU closer than 17 the rest of the way.

Steffan Johnson (6'1''-G-85) scored 14 points and Mac Hopson, Marvin Jefferson and Shawn Henderson all had a dozen in Idaho's victory over Saint Martin's. The Vandals jumped to a 17-2 lead and maintained at least a double-digit margin the rest of the way.

Blake Poole (6'5''-F) had a 15-point, 15-rebound double-double and Jared Howard had 11 points for the Saints. Poole recorded more than half of SMU's rebounds as the Saints were outboarded 37-29. Saint Martin's also had eight more turnovers (20-12).
