Former Cavs general manager Danny Ferry, who is now the vice president of basketball operations for the Spurs, hand-picked Treloar to coach the BayHawks.

As for the Suns, their new general manager, Lance Blanks, was an assistant under Ferry while with the Cavaliers and worked closely with Treloar as well.

How was your summer? How does a normal Wayne Bernard (190-G-81, college: Davidson) work out day look like in the summer?

My summer was ok. When I got back to the States I took some time for myself to let my body relax for a bit. Then I began my workouts after a few weeks. Every summer I travel somewhere but this summer was pretty low-key

You are back with the MBC wolves for a third season and are captain. How excited are you about the upcoming season?

I am excited about this season, mostly because I get excited about every season when its just beginning. The process of learning to play with new teammates and coming back to a place that I'm familiar with brings both fun and comfort for me. I'm looking forward to the competition, games, and of course our wonderful fans here in Weissenfels.

How has training camp been? You had some hard workouts and then your first exhibition game against the BSW Sixers winning 70-52. How is the team coming together in the early phase?

Training camp was tough, but thats to be expected. My legs are STILL killing me from the workouts we are doing but they are good. The team is coming along great in this early part of training. Everybody is trying to adapt to each person's playing style, and encouraging as well so so far I think we are coming along good.

The team lost some key players but also added some talented players. What can we expect from the MBC Wolves in the 2010-2011 BEKO BBL season?

Yes, our roster is different this season. As far as expectations go, I expect us to come out and work hard and smart every game, to put us in a solid position in the BBL.

The secret to last seasons team was that you had a lot of players that could step up on any day which made the team very unpredictable. What will be the key to being successful this season?

I think the key to being successful this season is again the same - that any player can step up and have a good game, especially since we have a few more experienced guys on the team now.

The team brought in Americans Tim Blue and Davon Roberts. What is your early impression of these guys and what are their best qualities?

Both Tim and Davon are athletic, mobile forwards who can score both inside and out. Both of their biggest strenghts, in my opinion, is their versatility (both on the offense and defensive end).

The team also brought in Michael Jordan. Was a player like Jordan missing last season with so much experience that might of brought the team over the hump and making the playoffs?

Its hard to say what was missing last year, because there could have been any number of reasons as to why we didn't make the playoffs. But Mike definitely brings in experience to our team, and his history shows that he has experience on winning teams. His physical and athletic strengths, along with his 'Basketball I.Q.', will certainly help the team this season.

You are turning 29 soon. Are you in the prime of your career and could you have more of a scoring role this season?

I've been in the prime of my career ever since I started playing basketball as a kid. ( joke). But I honestly think that if a player is still playing basketball, he should always think he is in the prime of his career, regardless of his age/experience. Otherwise, if he thinking 'im not in my prime yet' , he may not have the confidence that he needs. If he thinks 'I'm past my prime' he also lacks confidence. The key is maintaining a willingness to learn, as well as staying confident in your abilities. Once a person's career is over, then he can look back and decide which part was his prime. As far as my scoring role, yes I want to have more of a scoring role this season. But I play this game to win games, not reach a scoring title. Both would be nice, of course. But for me, the feeling of winning a game outweighs the feeling of losing one, no matter how much I score.

How well will the Miami Heat do with Lebron James this season?

I think the Heat will not win the championship this season. They may do it another year but I just don't see it this season. But, some of my feelings could be because I just don't want to see them win it. I just naturally root for the underdogs. And, I think the Lebron interview on ESPN was ridiculous. I understand it as a business decision, and that he probably did it to increase revenue for his business empire (did he really need it?), but I do not respect that as a fan of the sport of basketball. He doesn't have any rings, and I have never seen any of the 50 greatest NBA players do something like that. But like I said, I think he made that decision purely for business.

Michael Jordan is a great player but also a good practical joker. How are you going to protect yourself from him and possibly being photographed in an embarrasing way?lol

Well, if Mike has some practical jokes, this may be a long season of everybody trying to protect themselves from embarrassment. But it is basically impossible since every phone has a camera and most of our bus trips will be long. But the good news is that there are plenty of other guys on the team who have some tricks up their sleeves or is that a bad thing? I guess we'll see. You must have forgoton to ask the 'Miles Question', which is, 'which was the last movie you've seen on DVD?' Well, I can't even remember the last movie I saw on DVD was because it was probably about 4 months ago. but the last movie I saw in the theaters was Inception, which was a good one.

Thanks Wayne for the chat! Good luck this season!

Week 1 in the LNBP - by Chris Terrell
Mexico - Week 1 in the LNBP saw some teams show some early dominance and some others struggle a little getting started but it is a long season and the teams have several weeks to really establish where they expect to be in the standings this season. Here is a wrap-up of where the teams find themselves after 2 games.

Angeles de Puebla has gotten off to a quick start evidenced by two very similar games in defeating Ola Verde 85-80 opening night and then coming back and getting the best of Tampico 84-81 in game 2. Luis Bethelmy (200-C-86) has really been the catalyst early on for Puebla collecting an impressive 22 points and 16 rebounds in the win against the Huricanes. Titanes, also 2-0 on the young season, has been impressive early on with 'Chino' Jesus Lopez (205-F-83, college: SW Baptist) 19/5, Luis Pulido (188-G-85, college: Cal Poly Pomona) 13, and Victor Avila (210-C-77, college: Oklahoma) 12/8 all having good games against Ola Verde. Each of the National players for DF are playing at a high level for Coach Roberto Zaragoza . The team has been playing with one american with Eric Martin (196-G/F-76) getting 30 in the game 1 win against Huricanes and coming back with 16 against Poza Rica. This block of games has DF at 2-0 along with Puebla while Ola Verde and Tampico both fall to 0-2.

Soles lost a heartbreaker at home in overtime to Cancun 97-100 while narrowly defeating the expansion Volcanes a couple nights later by 11, also at home. Anthony Pedroza (191-G-79, agency: Edge Sports, college: Oregon) came out hot against the Pioneros collecting 31 in their opening night loss but the early struggles of Wade and Kruger have to be concerning to Mexicali. Wade has begun the season 9-34 from the field while Kruger has come out 4-21. The Soles really struggled in the second half against Toluca and a 2-3 zone but has been aided greatly by Terrance Thomas (198-F-80, agency: Pro One Sports, college: Baylor) who got 28/13 against Volcanes after contributing 24/9 against Cancun. Look for Kruger and Wade to turn it around and for Soles to hit another gear once they start scoring on a consistent basis against zone defenses. Larry Morinia (180-G-80, agency: ProSportsCareers, college: Montana St.) had a great night for the expansion club from Toluca with 26 while Latin Big Man Antoine Broxsie (209-F-79, college: Oklahoma St.) put down 15 points, 12 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks for his second consecutive double-double. Cancun faced off with Potros and got the win 103-79 while Potros got the win against Toluca 94-63, Rafael Perez (193-G/F-82, agency: Paris Global Sports) collecting 21 while Serge Angounou (202-F-83, agency: Union Sports, college: Arizona St.) 17/14 and Hugo Carrillo (205-C/F-83) 17/16 came up big in the win. Cancun has been led by LeRoy Hickerson (196-G-82, college: Cumberlands), Gregory Grays (185-G-79, agency: Interperformances, college: Detroit Mercy), and Kevin Young (206-C-84, college: Missouri) who went for 27, 25, and 17 respectively at Obregon. Pioneros 2-0, Potros 1-1, Soles 1-1, Volcanes 0-2.

Toros have played well early getting a couple wins on the road 94-60 at Lechegueros and 80-72 at Abejas. Ike Ofoegbu (205-F-85, college: SMU) had a huge game getting 31 and 7 in Guanajuato. Fuerza Regia has also come out undefeated getting a tight 85-82 road win in Leon, Jeremis Smith (203-F-86, college: Georgia Tech) dominated with 28 points and 13 rebounds while Alejandro Carmona (194-G/F-83) had 21. Leon's Harold Arceneaux (198-F-77, college: Weber St.) had 23, Ryan Moss (200-F/C-74, college: UALR) 22 and 10, Garfield Johns (193-G-85, college: Utah) 15, and Mike Smith (201-G/F-76, college: La-Monroe) 11/7 and although Leon played significantly better against Monterrey they fell to 0-2 with the loss. Toros and Fuerza Regia 2-0, Lechegueros and Abejas 0-2.

Algodoneros gets a nice couple wins in defeating the expansion Jaguares 104-82 and Panteras 100-77. Paul Stoll (178-G-85, agency: Duran International) has been the man with 33 in the opener and coming back with 21 in game 2. Stephen Sir (195-G-82, college: N.Arizona) 23 and Blake Walker (196-G/F-82, college: Portland St.) 22 have also been helping carry the load for Torreon. Lobos Grises is also out to a quick start with a 96-79 win against Jaguares. The Lobos also got the win vs. Panteras with Mugabe Thomas (193-F-80, college: Cedarville) going for 24 while Keith Gayden (202-F-83, agency: EM-PA, college: Duquesne) 18/7 and Antonio Garcia (203-F/C-76, college: Ky Wesleyan) 9 points and 22 rebounds keeping Aguas in the game until the 4th. Lobos Grises and Algodoneros move to 2-0 while Panteras and Jaguares both fall to 0-2.

Xalapa and Veracruz played a two game set, each having a chance at the other club's home arena. The two clubs split the set in low scoring games with Veracruz getting the opener 68-64 and Xalapa coming back and winning 76-66 in the second, Carlos Rivera (187-G-83, agency: Paris Global Sports, college: Hofstra) getting 17 while Leandro Garcia Morales (186-G-80, agency: Interperformances, college: Texas A&M) had 25 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists in Xalapa. Adam Parada (213-C-81, college: Cal-Irvine) also contributing a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Xalapa 1-1, Veracruz 1-1.

Each of the clubs in the league will look to address what the perceived weaknesses might be after their opening week. We don't expect any major changes until at least another week to see what's what in the Liga Nacional. Clubs are being encouraged to contact me directly at info@beseenhoop.com for news about roster and results.

Ron Artest will sell his championship ring for a good cause - by Eurobasket News
Ron Artest (6'7''-G-79, college: St.John's) won't be showing off the NBA championship ring he won last season. In fact, the Lakers guard says, 'I'm never going to put it on.'

Instead, Artest plan to auction the ring and use the funds to put more psychologists, psychiatrists and therapists in schools.

Artest made the announcement to NBA.com yesterday while visiting a Los Angeles-area school to talk about mental health -- a topic he put on center stage when he publicly thanked his psychiatrist after winning the NBA Finals.

'You work so hard to get a ring, and now you have a chance to help more people than just yourself, instead of just satisfying yourself,' Artest said. 'What's better than that? For me, this is very important.'

SBL draft afterthought - by Chris Wang
You can see a little bit of everything that went wrong in Taiwanese basketball in the annual SBL Draft, which took place Sept. 1 in Taipei with as little fanfare as you can imagine.

Sang Yi-ching, a 19-year-old 195cm university sophomore, was selected by Bank of Taiwan as the No. 1 pick in the draft. In all, 11 of 23 applicants were selected in the 20-minute draft that did not create any buzz nor much press attention.

It shouldn't have been like this, considering that Sang has led his high school Song-shan High School to the HBL (High School Basketball League) championship and was named the MVP before helping his university -- National Taiwan Normal University -- to its second consecutive UBA (University Basketball Association) title and now being named as the top SBL pick in the span of 18 months.

The reasons why Sang's story and the draft were literally overlooked, under-reported and insignificant are because:

1. Sang couldn't play for Bank of Taiwan in another three years due to a special regulation as do other draftees. Only three of the 11 newcomers can play in the SBL next season. We'll get to that later.
2. There are not too many players SBL teams can choose from. Most of these players are not SBL-ready.
3. The seven SBL teams do not exactly need new bloods because of their loaded rosters.
4. Unlike the NBA or other leagues in Asia, the SBL does not market the draft at all. The draft is not a significant and marketable event in its eyes. Actually, it probably isn't.
5. Believe it or not, most SBL teams do not appreciate the idea of a DRAFT in the first place.

The craziest part of the SBL draft is that most of the selected players can not play for the teams immediately, and that's why teams have been lukewarm about the draft.

Traditionally, men or women, college players dominated the player pools in Taiwan. Things were the same even with the existence of a true professional league -- the CBA (Chinese Basketball Alliance) from 1994-1999. Only about 50 percent of Taiwanese players, at best, could be seen as full-time pro players. The majority of them are student athletes in colleges.

In other words, there's not much difference between AMATEUR basketball and PRO basketball in Taiwan because most players in the pro or semi-pro leagues are college students, who are supposed to be amateur.

While some players played for the pro teams and their college teams at the same time, some played exclusively for pro teams. For those who played both ends, they apparently focused more on the pro game and tanked in the college competitions. It was probably what they had to do especially when the pro season and the college basketball season overlapped.

Universities were not happy that these players with athletic scholarships spent much of their energy playing for pro teams and got paid, rather than representing their schools in the UBA.

Chinese Taipei University Sports Federation (CTUSF), the university athletics governing body, has been desperate to change that. It worked out a four-year deal with the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association (CTBA) to phase out the abnormality.

Starting this year, college players can only choose to play either in the SBL or in the university league. The regulation makes both players and teams have second thoughts. For players who enter the draft, they will have to make sure they will be selected. After that, they will have to make sure they will receive playing time in the SBL. Otherwise, they will have to sit on the SBL bench because they can no longer play in the university league.

For SBL teams, they will have to make sure the player they pick is worth the wait. In Sang's case, BOT will have to wait until he graduates from college in 2013 to have his service.

Some argue that the draft is meaningless because these team are selecting players ineligible to sign. And these players can not help them on the court anyway.

The draft system was established in aims of balancing the talent gap between top tier teams and the bottom-dwellers. However, teams with large budget, like Yulon Luxgen, are against the draft privately since they recruited -- and paid -- prospects as early as the players were in high schools. Women's teams in Taiwan even started paying young players in junior high school. Naturally, a fair draft system is the last thing they want, because it keeps them from tying up all those young talent.

Take Chou Po-chen, who was drafted by KKL in this year's draft, for example. Rumors said Chou, a university sophomore who made Taiwan NT roster this year, was going to sign with Yulon. Chou mysteriously disappeared from the draft on Sept. 1. According to a KKL coach, who attended the draft ceremony, Chou did attend the draft but he was escorted away by staff member of Yulon, which obviously did not like the idea of seeing its recruits to accept team jersey from opposing team and pose for photos.

Team representatives have been complaining about the lack of a 'system' in Taiwanese basketball for years. Now that the CTBA tries to establish a system, and guess what these teams say and do? They don't care about the future of the league nor the miserable attendance record. All they want to know is whether they can get any player they want and pay him less.

Now let's review the past SBL drafts.

Year Team with No. 1 pick Top pick Selected players/Total applicants
2010 BOT Sang Yi-ching 11 / 23
2009 BOT Doug Creighton 5 / 12
2008 BOT Chen Kuo-wei 19 / 56
2007 BOT Wu Fong-cheng 22 / 89

Have you found anything interesting? Yes, Bank of Taiwan, the perennial laughing stock of the league, have occupied the No. 1 top pick spot for four straight years thanks to its dismal records. Three years later, Wu Fong-cheng has transferred to Yulon and Chen Kuo-wei has had only limited contribution. I'm not sure where Doug Creighton, who I think very well deserved more playing time in BOT, will play next season.

A total of 57 players were selected in these drafts. I wonder how many of them are eligible to play in the SBL and how many of them were actually signed to a contract. Less than 10 percent, maybe.

So, does a draft system functional in Taiwanese basketball? It appears that the answer is negative. However, I argue that the system should be kept in place so teams will have a level playing field and the rich teams will not be able to collect all the good players.

On the other hand, if small-budgeted teams like Bank of Taiwan -- Yes, this bank prints bills, but this team doesn't have money -- doesn't try to do anything to improve itself, it will keep losing players.

It's the same for the SBL, which has done too little to advance the league since it's established in 2004 with a hope of reviving Taiwanese basketball. The SBL teams need to stop being selfish and start supporting and implementing everything that's good for the development of the league and local basketball before it's too late.
