Andy Sherwell Steps Down - by Eurobasket News

After guiding the Diamond Valley Senior Mens program through a tough transition period in the past 18 months, Head Coach and mentor Andy Sherwell has decided to leave the Diamond Valley club and pursue other interests next year.

Andy has guided the mens program through a very tough period after previous Head Coach Steve Smith resigned before the end of the 2011 season for personal reasons. Andy came in and added stability and reignited the program over the next 18 months and was responsible for some very good results during his time at the club.

A respected coach in his own right due to his association with various Dandenong teams including the current WNBL Champions as an assist coach, the style of play, passion for his team and the respect from all at the club is what Andy will be remembered for in his brief but productive stay at the Eagles nest.

Director of Coaching, Alan McAughtry It is always hard when a person of Andys ability leaves a club, his ability to motivate and educate his players and coaches is second to none. I have known Andy for many years during our battles during our junior coaching days and he is a class act on and off the floor.

His start to this season was indicative of his impact how ever with all sports, injuries and luck play a huge roll in the outcome and Andy had his fair share of bad luck and injuries to key players.

Andy will have many opportunities that will see him progress with his coaching, I am certain of that. There are things that as coaches we want to be in place and as a club we are striving to reach that. We could not give Andy what he needed at this point in time but totally understand and support him in his decision.

The club wishes Andy all the best in his future coaching and will always be a welcomed figure back at the Eagles nest.

Martin Samarco Looking To Continue To Light Up The Score Board In Turkey - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber

The German PRO A have lost a super player in Martin Samarco (191-G-85, college: Bowling Green) who will be earning his money this season in Turkey for Mutlu Aku Selcuk Universitesi Konya. Samarco is a 26 year old 191cm scoring machine guard from Michigan that played two seasons in the German PRO A. He is a great example of how hard work and dedication can keep a career going despite tough odds. After playing at Bowling Green (NCAA) and finishing his NCAA career playing 31 games and averaging19.5ppg, 3.6rpg, 2.3apg, FGP: 39.5%, 3Pts: 32.9%, FT: 77.0%, he started his professional career in 2007 with high expectations. He played for Porvoon Tarmo (Finland-Korisliiga) averaging 20.4ppg, 4.5rpg, 3.4apg, 1.5spg, FGP: 45.0%, 3PT: 39.5%, FT: 70.6%, With his professional basketball career in full swing, he unfortunately suffered a nasty foot injury from an intentional foul which would set his career back for some years. He finally could play again in 2009 for the Holland Blast (IBL) and again in 2010. Then he got a new chance in 2010 in Europe making his debut in Germany for the Webmoebel Baskets Paderborn (Germany-Pro A) playing 19 games and averaging 16.9ppg, 2.8rpg, 1.3apg, 1.1spg, FGP: 55.6%, 3PT: 34.6%, FT: 83.0%. He stepped up his game further last season for BG Karlsruhe where he also had superb teammates with players like ex German national player Rouven Roessler and Michael Stockton, the son of NBA legend John Stockton. He led the PRO A in scoring playing 28 games and averaging 20.8ppg), 3.9rpg, 2.1apg, 1.0spg, FGP: 52.1%, 3PT: 39.4%, FT: 81.7%. He scored in double figures in 27 of 28 games. He scored more than 30 points including three games in a row. Samarco will definitely be missed in the BG Karlsruhe scoring department, but maybe not so much in the one on one battles with teammates. He is a big guard and I will stay humble and say that he would win a one on one game, stated Michael Stockton. Samarco now will bring his explosive scoring game to Turkey to Mutlu Aku Selcuk Universitesi Konya that finished with a 30-8 record in the Turkish TB2L. He will be missed in the German basketball scene, but with continued success on the court and continued development might just be interesting for a Beko BBL team in the future.

Damon Jones & Je'Land Head Mercyhurst Northeast CC Guards Are Explosive!! - by Vance Marbury

Damon Jones a 6'1" Guard from Cleveland, Ohio stared at St. Peter Chanel High School. Damon was 1st Team All State in Ohio and scored over 1000 pts in high school. Damon is an explosive guard, with very good ball handling ability. Damon can pass the ball off the dribble really well also. Scoring over 1000 pts in high school tells you that Damon can score, but he is most effective when he is being aggressive and attacking the basket.

Damon during the 2012 JT Focus Mgt Cleveland Am Pro Basketball Summer League proved against Division I guards and european pros, that Mercyhurst Northeast got a steal. Once Damon improves on his outside shooting and understanding of how to play the game, Damon upside will manifest itself!!

Je'Land Head a 6'0" guard from Shaker Heights, Ohio showed tremendous patience during his senior year. Je'Land missed quite a few games during his senior season and the oppurtunity to prove to college coaches, that he deserved a Division I scholarship.

Now at Mercyhurst Northeast Je'Land can take the time to develop his skills more, get stronger, and prepare himself to take the Juco scene by storm. Je'Land is extremely quick, has superior ball-handling ability, great court vision, defensive tenacity, and a desire to be great.

Damon Jones, Je'Land Head, and Robert Fomby (Shaker Hts High School) will prove to be a formidable guard combination for all opponents that face Mercyhurst Northeast CC during the 2012-13 season

Alfonzo The Present Houston - North Carolina Central, MEAC Conference "Ready or Not, Here He Comes!!!" - by Vance Marbury

Alfonzo "The Present" Houston - North Carolina Central, MEAC Conference Are Yall Ready!!!

Alfonzo Houston 6'3" Guard from Cleveland Heights, Ohio is getting ready to embark on his first Division I season and there is no question he is ready to Do Work!!!

Alfonzo after not qualifying in high school attended and played for State Fair CC in Missouri. During the Summer of 2011 Alfonzo was invited to the Jerry Mullens top 100 camp as an invitee. Day 1 Alfonzo put on a scoring display that caught all the scouts eyes. Day 2 The Present was invited back to again compete, where the offensive and defensive pressure he put on the top Juco players was relentless. From there that lead to a great Sophomore season where "The Present" averaged 17.8 pts, 3.5 rebs, 2.9 asts, and 1.29 stls per game. Simply put Mr. Houston is a player, who can score, rebound, block shots, and what college coaches would call the IT Factor, that thing that you cant teach, that some people are just born with.

Now Mr. Houston is getting ready to take the MEAC by storm. Some say why the MEAC, and I asked Mr. Houston why he turned down schools such as Wright St. Eastern Kentucky, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, IPFW to attend North Carolina Central and he simply Alfonz stated "I Felt Like I Was at Home, when I went to visit the school."

Mr. Houston has been the catalyst and leader for some of the younger Cleveland Am Pro Basketball League Players, that have to go to Junior College to watch and try to model his positive attributes.

Mr. Houston was the 2011 JT Focus Mgt Cleveland Am Pro Summer League MVP that featured a long list of top Cleveland, Ohio college players, european and NBA pros. So there is no question he is ready for the MEAC Conference, I just hope they are ready for him. He earned his nickname "The Present" for his play during the summer league. Both Iverson and Marbury among other players have elaborated how the benefits of playing overseas are endless. For many players it an opportunity to grow their popularity across the globe.

His hardwork has brought him several prestiges awards like the 2011/2012 FIBA LNBP Sponsor Caliente Player Of The Year, Eurobasket Guard Of The Year, and Eurobasket Import Of The Year. He received these honors after ranking #1 in points with 30 per game and #1 in assist with 8 per game. All this hard work paid dividends as Majic recently signed an 8 month contract worth $120,000 with Euro Basketball Power House Pizza Express Apollon Limassol. Those benefits of playing overseas shined through in his contract as he received a car, an apartment among several other kickbacks to play for the Euro Power House.

Much like Allen Iverson, Dorseys style of play brings fans to their feet and has them wanting to attend game after game. University of Washington beats CAI Zaragoza in OT, 74-73 - by Eurobasket News

Shawn Kemp Jr (206-F) hit a six-foot jump hook as the shot clock was expiring with 20 seconds left in overtime to cap a furious rally and push Washington to a 74-73 win over Zaragoza at Pricipe Felipe Pavilion on Wednesday .

The Huskies improved to 2-0 in their 16-day foreign tour, but needed a prayer to be answered to get that second win.

Abdul Gaddy (190-G-92) took an inbound pass after a made free throw put the Huskies down 66-63 with two seconds remaining. He dribbled twice and launched a shot from about 10 feet behind half court that hit nothing but the bottom of the net.

"It looked good after it left my hand, so I thought it had a chance," said Gaddy, who scored a team-high 17 points.

He said the only time he hit a similar shot under the same circumstances came in high school at a Torrey Pines tournament.

Washington was fortunate to even be in position to send the game into overtime. Former UCLA player Michael Roll (196-G-87, college: UCLA) was fouled on the Husky end of the court after Aziz N'Diaye (213-C-88) stuffed home an uncontested basket to make it a two point advantage for Zaragoza. Roll could have iced the game, but missed the first free throw before hitting the second, setting the scene for the wild finish in regulation.

The Huskies scored the first four points of overtime - an N'Diaye put back dunk and a C.J. Wilcox floater - before Zaragoza got on the board with a pair of free throws from Pedro Llompart (190-G-82), who had a game-high 18 points.

Andrews hit a jumper to give UW the 72-68 advantage, but Zaragoza answered back with two more free throws by Llompart, who finished 11-for-12 from the line overall. The Huskies turned the ball over for the 21st time on the ensuing possession and Roll put-back his own shot with 45 seconds left in the game to give Zaragoza the 73-72 lead.

The Huskies worked the ball around the perimeter on their next possession before finding a tightly-guarded Kemp down low, who popped his shot in over the defenders' extended arms. The basket was just the second of the night for the Husky sophomore.

Zaragoza had plenty of time to retake the lead, but missed a floater in the lane. They retained possession with 2 seconds remaining when the ball went out off the Huskies, but a contested shot by Chad Toppert hit short on the rim.

"I really like how our guys persevered," Husky Coach Lorenzo Romar said after the gritty win. "We got better after our first game and improved. That's what this is all about - making improvements.

"We've been pretty resilient in two games now."

Washington jumped out to an 11-8 lead after the first quarter when they held Zaragoza, a top-division Spanish pro team, without a field goal. But, free throws kept the host team close early, and in fact, late too. Zaragoza made 27-of-33 free throws, while the Huskies made only 3-of-13 from the line.

UW was up 15-12 in the second quarter when Toppert, who played collegiately at New Mexico, outscored the Huskies by himself 12-2 to put his team up 24-17.

Zaragoza took a 29-23 lead into halftime and scored first in the second half before the Huskies went on a 8-0 run of their own to knot the game back up at 31. The home team scored the next four points to go back up, before Andrew Andrews notched the next six points for the Dawgs, highlighted by a four-point play.

UW was up 45-42 heading into the fourth quarter before the pros from Zaragoza went on an 11-2 run to take the lead again. The Huskies came out of a timeout and went on a 9-4 run, highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers from Desmond Simmons and Scott Suggs.

Xavi Hernandez would hit a 3-point basket with 3:26 remaining in regulation before the Huskies' defense clamped down. Hernandez' field goal was the last of regulation for Zaragoza.

"We played really good defense in spurts but still had some rough patches," said Gaddy. "We shored up on some turnovers, but we still had too many. We can improve on that.

"Overall, we have good chemistry out there and really enjoy playing with each other."

Andrews and Suggs were second in scoring among Huskies behind Gaddy, each tallying 13 points.

N'Diaye recorded a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. He also had two assists, a blocked shot and a steal on the night.

The Huskies controlled the glass for much of the game and outrebounded Zaragoza by a 49-29 margin.

Washington will pile in a bus tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. and make the six hour ride to Nice, France. They will remain there until Sunday, Sept. 2 and play two more games during their stop in Nice.

Glasgow Rocks strengthen their backcourt - by Eurobasket News

Glasgow Rocks strengthen their backcourt with the acquisition of US Import Donald Robinson (193-F, college: W.Virginia Tech) as move to Commonwealth Arena gets closer.
Glasgow Rocks have added some extra length and talent to their backcourt with the acquisition of 64 guard, Donald Robinson. Robinson will be coming off a successful 2011/12 season with West Virginia Tech, where he averaged 15ppg and 2.5 apg.
The 64 athletic guard will have big shoes to fill as he effectively replaces last seasons stand out player Mychal Green, who recently signed with AS SOLEUVRE in Luxemburg. Green will be sorely missed, but Coach Davis is confident that Robinson will be a worthy adversary in the absence of Green.
Coach Davis had this to say: I spotted Donald in a showcase in Vegas where he really stood out on all dimensions. He is long and very athletic for his position and can really put the ball in the basket. I think he has the versatility to play 3 positions on the floor if need be with the shooting guard his primary position. I think he will definitely do well in the league once he gets used to the style of play just as any other newcomer to the league.
With Robinson now confirmed for the 2012/13 season the Rocks are very close to having a full roster with only a few spots remaining to fill. These positions will be announced in the coming days with the squad due to begin their official pre-season training on the 3rd September. This season should be a memorable one for the Glasgow based side as they get ready to make the move to their new Home in the East End of Glasgow at the Brand New Commonwealth Arena!
Glasgow Rocks General Manager, Daniel Bajwoluk, is excited about the upcoming season and all that it could bring; We believe we have a very talented and capable squad that will do Glasgow proud both on and off the court this season. Our scheduled move to the Brand New Commonwealth Arena in the East End has really given us all something to look forward to and everyone associated with the club is expecting 2012/13 to be a very memorable season for us.
Rocks fans are reminded that they will get their first glimpse of the new look team on September 9th when the Glasgow Rocks host the USA Select Squad at the Kelvin Hall ISA, tip-off @ 5:00pm. Tickets for this event are now online at www.glasgowrocks.co.uk.
The Rocks first Official Home BBL Fixture will take place on the 7th October at the Brand New Commonwealth Arena @ 5:00pm when they take on the reigning BBL Champions, Newcastle Eagles.

Greece organised a fantastic FIBA 3x3 World Championship - by Diamadis Farmakis

In the beautiful Zappeion and its classical Greek columns, the Hellenic Basketball Federation provided a perfect backdrop for the first ever edition of the FIBA 3x3 World Championship. Everyone who was involved, is already reflecting on what is widely considered a resounding success.

Located in central Athens, within walking distance of the Greek parliament as well as the famous Panathenaic Olympic Stadium, it not only drew seasoned basketball fans, but also drew many curious tourists and passers-by as the bleachers remained full, even when the home team was nowhere to be seen

The Olympic spirit prevailed throughout, with competitiveness, sportsmanship and friendship coming together as players from far and wide shared the hotel, the buses, as well as dining tables, stories and Facebook accounts.

It was a first ever not only for the event as a whole, but also for international mixed competition.

Sixteen countries came head-to-head with teams composed of two men and two women, in a straight knock-out tournament that caught the imagination of the capacity crowd.

On the court, France topped the medal table, pocketing gold in the Mixed competition, silver in the Mens and Womens, and bronze in the Skills Contest thanks to Sylvie Guszczynski.

Ukraine, who like France reached the Semi-Finals in all three team categories, bagged bronze in the Mixed and the Mens categories.

Serbia and USA won gold in the Mens and the Womens competitions respectively, while Pirgit Puu of Estonia won the Skills contest, Czech Republics Stanislav Votroubek the Shoot-Out contest and Venezuelan Deivi Aanguren the Dunk contest.

''This was a fantastic first edition'', said FIBA Secretary General and IOC Member Patrick Baumann.

''The players and organisers of this Championship have set a very high standard for those to follow''.

''For this, we must be extremely grateful to the Hellenic Basketball Federation''.

''They have strongly believed in this project from the very beginning''.

''Their enthusiasm spilled over and everyone has absolutely loved this tournament, from the players to the fans, to people who know nothing about basketball''
