With the 2012-2013 Beko BBL season only two weeks away, the Fraport Skyliners and fan base got a inbetween breakfast-lunch shock as likeable Johannes Herber (197-G-83, agency: Pro One Sports, college: W.Virginia) announceed his retirement. Herber was going to start his seventh professional basketball season, but at the age of 29, the 197cm guard from Darmstadt, Germany had to listen more to his body than his heart. "The main reason for my decision is my heel. Last season, I carried a chronical inflammation with me. Therefore I took a longer break this summer to try to let it heel, but as the pre season came, I started getting problems again and seem to be going in the same direction as last season. I saw that I dont have the strength and motivation to be in agony for another season again", stressed Johannes Herber. Last season for the Fraport Skyliners, he played
EuroCup: 6 games: 3.7ppg, 1.5rpg, 2.2apg; German League: 33 games: 4.8ppg, 2.1rpg, 1.3apg.
Herber started his basketball career in 1999 with TV Langen who already then was making waves as a big talent. In 2002, he decided to experience a four year college basketball ride and played at
W.Virginia (NCAA). He played a total of 128 NCAA games and in his senior year played
9.3ppg, 3.5rpg, 4.4apg, 1.0spg, FG: 40.6%, 3PT: 25.4%, FT: 79.2%. There he played with ex Beko BBL players like D or Fischer, Mike Gnasey and Frank Young. In 2006-2007, he started his professional basketball career with Alba Berlin. There he played until February 2010, where he went to the Walter Tigers Tuebingen. He never got a real chance to show his full potential with Alba Berlin as he suffered a few ACL injuries limiting him to only 51 Beko BBL games. He won a Beko BBL title in 2008 and cup in 2009. In the 2010-2011 season, he played for the
Walter Tigers Tuebingen (1.Bundesliga) 34 games: 6.6ppg, 2.5rpg, 2.0apg, FGP: 50.0%, 3PT: 30.8%, FT: 66.7%. "I am sorry that I have to leave the team at this difficult phase. I want to thank the club and fans for supporting me and the cooperation. Now I am taking a parental leave, but feel connected to the organization and would like to sit down with them and see if we can come together in another form", said Johannes Herber. "We respect the decision of Johannes. However it hits us at a very unfavorable time. It is more or less impossible to get a German player of his quality so soon before the start of the season. Despite his decision, we will take him and put him on the report sheet and leave our options open", commented Skyliner sport director Kamil Novak.
