  ASEAN LEAGUE

Beermen take 2-1 lead in ABL Playoffs - by Aris Ignacio

The San Miguel Beermen leaned on veteran Asi Taulava (206-C-73, college: BYU-Hawaii) to avert a late collapse as the team escaped with a 70-62 win over Sports Rev Thailand Slammers and move within one game of making the Finals of the ASEAN Basketball League last May 28.

Taulava finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds but, more importantly, held his own against the Slammers after the Beermen's two imports fouled out one after the other late in Game 3 of the semifinals series at the Nimbutr Stadium in Bangkok.

The Beermen now hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series with a chance to close out the Slammers and barge into the Finals with another win in Game 4 Thursday night also in the Thai capital.

San Miguel won despite losing grip of a 21-point first half lead as it survived a spirited Slammers second half comeback where in the end, the huge cushion was enough for the Beermen to ward off the home teams endgame comeback.

Brian Williams (208-C-87, college: Tennessee) and Justin Williams (206-F/C-84, college: Wyoming) finished the game sitting on the bench as they fouled out one after the other in the midst of Thailand's endgame rally.

The Slammers were just within five points following a putback by import Christien Charles (216-F/C-81, college: Villanova) when Justin Williams was whistled for his final foul. But Taulava took charge for the Beermen, defending well against Charles until the end.

Chris Banchero (185-PG-90, college: Seattle Pacific) then hit a running shot and Eric Menk (199-F-74, college: L.Superior) banked in back-to-back jumpers to give the Beermen a 68-59 edge with 1:17 remaining in the game. Taulava later hit two crucial free throws to settle the outcome in the final 30 seconds.

Brian Williams topscored for the Beermen with 14 points before fouling out.

List of candidates for the Eurobasket 2013. - by Ivo Vukojevic

Croatian national basketball team coach - Jasmin Repesa published a list of 24 candidates for the next European championship which is played in the Republic of Slovenia this summer. A lot of star players like Dirk Nowitzki and Pau Gasol already said that they wouldn't play on the Eurobasket. The Croatian team will be also shorten for some famous names - Zoran Planinic (198-G-82, agency: XL Basketball Agency) and Marko Popovic (185-G-82, agency: Alti Sport, college: S.Idaho JC) due to the personal reasons. These two great guards showed a lot of great games this season and it's doubtless that coach Repesa will miss them this September.

There are 24 candidates who will try to earn their spot and white-and-red jersey for the upcoming Eurobasket:
Roko-Leni Ukic (196-PG-84, agency: XL Basketball Agency), Dontaye Draper (180-PG-84, college: Charleston), Rok Stipcevic (185-PG-86), Ante Delas (200-G/F-88, agency: XL Basketball Agency), Toni Prostran (181-G-91), Marko Tomas (201-G-85, agency: XL Basketball Agency), Krunoslav Simon (197-G/F-85, agency: Beo Basket), Bojan Bogdanovic (203-SG-89, agency: XL Basketball Agency), Mario Hezonja (201-G/F-95), Fran Pilepic (193-G/F-89, agency: XL Basketball Agency), Ivan Ramljak (203-SF-90), Hrvoje Peric (203-F-85), Luka Babic (201-SF-91, agency: Beo Basket), Damjan Rudez (203-F-86, agency: FCM), Dario Saric (208-F/C-94, agency: XL Basketball Agency), Mario Delas (207-F/C-90, agency: XL Basketball Agency), Damir Markota (209-F-85, agency: XL Basketball Agency), Leon Radosevic (206-C-90), Miro Bilan (215-C-89), Darko Planinic (211-C-90), Ante Tomic (217-C-87, agency: XL Basketball Agency), Luka Zoric (211-C-84), Luksa Andric (208-C-85, agency: Beo Basket) and Stanko Barac (216-C-86).

It's great to see that such a
n extra-talented players like Dario Saric (208-F/C-94, agency: XL Basketball Agency) and Mario Hezonja also got a call from Repesa in the early stage of their careers and there's a great possibility to see Dario in the Croatian senior jersey this summer. The championship starts on the September forth and Repesa already made a great schedule to prepare his troop for Slovenia.

Jason Boucher ( I know the game inside and out and can adapt to any situation needed) - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber

Jason Boucher (180-G-80, college: Grand Valley St.) is a 33 year old 180cm guard from Menominee, Michigan that just completed his seventh professional basketball season in Germany and second with the Desden Titans in the Pro B. He started his basketball career in 1998 for Grand Valley State (NCAA2) where he played until 2002. He played a total of 106 NCAA 2 games and as a senior played 28 games: 8.6ppg, 2.8rpg, 5.3apg, 2.4spg, FG: 40.4%, 3Pts: 39.8%, FT: 81.9%. He came to Germany in 2004-2005 and played for TB Weiden (Germany-Regionalliga). From 2005-2007, he played in the minor leagues in the States for Grand Rapids Flight (IBL), Michigan Mayhem (CBA), Battle Creek Knights (IBL) and Albany Patroons (CBA). In 2007-2008, he returned back to Germany to play for the Coocoon Baskets Weiden. From 2008-2010, he played for Heimerer Schulen Basket Landsberg (Germany-Regionalliga) where he tore up the league averaging 28,0ppg in those two seasons. In 2010-2011, he played for the BiG Oettinger Rockets Gotha (Germany-ProB) playing 17 games averaging 15.6ppg, 2.5rpg, 2.5apg, 1.6spg, FGP: 60.7%, 3PT: 36.5%, FT: 84.5%. He spoke to eurobasket about basketball.

Jason you just completed your second season with the Dresden Titans helping the team remain in the Pro B with a double overtime game against Konstanz. What memories do you have of that game?

Well it was a crazy game that is for sure. I think we were up 9pts with 3mins to play in regulation and let the lead slip away and they forced overtime. I was proud of my guys for keeping their composure and playing until the final buzzer sounded at the end of that 2nd overtime.

Which player do you remember most in that game Andrew Jones or Frederick Hennigsen? Both had huge games and were the teams MVPs in the game?

They both had nice games but if I had to pick one I would say Frederick. He was tough to handle that game and he single handedly kept his team in that game!

If you look back at the season was a disappointing team season saved with that amazing win or were you happy coming from the Regionaliga and staying in the PRO B?

Well personally I think it was a frustrating year for us. We had a good enough team to make the playoffs but that double overtime win saved us from moving down. For the first year in the Pro B, staying in the league was our main goal I guess.

You were very dominating in the Regionaliga, but had a very strong season in the Pro B averaging 19.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 2.8apg, 1.8spg, FGP: 53.8%, 3PT: 38.8%, FT: 83.2%. How pleased were you with your season?

It was a different year for me, I was the point guard the first half of the season and then coach moved me to the shooting guard for the 2nd half of the year. My numbers were good but of course being the player and competitor that I am I could of done more to help my team. But I was pleased with my year!

You had no problems making the transition from the Regionaliga to the Pro B. What is the biggest difference between both leagues?

To me I dont really think there is much difference, the German players are more experienced and better in Pro B. I think can adapt to any level here in Germany and be successful as long as I play my game!

You played against many tough guards in the league, but who was the hardest opponent that you played against?

There were a lot of tough guards this season but if I have to pick one I would say Parker from Leverkussen. He had the freedom and ball in his hands every minute of every game and with his skill set there is not much anyone could do to stop him!

You recently announced that you wont be returning to the Dresden Titans. What was the main reason for making this decision and how difficult was it?

Tell you the truth it wasnt my decision, the team told me they wanted to move in a different direction and concentrate on young German players at my position for the upcoming season. I would have loved to stay in Dresden and finish my career there but its a business and I understand it. I am very thankful for the opportunity the Titan family gave me and it was a wonderful 2 years for me that I will never ever forget!

The fans showed a lot of love by overflowing your email box with many messages. If you look back at your two years in Dresden, what will always remain your fondest memory?

Dresden has the best fans ever and showed me so much love and continue to show me how much they appreciate me. I dont think i will have just one memory that sticks out. My teammates I had in Dresden were like brothers to me, not just teammates. The fans no matter if we were losing or winning showed support and filled the Margon Arena week in and week out. Lots of memories I will cherish forever!

How much fun was it playing with Americans Andrew Jones and Jared Benson. Can these guys make the next step to a higher level?

I had a great time playing with them both. Jared has been a friend of mine for years now and playing with a close friend like that made it feel like home. Drew was great also, great player and even better person. I think they both could play at any level if they given the chance!

You are 32 and want to continue to play at a high level. Do you think that you can still make the step to a higher level at your age?

I just turned 33 three weeks ago, haha. I dont think my age has anything to do with it. I am in the best shape of my life and healthy. I know I can play at any level if given the chance. My work ethic and determination and the way I play the game could help any team that gives me a chance!

You have played in Germany since 2007. Would you be willing to explore and play in another country or is your first preference Germany?

Im a basketball player period. It doesnt matter to me what country I play in given the opportunity. I love Germany dont get me wrong and wouldnt mind staying here but again any country anywhere is good for me.

What besides your experience is your biggest asset on the court right now?

My biggest asset now besides my experience I think is probably my basketball I.Q. I know the game inside and out and can adapt to any situation needed. I can score if needed, I can run the team and be an assist guy, whatever the team needs from me I can do.

If you played agent and could sell yourself best in a few sentences to teams why you would be the prefect player for them how would you do it?

Well like I said before my basketball I.Q. is very high and with my experience and the ability to score the basketball and do the little things that doesnt show up on the stat sheet, I think I am the perfect fit for a team that is looking for a point guard or shooter. I also can help develop the younger guards on our team. Not only am I a good basketball player but I think I am a better person and teammate.

What was the first thing that you did when you touched on American soil?

haha the first thing I did was go to Taco Bell, those new cool ranch tacos are amazing

What is going to be something you will do this summer that you havent been able to do in a while?

Well my cousin Scott and his fiance Hannah just had their first child and I only got to see the baby (Cam) couple of days over xmas, so I am definately goning spend time with them and mostly just seeing my family and friends for the summer.

How does a summer work out day look like for Jason Boucher?

Well I am pretty busy actually in the summer, I work basketball camps, tournaments for kids all summer, so I am in the gym everyday. Just repetition for me, shooting jumpers, ball handling, you know all the things I been doing since I been in elementary school

What was the last DVD movie that you saw?

Actually just went to the movies and watched HangOver 3, haha.

Thanks Jason for the chat. For teams interested can reach Jason at jboucher4@hotmail.com.

Matteson's last-second three wins it for Slam - by Kip Leonetti

Evan Matteson (6'10''-C, college: Texas A&M Int.) connected on a three-pointer with one-half second remaining as the Bellingham Slam came from behind to defeat the Portland Chinooks, 106-104, in a thrilling International Basketball League contest at Whatcom Pavilion on Monday.

The Slam, which looked sluggish for much of the night, trailed by 17 early in the fourth quarter, before using a total team effort to make a comeback. Five different players scored as they whittled the deficit into single digits, at 94-85 with 5:16 left. With 36 second remaining, Morris Anderson (6'3''-G, college: W.Washington) scored on a mid-range jumper to knot the score at 102-102, before Portland's Michael Hart (6'6''-G) was successful on a putback attempt with 14 ticks left on their next possession to give the lead back to the Chinooks.

Bellingham, holding for the last shot, struggled to get a good look and time ticked down before Rico Wilkins (6'0''-PG-88, college: W.Washington) kicked the ball to Matteson, who nailed his go-ahead trey from the right corner to put the Slam up 105-104.

With half a second remaining, Portland had one last chance to win it but David Lucas (6'8''-F-82, agency: Edge Sports, college: Oregon St.) was called for a foul before the ball could be inbounded, killing their possession and a chance at their own game-winner.

Jacob Stevenson (6'4''-G-81, college: W.Washington) sealed the victory by hitting the first of his two free throws, before smartly missing his second shot to allow time to expire.

Portland came out ready to play in the first quarter, quickly building a ten-point lead, at 16-6, less than six minutes into the game. The Slam were able to respond and scored the last three buckets of the quarter to square the score at 29-all.

The second quarter was mostly even, with Portland outscoring Bellingham 27-24 to take a 56-53 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was when the Chinooks made their big push, using a late 14-0 run to break open a close game and push their advantage to 20, at 86-66. Jared Cunningham (6'9''-F-89, college: Cumberlands), who was a strong performer all night, was particularly clutch during the third as he put up 14 points.

Bellingham, winners of their eighth straight game, improved to 9-1 on the season and were led by Stevenson, who scored 23 points. Matteson finished with 16 while Wilkins and Derrick Webb (6'3''-G/F-87, college: W.Washington) each had 15.

Portland (3-5) was led by Lucas and Cunningham, who scored 37 and 35 points, respectively. Hart come up huge on the boards, pulling down a game-high 23 rebounds.

The Slam head north for their next home game, coming up on Saturday, June 1 as they host the Seattle Flight at Blaine High School. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Almost half of those were three-point attempts, of which they made 37%.
Salem was led by Kyle Long (6'3''-G, college: W.Oregon) with 30 points, 29 from Cory Largent (6'6''-G/F-80, college: W.Carolina), and 23 from Daniel Deane (6'9''-F, college: Oregon St.). Joe Burton (6'7''-F, college: Oregon St.) had an incredible 27 rebounds, just two shy of the IBL record.

  ISRAEL

Special interview with Bilal Benn - the MVP of National league - by Shai Levi

Niagara alumni guard Bilal Benn (196-G/F-86), traveled to Portugal and Lithuania before leaving a strong mark on Israel's national league. Ironi Nes-Ziona recruited Benn midseason last year and have now, led by Ben's dominant overall performances, qualified for Israel's Basketball Superleague, after winning the minor-league playoffs finals series 3:1. Ben was named Most Valuable Player. One of the main reasons that Nes Ziona's 2012-2013 campaign was so succesfull was benn super play. He led his team in almost all categories , scoring 19 points , grabing 9.7 rebounds and dishing 4.4 assists per game and showed that he is ready to play at much higher level.

1. you had an outstanding season personal wise and team wise. Sum up the season in your words.

"very emotional and physically draining because you always want more for yourself and I'm somebody whose never satisfied with my game and no matter how good I'm doing I'm always trying to figure out how can I be better all the time and sometimes it can hurt my game.. My team with through alot of struggles with ourselves and we got on one page quickly when we brought Cyrus Tate on the team".

2. You arrived here mid of last season, what are the differences between this year's team to last year's and what were the reasons for the team to move up to the Premier (Winner) league?

"Alot of differences . add on more players who can help us rather then only help there stats, the coach was more relaxed in knowing and trusting me from the start rather then waiting till the end. Just having one goal was to win the championship... Mentally I was great this year nothing could really break my faith in myself this season... And all my teammates came prepared they had a great summer also.. We just worked so hard individually and as a team That made us very strong".

3. You played with a serious injury the last playoff games - how much did it affect you and were you not afraid to risk your career by making it worst?

"It affected me alot... Specially knowing I could just risk a injury more but to know I didn't even try and let myself and my team down , I think that would hurt more then anything . My knee will heel we knew that all I have to do is strengthen it this summer it wasn't anything a surgery could do... And yes that cross my mind but I have alot of faith God brought me this far all season I do think he was gonna let anything happen to me.. I joke around alot and say I played with a halo on my head this season bc it was alot of times I was close to getting hurt and moved just In time .. So I was blessed to be able to down the stretch in the games just forget about it during money time".

4. Before you came here you have played at Portugal first league and Lithuania's. What are the differences between those and the second league here?

"Just the style of play really.. Lithuania I loved the league it was really league for men.. The toughness the whole european style I loved it.. The Intelligents is amazing .. The best shooters I ever seen ...also my coach didn't speak English so it was different ... But yea the league itself is great they really bring ya game out and make u better over there... Portugal was more of older guys and not so fast run a play .. Israel second league is more of everybody wants to score , so it kinda made it easier for me this year bc I've always done the little things my career so when I added scoring to it , it made everything in my game come together".

5. What do you think about the level of basketball in Israel and what do you think about how Israel sees its basketball?

"Honestly it's like playing in college..style of play is similar to me... I think they mirror they game after the USA alot... And the NBA".

6. As an American citizen, what do you think about Israel as a country after living here for more than a year and how would you explain the situation here to people as the states?

"Oh people from home if u live close to tel aviv your gonna love it it reminds me of cali alot.. The food is great people are great.. U can shop do whatever you want ... A beach is everywhere it's like playing in paradise".

7. Do you feel that the time period as Ness Tziona helped you to develop your skills and if so, how exactly?

"Yes I do , my coach has helped me so much to learn the point guard position . Just making a easy pass rather then looking for something more..and letting my teammates make choices rather then me trying to force a pass.. And just my confidence this year.. No matter how bad I played I had the ball in my hands at the end of the game and it's no better feeling then knowing u missed ten shots and ya coach know u gonna make the last one.....People don't know I had the keys to my gym the team gave me so I could work on my game whenever I wanted to the point where they told me I couldn't be in the gym after 12 midnight bc I would go in all kinds of hours ".

8. Since you are playing here for a season and a half, have you seen games of the Israeli Winner League, what do you think of the level? Do you think there are differences between the First league and the Second league? If so, what are they?

"Of corse better players more Americans.. I think it's a great league.. I think it's more space to do ya thing because the shooters are so great in the first league so they can't help as much.. Really a opportunity to show ya game and become a great teammate and passer.... But the talent level is thru the roof... I mean look at the rosters NBA is all over it"

9. During the time playing at the Second league, did First division league showed interest in you?

"I have no idea I tell my agents if nobody is making a offer don't even tell me because its a waste of time.. It's like getting ya first d1 letter from college it don't mean they want you your just on the mailing list incase you become a great player".

10. Do you want to continue playing for Ness Tziona at the Winner league or maybe any other team? Which First league teams you are most impressed of?

"If the details of my contract are good for me yes but I will seek my options. My teams to watch is hopeal tel aviv, maccabii, Netanya ,eliat, haifa, they all play together well... I don't know it's about timing and situation ...and if the coach will let me play my game".

11. You are a very versatile player and can play few positions, which position is your favorite?

"Love playing the point guard... Just love having the ball in my hands.. I worked hard to develop that skill.. People forget I played it In hs alot and at Villanova only when I got to Niagara I didn't play it because of four guard offense and I was the biggest guard by 4 inches ".

12. You have started playing college basketball for a big program at Villanova and transferred after two years to Niagara and became a key player over there. Looking back, how important was that move for you and did it affect your pro career?

"Yes it was very important my coach joe from Niagara was like a father from the jump he said we going to live in die with the player you are.. I can remember my first maac game he told me before I left out the locker room he said don't worry about nothing you've done everything we asked you to do just forget about everything and have fun I had 26 and 16 rebounds .. Like just him alone was important for my pro career he still messages me email all day .. It was the best move... But I learned so much from Villanova .. That's why I rebound how I do and the Intense game I bring is bc of playing there and being a winner.. I seen Randy Kyle mike and allan ray do it it would only rub off on me and I took it to Niagara with me... So both school had a huge affect on the player I am Niagara made my pro career"

13. Which players influenced you the most since you started to play basketball and who are your role models?

"Mustafa shakur from Arizona , Randy foye from Villanova and alvin willams that was with the raptors those have the most Influence on my game I'm good friends with them and watched them play a million times... And those the guys I look up to.. MY grandmother and uncles are my role models as far as off the court but on the court those guys".

14. What is your dream and what is your next move in your career?

"My dream my dreams are limited I have goals.. My goals is to one day walk in a NBA locker room rather it be practice or game and have benn on the back of the jersey..I Just want a chance a real chance not just okay we brung you in just to be here . Like they analyze me as a player and tell me if I am or not a NBA player.. And whatever the result I can live with Ima real reality type of person and I can handle the truth I handled it all my life.. And it got me my first championship every time somebody has said he can't do this I prove the wrong so I'm waiting on the next critique but till then ima enjoy this Championship".

Hawks hire Mike Budenholzer to replace Larry Drew as coach - by Eurobasket News

The Atlanta Hawks have named longtime Spurs assistant Mike Budenholzer as head coach. General manager Danny Ferry called on his past experience with the Spurs to select Budenholzer (pronounced BEW-den-holzer) on Tuesday to replace Larry Drew as coach. Drew's contract expires in June following three seasons as coach. Budenholzer spent the last 17 seasons as an assistant with the Spurts, including the last six years as the top assistant for coach Gregg Popovich . The Hawks say Budenholzer will continue serving as the Spurs top assistant until the conclusion of the NBA finals. The Spurs completed a four-game sweep of Memphis in the Western Conference finals on Monday. Ferry came to the Hawks last year after two years as vice president of basketball operations for the Spurs.

Michael Malone 'lock' to coach Kings - by Eurobasket News

The head of the group that purchased the Kings and kept them in Sacramento may not be the only key cog in their future plans to have roots with the Warriors. It now appears that Warriors assistant coach Michael Malone will be joining owner Vivek Ranadive in the state capitol. According to former New York Post columnist Peter Vecsey, Malone is a "living lock" to become the next head coach of the Kings. Vecsey didn't offer a timetable on a potential announcement, but predicted that Malone will bring his father, Brendan, along for the ride, presumably as an assistant. Malone has been with the Warriors since 2011. Prior to that, he was the lead assistant on the 2010-11 New Orleans Hornets. From 2005 to 2010, Malone served as an assistant coach during the LeBron James era in Cleveland.

Pacers win second game against Heat, even the series at 2-2 - by Eurobasket News

Indiana P. - Miami Heat 99-92
The Pacers and the Heat had been in this position before. A year ago, in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals, fans inside Bankers Life Fieldhouse waved gold towels and reveled as the Pacers - with a two-games-to-one series lead - raced ahead by 9-0 and maintained control of the game throughout the first half. On Tuesday night, it was Game 4 of the conference finals, the towels had been replaced by 'Gold Swagger' T-shirts distributed to every fan and the Heat led the series, 2-1. Everything else was eerily similar early on. The Pacers jumped out to an 11-0 edge, Heat Coach Erik Spoelstra showed his frustration on the sideline and the Heat, the N.B.A.'s defending champions, were up against it. Last year, the Heat were desperate to win Game 4, and they seized control with a third-quarter run, with LeBron James (6'8''-SF-84) and Dwyane Wade (6'4''-G-82, college: Marquette) combining for 70 points and 27 rebounds. This time, the Pacers needed to protect their home court and they did, winning by 99-92 and tying the series. Game 5 is in Miami on Thursday. The teams exchanged runs in the fourth quarter. The Pacers led by 81-72 early before Miami went on a 14-2 spree. With 5 minutes 13 seconds to play, Miami held an 89-86 advantage, but the Pacers went on an 8-0 tear and never trailed again. 'We knew we were going to take their punches,' Pacers guard George Hill said. 'And we knew we were going to have to throw punches back.' Spoelstra lamented the fourth-quarter lead that disappeared. 'They got us there in the fourth,' he said. 'We got what we wanted; it was a fourth-quarter lead, 89-86, going down the stretch. And they made bigger plays.' David West (6'8''-F-80, college: Xavier), who scored 14 points, said: 'We just didn't let each other down. We had very few breakdowns.' Despite falling behind again in the third quarter, the Pacers were clutch down the stretch. Roy Hibbert (7'2''-C-86, college: Georgetown) (23 points, 12 rebounds) played like the best player on the floor in the fourth quarter. Lance Stephenson (6'5''-F-90, college: Cincinnati) (20 points, 9-of-15 shooting) had his best outing since he scored 25 points in Indiana's closeout game against the Knicks. James scored 24 points to lead Miami before fouling out with 56 seconds to play. Mario Chalmers (6'1''-PG-86, college: Kansas) had 20, his high game of the playoffs. It was the first time James had fouled out since June 3, 2012, in a playoff game against the Celtics. It took what looked pretty clearly like a James flop for the Heat to finally stop the Pacers' early run. West blocked a pair of James's attempts at the rim before James - who has rankled some fans with perceived flopping this postseason - appeared to lurch his upper body backward and fall to the floor with dramatic flair. As the fans booed, James made two free throws. The Heat seemed to be awakened when George drove past James for a two-handed dunk and hung on the rim to make it 14-4. James immediately responded with a 3-point shot, and he stopped and stared into George's face before making his way back down the court. Less than five minutes later, the Heat had their first lead at 17-16. A technical foul on James helped launch an 18-8 run, capped by West's first basket of the game, that gave the Pacers a 34-25 lead with 7:33 to play in the second quarter. But after George left the game with his third foul with 4:46 to go, the Heat closed the half on an 18-9 run and trailed by only 48-47. Still, for the defending champions, it was a far cry from the 70 points they had scored in the first half of Game 3. Game 4 picked up extraordinary intensity as Indiana closed the third quarter on a 23-10 tear. With the score 71-67 in favor of Indiana, shortly after Hill and James had traded 3-point baskets, James closed out on a Hill breakaway and swatted his layup attempt out to center court. George and Ray Allen collided going for the ball, with George whistled for a foul. As George smacked the flood in frustration, Pacers Coach Frank Vogel gestured angrily from the bench and was called for a technical foul. In the final moments of the quarter, James threw a left elbow as he dribbled by West and was hit with a foul. The Pacers inbounded under their basket with two seconds on the clock, giving Stephenson just enough time to nail a 3-pointer from the corner as time expired. Indiana led by 77-70. 'Our backs are against the wall,' Vogel said at the earlier shootaround. 'We saw how the champs responded when their backs were against the wall when they lost home-court advantage. We will respond the same way.' There will be no looking ahead to a possible matchup with San Antonio for the Pacers. As Vogel said, 'What's happening out there in the Western Conference means nothing to us.' Vogel was asked before the game if he was aware that many pundits and fans were already sizing up a Heat-Spurs Finals. 'That's for the media to talk about,' he said. With this series tied at 2-2, such talk will go quiet immediately. Courtesy of: nytimes.com

Exclusive interview with Coach Goran Nogic - 14 successfull seasons in Portugal - by Tamara Ruzic

Serbian Coach Goran Nogic has been living for 14 years in Portugal. He is an Assistant Coach for Senior Team & Coordinator of Young Teams of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Lisbon. Also, he is the founder of Academy Monte Basket, Albufeira, Portugal. Before Portugal, Nogic has worked as a Coach for Basketball Club Sombor, Basketball Club Mladost U-19 Team, and Basketball Club Partizan U-17 . With his busy schedule, Nogic found some free time to answere the questions for eurobasket.

1. Last weekend your team, Benfica, won Academica and you are new/old Champion of Portugal?
It was great final series, one game won in last second shot, the other in overtime, 4 games with full gyms, games that Portuguese basketball need. I think that our team was better; we were team with more individual quality, with more team solutions and team with bigger rotation. Academica team plays with a lot wish and enthusiasm and I would like to congratulate them for that.

2. Can you tell us something about this final series of Play-Off?
We beat Academica in first two games in our court. First game we won with last second shot (69-67). In the second game we change some thinks in our defense and we beat them with big different (94-62). Third game at Academica court, we were almost all game 5-10 points in front but they managed to leave gave at overtime and beat us by 5 points (79-74). In the fourth game Academica start better game and won 1st quarter by 24-12. After that our players change our defensive attitude and we beat 2nd quarter by 25-11, 3rd by 23-16 and last one by 31-26 and final score was 91-77.

3. It was yours 6th trophy at last two years that you work as assistant coach of Carlos Lisboa, the best Portuguese player of all time?
Yes we won together two Championships, Super Cup, League Cup and more two Cups of opening tournaments that has the name Trophy of Antonio Prates

4. In the same time you are Coordinator of all youth teams that are also very successful. Can you tell us something more about Benfica Basketball School?
We have more than 250 girls and boys, young players divided in 18 teams from U-8 until U-20 (senior B team). With them work 18 coaches, and I am Coordinator of all them but in the same time I work as Head Coach of Senior B team. From my first season in Benfica (2007/2008) until today we won 19 Championship, 7 National and 12 Regional Championship (with U-20 team I was 4 times Champion). During this last 5-6 years more than 50 the best young players of our team play for Portuguese National Selections and in the same time in this moment in the Professional Portuguese League (LPB) play more than 30 players that make your formation in our basketball school. Sometimes I ask myself: what I have to do the next to make even better, and isnt easy to find right answer.

5. Tell us more about PT league?
Portuguese League is different than 5-6 years ago. Financial crises the first touch sports clubs and culture. As basketball in Portugal is on shade of football industry it was even bigger impact. In the Professional League can play 3 foreigner player, but most of teams had 1 or 2 foreign players. Some of them are or young players from NCAA that like to start his Europe carrier or some of them are the players on the end of his career. In the same time some of the best Portuguese players already finish his career or are on the end of career with 35 or more years. On the other side, young players dont believe that they can have professional career as basketball players and in the case that they have some ambition they looking for the way how to go to Spain or some the other Europe basketball.

6. Do you follow the Serbian League?
My first interest is Euroligue, after that I like to watch some game from ABA League, and when Serbian League start with teams from ABA League I also follow that. Sometimes I also follow some games of youth teams.

7. Whats the difference btw Serbian and PT league?
On one side there is big deference, but on the other side there are some things that are very similar. I think that just 2-3 maybe 4 teams from Portugal can play in Serbian League. Budgets and infrastructure are similar: small number of the clubs with stable budget, and a lot of clubs with stabie - continues problems. Infrastructure and condition for work if we take out the best clubs, are similar, but big difference is that I think Serbian players like to work more, or at least have better habits to work.

8. Any Serbian players in Portugal?
Just several young players: Stefan Djukic (Sampaense), Tatiana Milovac (Boa Viagem), and my daughter Jovana Nogic (Benfica). All of them have Serbian-Portuguese nationality; it means they play as domestic players.

9. Why they are not there?
First of all because there are some myths that the Serbian players are very expensive. On the other side Portuguese League is not attractive for Serbian players because just some women teams play in Europe. Man teams dont play in any Europe competition, even Euro Challenge.

10. Your dauther is playing for Portugal National Team?
First of all she is still very young just 15 years. She has Serbian-Portuguese nationality and in the case that both teams wants her (as it is happened this year) she still can choose between Serbian or Portuguese National team. As she last year was just invited by Serbian National team, she decided together with her mother and me, to play just for Serbia until her 18 years, in the case that she is an option of Serbian National Team Coaches. Last season she played for Benfica U-19 and also for our senior team that competed at 3rd Division. She also was Champion, but better than father because her team didnt lose any game.

11. You have your Academy? Whats the goal of Monte Basket?
Academy Monte Basket was founded in 2006 , with the aim to promote and develop basketball during summer periods, when most clubs do not train. Our Academy is open for all players and coaches who are willing to improve their skills and have a wish to change their experience.

12. What makes the Academy Monte Basket special?

Other camps mostly have fun character they are a part of participants' leisure time. The Camp Monte Basket is oriented to the professional work with children in order for them to learn and improve their basketball. The work at the Academy is divided into the Camp for Specializations in offensive technique for different positions as point guards, shooting guards or post players, end from 2009 also we have PRO Camp. It is established to improve physical and playing performance of athletes that prepare to start professional career.

13. Your philosophy of the basketball game is the same in the club and at the Academy?

I think that all the coaches on the world like that their teams and players play hard and strong in defense, make rebounds, run fast break, read and understand game, be good shooters and dunk 20-30 times on the game. But this is just the dream. On the other side most of them forget to look for the right way that can help them to touch your dreams. Coach teaches players, and for that reason cant forget to teach your-self. In the same time on the court you have give to your players and club that you work always more than they expect. Just on this way you will receive what you are deserve.

14. Next season?
Benfica is the club with most members in the world - people that pay all the months a membership, to help your club. They help club, but they also wants to see your club always wining. And as Carlos Lisboa likes to say any of us when sing for Benfica sing to be winner it means that our obligation is always same: forget that you were champion, and prepare yourself to be again. With condition for the work that President of Benfica Mr. Luis Filipe Vieira give us, our obligation but in the same time happiness is to always win.

15. Personal goal? Professional Ambitions?
On professional side I would like to continue to help my team to change position and interest of people for basketball as sport in Portugal, but also and position of Portuguese basketball in Europe. In the same time I am hope that I will finished my Master and that I will have good health and enough motivation as until now to teach young players and continue to learn from them.

Thank you for the interview Goran, Eurobasket and Tamara Ruzic wishes you a lot of success in your career in Portugal.

SERBIAN BASKETBALL FEDERATION CALLS OFF SECOND TEAMS IN LEAGUES - by Eurobasket Center

After many appeals for regularity in Second division, Serbian Basketball Federation (SBF) decided to call off second teams in next season. It means that second team of Partizan Mt:S, Partizan Mt:S MT will not have a place in this league in season 2013/14. Second team of Partizan Mt:s was used in this league for its youngsters to play and earn experience of playing in official league.
This decision seems as logical because this young teams were often in different rosters from game to game which affects regularity and place of other teams on standings. SBF already decided to push the limit for junior teams to have U-19 players in their teams, there is no legitimate reason for second teams to play in second division. Serbian junior league is one of the most quality and organized European league for this age.
According to results in season 2012/13, KK Meridiana Novi Sad and KK Crnokosa Kosjeric earned place in Serbian A division while KK Spartak Subotica and KK Plana Velika Plana were relegated to third division.

Tony Parker makes good on vow to send Tim Duncan and Spurs back to NBA Finals - by David Edole

MEMPHIS, Tenn. They had stood in that losing locker room in Oklahoma City a year ago, and Tony Parker made Tim Duncan (211-F/C-76, college: Wake Forest) a promise that would carry these San Antonio Spurs all the way to Monday night. I'll get you back to the NBA Finals, Parker vowed. We aren't done. You aren't done.

It was late Monday, and Parker's eyes looked like they might well with tears as he recalled that moment. He had a 2013 Western Conference champions hat atop his head, having made good on his promise to send Duncan and the Spurs back to the Finals with a stirring 37-point performance in a 93-86 victory that completed a four-game sweep of the Memphis Grizzlies.

Duncan "remembered [the promise] and reminds me every time we passed a playoff round," Parker told Yahoo! Sports. "He said, 'We're going to ride you to the end.'

"Timmy means a lot to me. I learned so much from him. From the first day I arrived in San Antonio he's always had my back. He's a very good friend, very close to me on the court and off the court.

"Our first championship we were riding him. He was our franchise. I feel very blessed because now it's my turn to try to bring this team to the end. If I can do that for him, it would be unbelievable."

The Spurs are returning to the Finals for the first time in six years. They've won the championship in each of their four previous visits (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007), the last three with Parker as their starting point guard. Parker won his first title at 21 and his last at 25 when he was named the Finals MVP after the Spurs swept the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"In 2007, we won our third one in five years, and you think it's going to keep coming," Parker said. "And I'm 25, and six years go by and every year it gets tougher."

The Spurs were stuck in a six-year Finals drought that included last year's difficult loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the West finals. The Spurs led that series 2-0 before losing the next four games. Afterward, Parker told Duncan that he would get him back to the Finals before the end of his career. At 37 years old, Duncan will now get a shot at winning his fifth championship.

"He's amazing and he's evolved so much over the past couple of years," Duncan said of Parker. "To get back to this point with him at the helm, I'm just going to do everything I can to get these four games in and try to win four more for both of us. Obviously, he's carrying the load and he said he was going to get me back here. It's a lot of fun to be back here."

The Spurs find this Finals trip especially sweet, given that they have long been considered too old to challenge for another title. The season began with all eyes on the Los Angeles Lakers after they acquired Dwight Howard and Steve Nash to help Kobe Bryant in his championship chase. Kevin Durant and the Thunder were the defending West champions, and the Grizzlies and Los Angeles Clippers were also expected to pass the Spurs among the conference's elite. San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich even said that if he'd been a fan looking at the Spurs, he also probably would have thought their run was over.

After entering the playoffs with the West's No. 2 seed, the Spurs have gone 12-2, sweeping the Lakers, beating the Golden State Warriors in six games and now sweeping the Grizzlies. Suddenly, all that talk about Duncan, Parker and Manu Ginobili being too old has been replaced by respect.

"It already feels pretty good," Popovich said. "You don't expect that to happen maybe this late in the game with the same group. It's tough to do, to maintain something that long. But it just shows the character of those three guys and their ability to play with whomever else is brought around them. They deserve a lot of credit for that."

Duncan gave Spurs owner Peter Holt credit for sticking with himself, Parker and Ginobili for all these years and resisting change. Duncan joined the Spurs in 1997, Parker in 2001 and Ginobili in 2002. Popovich began coaching the Spurs the season before Duncan arrived. He and general manager R.C. Buford have worked in the team's front office since 1994.

"I know it's rare what we have," Duncan said. "It's rare for the confidence that they have in Pop and the front office. It's rare for us to be playing together for so long. There is a lot of rare air here."

The Spurs will now get some rare rest. The Finals won't start until June 6. In the meantime, the Spurs will wait to see if they'll face either the Miami Heat or Indiana Pacers.

"This was an incredibly physical series for our bigs," Duncan said. "So we're going to use the rest wisely and get our legs back underneath us and be as fresh as possible and as healthy as possible starting that first game."

With Parker helping lead the way, Duncan now has an opportunity to add another accomplishment to his already remarkable career. A fifth title would put Duncan in the same championship company as Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant and George Mikan.

"I'm excited to be here," Duncan said. "It's a really great feeling. I don't know how else to explain it. It's been a really long time. It's fun to know that I'm going back to the Finals."

Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- Venezuelan C Gregory Echenique (206-C-90) worked out in a private session for the Boston Celtics last weekends alongside several other candidates to be drafted in the upcoming 2013 NBA Draft, set to be held at Barclays Center in New York, next June 27th.

Boston tried out guards Vander Blue, Ricky Ledo, Peyton Siva and Erick Green, PF-C Jeff Withey and C Colton Iverson on Friday, and then worked out guards Pierre Jackson, Myck Kabongo, Phil Pressey and Shane Larking and C Gregory Echenique and Steven Adams on Saturday.

"First training session with the Celtics. Thank God it went well. I'm very glad. Now on the plane, going to Las Vegas to keep training" wrote Echenique in his official Twitter account.

His next stop will be working for the Minnesota Timberwolves on May 30th, according to Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press. Venezuela's Lider en Deportes also wrote that he'll have a chance to work out for the Washington Wizards next week.

While Boston has a first round pick (#16), Minnesota has two second-round picks and will try out Echenique as a potential sub for Nikola Pekovic, who's going to become a restricted free agent, as Walters wrote.

Echenique finished a successful NCAA career as a starter for the Creighton Blue Jays, becoming one of the most dominant players at the defensive end in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) and making it to two straight NCAA Tournaments.

His upside includes playing for Venezuela's Senior National Team since 2011 and facing several NBA and overseas stars in international tournaments, being coached by former NBA coach Eric Musselman.

Venezuelans Abroad - Windy Graterol has 9 double-doubles in Puerto Rico's BSN - by Francisco Vega

Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- Venezuelan PF-C Windi Graterol (204-C-86) has completed 9 double-doubles so far in Puerto Rico's BSN 2013 season as a foreign reinforcement player for Capitanes de Arecibo after 23 regular season games. His last one came in a victory over Atlticos de San German, 80-77, in which he scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked a couple of shots.

Graterol, part of Venezuela's Senior NT, has become a steady contributor for Arecibo's uprising team. He averages 10.0 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while his team is at fifth place with a 13-11 record.

The young talent skipped playing in Venezuela's LPB with Cocodrilos de Caracas to play in the BSN tournament for the first time in his career. His previous international career included stints in Colombia's Copa Invitacional.

Venezuelans Abroad - Greivis Vasquez underwent ankle surgery - by Francisco Vega

Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- Venezuelan NBA PG Greivis Vasquez (197-PG-87), of the New Orleans Pelicans, underwent a successful surgery to remove bone spurs of his right ankle in Van Nuys, California, performed by Dr. Richard Ferkel, of the Southern California Orthopedic Institute.

The recovery process could take from 12 to 16 weeks according to Dr. Ferkel, which could make Vasquez unavailable to play for Venezuela's Senior NT in the upcoming 2013 FIBA Americas World Cup Qualy Tournament, set to be played at El Poliedro Arena in Caracas, Venezuela, from August 30th till September 11th, and in which 10 countries will fight for 4 available spots for the 2014 FIBA World Cup, to be played in Spain.

Vasquez spoke to Venezuelan media through a teleconference. "It's tough because no one wanted to be on court more than me. I don't rule out the possibility of helping my team though I can't guarantee that I know I'm going to be fine. Rehab will take 12 to 16 weeks. The most important thing is my health and knowing how much days will it take for me to play again", he said.

"Of the three surgeries I've had so far, this time I'm in less pain and I'm stronger physically and mentally", he added. In the event he doesn't make it to the international tournament, he expressed confidence about his teammates being able to overcome his absence and gaining the main goal: advancing to the World Cup for the fourth time in Venezuelan basketball history (1990, 2002, 2006).

"We can't just think we're going to lose if I don't play. I'm not the only hero in the Venezuelan Senior NT. We've got talent and I have faith that things will come out the best way posible. Now Gregory Vargas has twice the chance he had. Carlos Cedeno has to play for the squad. Guys like Windy Graterol have to take this new responsibility".

Former NBA player Oscar Torres announced his retirement from Venezuela's Senior NT last year but several voices have expressed interest in him taking that back. "Oscar is a fundamental presence in the squad and a symbol of our basketball. I think he should be there. He can still think and make his own decision. He always ends things well when he takes the chances", said Vasquez.

The 26 year-old player, who averaged 13.9 points 4.3 rebounds and 9.0 assists in 78 games in his third NBA season and first full season as a starter. "My ankle had been bothering me all season and I played under a lot of pain".

Trotamundos hires Argentinian coach Silvio Santander, signs Jerome Meyinsse - by Francisco Vega

Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- The general management of Trotamundos de Carabobo decided to sign Argentinian head coach Silvio Jose Santander and move interim head coach Jesus Cordobes back to his first assistant coach job, prior to the beginning of Venezuela's LPB 2013 playoffs.

Cordobes filled in for Argentinian coach Guillermo Vecchio, who was fired by Trotamundos a couple of weeks ago. Cordobes managed to take Trotamundos to the playoffs at sixth place.

Santander coached Lanus to Argentina's LNB 2013 Finals but was edged by Regatas Corrientes. He has previous experience in Venezuela, serving a short stint for Panteras de Miranda in 2009 and coaching them into a 12-11 record. He's also worked in Mexico's LNBP.

GM Gustavo Garcia Saez also signed PF-C Jerome Meyinsse (206-C-88), who just won the championship in Argentina as a player of Regatas Corrientes. He averaged 12.9 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 43 games. He also played in Liga Sudamericana, averaging 11.3 points and 5.8 rebounds in 6 games.

Trotamundos did not take Venezuelan SF-PF Hector Romero to Puerto La Cruz for the first playoff game against Marinos. According to sources, the team wants to renegotiate the terms of the existing contract, saying that it has expired at the end of the regular season. Romero refuses to do so, quoting that his contract's terms can't be changed and he's signed until the end of the season, no matter which round it happens.
