Penarol step away from Liga Americas title - by Eurobasket News
Penarol - Quimsa 87:58
Penarol made another step towards Liga Americas crown. They coasted past Quimsa for the second straight win at the Final Four stage of the tournament. Pablo Sebastian Rodriguez (188-G-78) and Kyle Lamonte (191-G-84, agency: KMG Sports Management, college: William Carey) scored 19 points apiece to lead the charge. Penarol will face the Mexican powerhouse Halcones Xalapa later tonight for the trophy.
Penarol simply overwhelmed their opponents in this one. They led from start to finish. Penarol earned a 19:5 lead early in the encounter. Quimsa capped the term with five points in a row to sooth the pain. But Penarol just mounted the pressure as they ensured a 44:25 advantage at the interval. Penarol easily kept their counterparts at bay throughout the third stanza. The scoreboard read 69:39 with ten minutes to go. Quimsa could not recover in the final term and had to surrender at the end. Leonardo Gutierrez (200-F-78) finished with 11 points for the winners. Julio Mazzaro (190-G-79) was the only Quimsa player to deliver in double digits as he knocked down 18 points. Jose Muruaga (198-G-84) nailed 8 points in the loss.

Penarol: Pablo Sebastian Rodriguez 19, Kyle Lamonte 19, Leonardo Gutierrez 11
Quimsa: Julio Mazzaro 18, Jose Muruaga 8

Gunners sack Stahl - sign Asceric as new Head Coach - by Stefan Prager
The Oberwart Gunners announced that they have sacked Head Coach Peter Stahl and signed Neno Asceric in stead. After losing to the Kapfenberg Bulls in the Austrian Cup Semifinals and losing to the Gussing Knights in the league at home as well a few days ago the days of Peter Stahl in Oberwart have come to an end. It was Stahls second stint with the Gunners after coaching them pretty successfully from 2003 to 2006. The Gunners will face the Traiskirchen Lions on Monday in what will be a decisive game to advance to the so called Hauptrunde. It will be a very important game for new head coach Neno Asceric who also coaches the Austrian National Team and will do so as well in future. His coaching career in club basketball includes a stint with St. Polten in 2006/07 where he had his biggest success as a player in the nineties when he won three championships and three cup titles. He then moved on to France where he coached in ProA and ProB as well before going to Mexico for the 2008/09 season.

Three teams tied in the second spot in NBB - by Eurobasket News
Three teams are now knotted up at the second spot in the NBB standings. Flamengo, Pitagoras/Minas and Joinville are chasing the league leading Universo/BRB. These teams got simultaneous victories in Round 15 of the championship.
Pitagoras/Minas outscored Paulistano/Amil 91:84 at home court. The hosts dominated in the first three quarters taking a 15-point lead into the fourth period. Paulistano/Amil failed to recover in the final frame and had to surrender at the end. Murilo da Rosa (210-C/F-83, agency: Arik Krayn Services) fired 29 points to lead the charge. William Drudi notched 22 points in the victory. Rafael Malfi responded with game-high 31 points for Paulistano as they slipped at 4-8 record.
The reigning champions Flamengo cruised past CETAF 100:79 for the tenth victory. Flamengo built a 7-point lead at the first break and maintained well throughout the first half. Machado brothers helped Flamengo extend the margin at 14-point mark with one quarter remaining and Flamengo eased to the victory. Eduardo Machado (195-G-82) finished with 23 points, while Marcelinho Machado contributed 21 points in the winning effort. McNeil produced 18 points for CETAF.
Joinville had to sweat to overcome Londrina 83:79 on the road. Jefferson Sobral (203-F-80) accounted for 19 points to lead the visitors. The teams kept it close throughout the game but Joinville proved just a bit more accurate in the dying seconds to steal the victory. Andre Luiz Brugger added 18 points for the victors. Fernando Mineiro netted game-high 26 points for Londrina.
Universo/BRB recorded the 13th win as they held off Pinheiros/Sky 105:77 in front of the home fans. Welington dos Santos (186-G-81, agency: Interperformances) delivered 35 points for Universo/BRB. Guilherme Giovannoni had 25 points for the winners. Shamell Stallworth (196-F-80, agency: Interperformances, college: USF) delivered 17 points in defeat.

First win in four weeks for Rilski Sportist - by Valentin Anguelov
For first time in two and a half months Rilski Sportist defeated a different team than Lukoil Academic or Levski. Today in Samokov the team won against Spartak Pleven 88-72. This win moved the team to sixth place in the standings.
Rilski Sportist controlled the game from the start. The team won the first quarter 31-16 after taking the lead with a 10-0 run after 2-4 start of the game. The visitors from Pleven cut the deficit to 8 in 23rd minute but until the end of the half Rilski's lead went up to 21 points, 54-33.
So the home team practically did what it had to do in the first half and needed to close the game in second. The difference never went under 15 points and at times it was up to 25. In the end the visitors cut it to 16 at 88-72.
The best player for the hosts was once again the captain Aleksandar Gruev (187-G-83) who finished with 21 points, 7 assists and 5 rebounds, scoring 5 times from the three-point line. Simeon Naydenov added 17 points while Bogdan Boev ended with 15.
For the visitors who were left by their two best players in the last week - Hrisimir Dimitrov and Rob Preston, Iliya Stankov finished as top scorer with 15 points and Aleksandar Dyakovski added 13.

FULL STATS FROM RILSKI SPORTIST - SPARTAK PLEVEN

Levski back on top - by Valentin Anguelov
Levski is again on top of the NBL standings after downing 101-86 the previous leader Lukoil Academic. The two teams have equal records - 12 wins and 3 losses but 'The Blues' hold the first place because they have won twice in the three meetings between the teams. Just like the last game in Pravets today the players of Konstantin Papazov and Toni Dechev were superior at the defensive end and gave Jovica Arsic's first loss at the helm of Lukoil Academic.
Six players of Levski scored in double figures. Aaron Harper had 21 and added also 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Stefan Georgiev finished with 18 points and 6 boards before fouling out and his brother Zlatin scored 15 and played great defense against Riste Stefanov.
For Lukoil Academic only two players deserve to be praised. Pero Antic had 28 points and 8 rebounds while the new addition to the team Slavko Stefanovic had 26 points, including 3/3 from the three-point line.
During the first half Lukoil Academic tried to pull away but Levski never allowed that to happen. The good defense of Lukoil in the last game was nowhere to be seen and it was evidenced especially in the second half. After the break all the problems for the champions were on defense. They allowed 53 points and after Stanislav Slaveykov scored a three-pointer from the center of the court Levski passed the 100-point mark.
From the last eight games between the teams this is the fifth win for Levski and against fourth different coach. Before that game 'The Blues' defeated 'the students' coached by Lyubomir Minchev, Petko Marinov, Georgi Mladenov and now Jovica Arsic.

KORISLIIGA: Samuel Haanpaa now in Spain - by Rauno Hurmalainen
Finnish NT SG/SF Samuel Haanpaa (203-G/F-86) has left Finland today and joined Spanish LEB Gold Team Faymasa Palencia roster. Haanpaa played 30 games in Finnish Top League on Torpan Pojat (Helsinki) roster averaging 15,1 ppg, 5,4 rpg in 31,2 mpg. But when Faymasa Palencia lost ex-NBA player Michael Dickerson (197-G-75, agency: Prossin Sports Management, college: Arizona), Haanpaa was given a chance. Spanish Head Coach Nacho Lezkano has led Team Palencia to 7-14 record and that is giving placement # 16 right now. Last season Haanpaa was playing in France (Fos Quest Provence Basket, NM1), where he averaged 9,1 ppg - 3,1 rpg in 19 games. Sharpshooter Haanpaa was shooting then pretty well: 1 - 91,0%, 2 - 45,0%, 3 - 45,0%.

Chris Copeland (TBB Trier) Pregame Thoughts To BG Goettingen Game February 7th - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber
Christopher Copeland (203-F-84, agency: 540 Sports, college: Colorado) is a 25 year old 203 cm power forward from Orange, New Jersey. He went to the University of Colorado from 2002-2006. In his senior year, he played 30 games averaging 12.1ppg, 5.1rpg, 1.6apg, 1.1bpg, FGP: 44%, 3PT: 35.7%, FT: 68.8%. In his first season overseas, he played for Beirasar Rosalia (Spain-LEB Gold, starting five), only pre-season, then moved to C.B. L'Hospitalet (Spain-LEB Gold, starting five) playing 4 games averaging 4.0ppg, 8.0rpg and then moved to Matrixx Magix Nijmegen (Holland-Eredivisie, starting five) playing 28 games and averaging 18.0ppg, 7.6rpg, 2.1apg, 1.5spg, 1.0bpg, FGP: 49.7%, 3PT: 40.3%, FT: 79.3%. Last season, he moved to Germany to TBB Trier playing 34 games averaging 13.2ppg, 4.9rpg, 2.3apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 56.9%, 3PT: 35.6%, FT: 74.8%. Currently he is averaging 15,4ppg, 3,2rpg and 2,1apg. Chris Spoke to eurobasket before the game against BG Goettingen February 7th.

How tough have the last weeks been? A tough two point loss in Frankfurt and a buzzer beater loss at home against Bremerhaven. When is TBB Trier going to get lucky again?

These weeks have been very tough.I think we have been playing good basketball as of late. Just not quite good enough to pull in those wins. When will luck be on our side? I'm hoping Sunday. Let's see if it comes back then.

How tough was that buzzer beater loss against Bremerhaven? TBB Trier was dominating the game Did you think that the Andrew Drevo shot was going to go in as you saw the release?

It was disappointing. And I agree I thought we played well enough to win the game but things don't always go the way you hope. I didn't think it would fall. but you have to give him credit he made a big shot.

What did coach Yves Defragne tell the club after the game? Is there any special type of motivating that the team needs now?

Does the team need special motivation? No I don't think so.We know how good we can be and we have shown this against really good teams. The fact that we are so close to getting over the hump should be motivation enough.

You had a very solid game with 18 points and 6 rebounds. Have you found your rhythm again?

Ehhhhh no comment let's see Sunday.

The next game is against BG Goettingen. What is your memory of the 94-87 victory at home besides your 30 points? TBB Trier seemed to come to terms with the pressure defense of BG Goettingen?

I remember their defense. They are one of the more aggressive defensive units in the league... We will have to be sharp offensively.

BG Goettingen is my dark horse team to win it all. They have improved a lot since their loss at Trier. What makes this team so strong besides their style of play?

Well defense wins championships and I think they are one of the better defensive teams in the league. If they are your dark horse team to win it all. I would say their ability to defend would be a huge reason for that being possible.

TBB Trier is not a strong rebounding team, but did a great job on the boards. Will that be one of the keys to winning?

No doubt. We will have to match their defensive intensity with our own. Controlling the glass will be real important for us to win.

Dwayne Anderson is one of the hottest players in the league. Could he be your defensive assignment? How do you stop a Dwayne Anderson?

Yes he could be my assignment. And how would I stop him? We will have to see Sunday. If I did have a specific idea I definitely wouldn't announce it before the game.

There must be a lot of snow of Trier. If you could escape to a warm place for aday where would you go?

Australia.

What is your Superbowl pick?

New Orleans.

What was the last DVD that you saw?

Vampire In Brooklyn.
Thanks Chris for the chat!

Jason Bonne (BG Goettingen) Pregame Thoughts To TBB Trier Game February 7th - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber
Jason Boone (198-F/C-85, agency: Weller Sports - Entertainment, college: New York U.) is a 24 year old 198cm power forward/center from Sugar Loaf, New York. He is playing his third season with MEG Goettingen. He played at New York University (NCAA 3) from 2003-2007. In his senior year, he played 28 games averaging 14.1ppg, 9.6rpg, 2.4bpg, 2.9apg, FG: 63.0%, FT: 64.3%. Two seasons ago, he had a short stay with Bernau (Regionalliga) before making the jump up three leagues to MEG Goettingen. Last season, he averaged 4.4ppg, 4.0rpg, FG: 53.7%. This season, he is avergaing 21 minutes per game and is averaging 11,0ppg, 5,6rpg and 1,1bs. He took some time to talk to eurobasket about the upcoming game against TBB Trier on February 7th.

How was the short trip to Krasyne Krylia? How much more snow was there than in Gettingen and how cold was it?

It's a pretty draining travel schedule, we had to wait two extra hours on the plane for them to clear some ice off the runway, but the hotel was nice. There was a little bit more snow than Germany and noticeably colder. The air was pretty dry too.

How much basketball interest was there in Krylia? How was the atmosphere there in the arena and in the town?

The gym wasn't that big but it was pretty full, they had a drummer and a flag waver but I still think they'll be in for a surprise when they see how the Gottingen fans rock that Lokhalle.

After the good start in the next Eurochallenge round, does the team possibily get small small ideas of being able to win it all?

We haven't looked that far ahead, this loss in Russia definitely humbled us a bit but we still feel confident that if we play our style, we are going to continue to be successful. We'll open this conversation back up when we make the Final 8.

The next game is against TBB Trier? What are your memories of the 94-86 loss in Trier?

I remember Schuler hitting an under-handed scoop shot from the foul line at the end of the shot clock. It just seemed like one of those days where our defense wasn't strong from the start, and they were playing with that 'whatever shot we take is going to go in' confidence.

Why did BG Goettingen allow 94 points in Trier? Was the pressure defense not working as well or was it on account of other factors?

I don't think it was anything more than us not stopping their runs. We definitely got the game up and down, but we couldn't piece together more than one or two stops in the a row. We're a team that can put up a lot of points very quickly, but if we aren't playing our defense we can also give up a lot of points quickly. It was just one of those days.

In that game Chris Copeland scored 30 points. Why did BG Goettingen have so much difficulty stopping him?

He's a great player and a good guy as well, I had a chance to talk to him at All-Star Weekend. But I think he did a good job of finding the open spot on the floor and depending who closed out on him (a big man or a guard) he either drove to the hoop or shot it over them.

What is it like playing against the elder statesman George Evans? Why is he so tough for his age of 38?

Evans is the definition of a grown-up Man Child. I don't know if there is a stronger player in the league, especially if you take into account the experience. He doesn't try to do anything he can't do and I think that's why he's really effective out there, even at the age of 38.

What will be the key to winning? What will be important besides controlling the boards and keeping the pressure up?

I think it's going to be playing Team Basketball. Sometimes we get away from that but we've been most successful when we are able to get others involved and really wear our opponents down with our depth.

The snow has been driving many crazy. If you could go to a very warm place for one day where would you go?

Well I'm looking forward to our trip to Cyprus but I'll tell you, if I could be somewhere warm right now, it's be my parents living room. That's about the warmest place I can think of.

What is your Superbowl pick score and MVP?

If Freeny doesn't play then I'm liking the Saints, a high scoring game somewhere in the 38-31 ball park and I'm going to say Drew Brees will take home the MVP honors.

What was the last movie that you saw?

I watched Rocky IV to get me in the 'beat up on some Russians' mode but I skipped the part when he killed Apollo Creed.
Thanks Jason for the chat.

Zain club to passby a tough time after Barrak's resignition! - by Omar Shafaamri
(Amman, Jo-Basket.com) Zain's basketball club future will face a tough time, The main supporter of the basketball team and The chief executive officer of Kuwait's Mobile Telecommunications Co., or Zain, has resigned, raising questions about the future of the third-largest Arab telecommunications company by market value.

'Saad Al Barrak has handed in his resignation to the chairman of the board and the chairman will present the resignation to board members to look into the matter,' Zain said in a statement to Kuwait's bourse Web site, confirming a report by Dubai-based Al Arabiya television earlier Wednesday. The company didn't give a reason for his resignation. Mr. Barrak, who took the helm at the third-largest Arab telecommunications operator by market value in 2002, couldn't be reached for comment.

The resignation of Mr. Barrak, who is also Zain's deputy chairman, raises questions over the direction of the company's future strategy, particularly since a major shareholder is pushing to sell a controlling stake in the company to foreign investors.

'His resignation will have a temporary negative impact on the company because he turned Zain into a global player and he has clearly left his mark on the company,' said Naser Al Nafisi, general manager of Kuwait's Al Joman Center For Economic Consultancy.

Mr. Barrak led the company's aggressive acquisition spree, pushing for the purchase of Netherlands-based Celtel for $3.4 billion in 2005 to enter sub-Saharan Africa, as part of plans to turn Zain into a top-10 global mobile operator by 2011.

He negotiated for hefty licenses in countries such as Saudi Arabia, where Zain paid $6.1 billion to operate the third mobile company in the world's biggest oil exporter. Mr. Barrak will retain his position as chief executive officer of Zain Saudi Arabia, in which Zain holds a 25% stake, the Saudi company's chairman told Al Arabiya Wednesday.

Zain, which started as a telecom company in Kuwait in 1983, currently operates in 23 countries, serving more than 70 million customers.

Kuwait's Kharafi Group, which is leading a consortium to sell a 46% stake in the operator, said in January the sale may take more time to finalize due to the region's current economic and financial circumstances.

Badr Al Kharafi, vice-chairman of Kharafi Group, said in September a group of Indian and Malaysian investors plan to buy a 46% stake in Zain for about $13.7 billion and the deal would take about four months to conclude.

Mr. Kharafi said at the time the club of buyers included India's state-run telecom companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., or BSNL, and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd., or MTNL, and Malaysian billionaire Syed Mokhtar Al Bukhary. But Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. haven't confirmed their participation in the deal, further casting doubt about its viability.

The stake-sale talks put a hold on Zain's negotiations to sell its Africa assets, excluding Sudan and Morocco, and a strategic review the company was undertaking with consultants.

'I see the resignation as a result of the different agendas between the shareholders and the management. He wanted to continue to build and grow the company,' said Simon Simonian, a telecom analyst at Shuaa Capital. 'I think the major shareholder wanted to cash in and decided to sell Africa, but didn't get a good price. And then the major shareholder decided on his own to pursue the sale of a stake in the company,' Mr. Simonian added.

Zain posted a worse-than-expected 53% drop in third-quarter net profit due to currency fluctuations and higher financing costs.

In Kuwait, Zain competes with National Mobile Telecommunications Co., or Wataniya Telecom, which is majority owned by state-controlled Qatar Telecom, and Kuwait Telecom Co., or Viva, in which Saudi Telecom Co has a stake.
