The eighth annual Hoosiers Reunion Classic, a boys-girls doubleheader of the top senior high school players in the state, will be played there June 7.
Justin Meek, who has experience working with the Evansville Otters minor league baseball team, is leading the group that will present to the Hoosier Gym board on Wednesday. Though the gym was built in 1922, seats just 665 fans and does not have a full-size court, Meek said it is exactly what they are looking for.
It sort of adds to the oddity of it, Meek said. The CBL has expressed interest in having a team there I think we could bring in some fans because of the gym and get some good players from the area. The (Hoosier Gym) board seems excited; they are always looking for ways to bring in new people.
The Central Basketball League is in its first season this spring and has four teams: the Middle Tennessee Storm, Bowling Green (KY) Hornets, St. Louis Hawks and River City (Ill.) Panthers.

Meeks goal is to get the Knightstown franchise started for the fall season, if the board approves.

The Hoosier Gym was used by Knightstown High School until 1966, when a new facility was built. It sat empty for nearly two decades, until the producers from Hoosiers discovered it for the movie. Today it is owned by the city and used for many purposes, even weddings. A staff of volunteers offers free tours.
It continues to amaze me how many people we have come through here, Kilmer said. In the last two or three days we had several groups in who had been to the Indy 500 and wanted to come see it.

Jones' 38-point game gives him Player of the Week award - by Eurobasket News

28-year old power forward Kenny Jones (198-PF-84, agency: Dream Team Management) put on an extraordinary performance in the last round for Obregon and receives a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 33.
He had the game-high 38 points adding eight rebounds and four assists for Obregon as his team lost the game against Nogales (#3, 15-14) 89-101. Obregon maintains the 7th position in Mexican league. Obregon is rather a weak team placed in lower part in the standings. But it was their 18th lost game this season out of 29 games. Jones just recently signed at Obregon, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Kentucky State University graduate has very impressive stats this year. Jones is league's best scorer averaging so far 26.1ppg. Jones is in league's top in rebounds (7th best: 8.2rpg) and averages solid 64.4% FGP.

Second best performed player last round was Cheyne Gadson (192-G/F-80) of Nogales. He is American swingman in his first season at Nogales. In the last game Gadson recorded impressive double-double of 22 points and 11 assists. Of course Nogales cruised to a 101-89 relatively comfortable win over the lower-ranked Obregon (#7, 11-18). This victory allowed Nogales to move up to 3rd position in the standings. His team's 15-14 record is not bad at all. Gadson is one of the most experienced players at Nogales and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players.

Third place about best performers goes to swingman Rene Rougeau (198-G/F-86, agency: ProSportsCareers) of Cananea (#6). Rougeau scored 20 points and grabbed ten rebounds. Despite Rougeau's great performance Cananea lost 84-96 to slightly lower-ranked Guasave (#8, 11-18). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The chances of Cananea ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 17 games, recording just twelve victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Rougeau could help Cananea to bring them higher in the standings. Rougeau has a great season in Mexico. After 16 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in rebounds with 7.9rpg (8th best). He also has 1.8bpg and FGP: 55.9%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Devon Pearson (198-F-84) of Los Mochis - 26 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists
5. Kyle Austin (203-F-88) of Cananea - 23 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists
6. Marcus Morrison (198-G/F-84) of Tijuana - 25 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists
7. Jesus Lopez (205-F-83) of Hermosillo - 13 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists
8. Steffphon Pettigrew (195-F-89) of Guasave - 19 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists
9. Hector Hernandez (206-F-85) of Guaymas - 16 points and 14 rebounds
10. Kyle Spain (196-F-87) of Hermosillo - 20 points and 9 rebounds

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

Malone to work with Favors, Kanter - by Eurobasket News

Hall of Famer Karl Malone is returning to the Utah Jazz to help develop and mentor the team's two young big men. Jazz CEO Greg Miller said Wednesday that Malone will work with Derrick Favors (6'10''-F-91, college: Georgia Tech) and Enes Kanter (6'10''-C-92, college: Kentucky), as well as other players. The team says no specific schedule has been set for Malone's involvement. Miller said it will be a part-time, consulting type of arrangement with Malone working periodically with Favors and Kanter. The move brings back one of the franchise's greatest players at a time when the team is trying to build a contending team around Favors, Kanter and swingman Gordon Hayward (6'9''-G/F-90, agency: Priority Sports, college: Butler). The Jazz missed the playoffs this past season. ''With his success as a power forward in the NBA and the length of his career, he's obviously got a lot to teach,'' Miller said of Malone. ''We're fortunate that he's now willing to make himself and his expertise available to us.'' Favors averaged 9 points and 7 rebounds in his third season. Kanter averaged 7 points and 4 rebounds in his second season. Both are 21 years old, and both were No. 3 picks in their respective NBA drafts. A two-time NBA MVP, Malone played 18 seasons for Utah. He was a 14-time All-Star and ranks second on the NBA's career scoring list with 36,928 points. He teamed with Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton during the franchise's greatest seasons. ''It is great to have Karl as a resource for the team,'' Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said. ''He is one of the most talented big men to have ever played this game.'' The idea gained steam when Corbin came to Miller and asked to discuss the idea, Miller said. In addition to teaching the big men body positioning and other technical tricks that he learned and honed in his long career, Malone can help the two youngsters develop the mindset needed to be stars, Miller said. ''He's always one that has been very tough mentally,'' Miller said. ''And when he talks about how he does that, it's pretty fascinating to hear his methods.'' Miller declined to speculate about Malone taking on a bigger role in the future, but didn't rule it out either. ''We don't want to rush into anything,'' said Miller, while adding, ''Anything that's out there that we think will helps us win more games, we're open to pursuing it. If things were to unfold with Karl where it was good for him and good for the organization, we would certainly put that in that category.''

Cavaliers, Mavericks, Bobcats interested in DeMarcus Cousins - by Eurobasket News

The Cleveland Cavaliers, Charlotte Bobcats and Dallas Mavericks are three teams that have interest in trading for DeMarcus Cousins (6'11''-C/F-90, agency: SportsTalent, college: Kentucky) if the new ownership of the Sacramento Kings decide to part ways with their most valued asset, according to sources. The Bobcats are motivated to turnaround their long rebuilding situation and would surely be willing to build a package for Cousins around the No. 4 pick. Cousins would be 'Plan C' for the Mavericks if they are unable to sign either Chris Paul or Dwight Howard. Cousins is entering the final season of his contract before reaching restricted free agency.

Espoir sign Hakizimana - by Eurobasket News

Lionel Hakizimana (190-G-92) seen here in national team colours has joined champions Espoir BBC on a two-year contract. The New Times / File.

THE National basketball league champions, Espoir basketball club have signed point guard Lionel Hakizimana from rivals APR on a two year-deal.
The development was confirmed yesterday by Espoir head coach Jean Bahufite .
He said that Lionel Hakizimanas signing highlights the clubs vision of giving chance to young players as well as strengthening the club ahead of the 2013/14 season which gets underway in June.
According to Bahufite, recruiting Lionel Hakizimana is a good signal since the latter has gained vital experience which will help his team record many more successes especially if he blends well with other influential players such as Bievenu Ngandu, Aristide Mugabe and Olivier Shyaka.
We want to have a team comprised of both young and experienced players such that as time goes by, we can have a solid team which will be able to compete at the highest level.
Besides Lionel Hakizimana, Espoir has also signed promising youngster Fabrice Ruterana.
Its important to strengthen our team in preparation for next season. Lionel Hakizimana is a good player while Ruterana still has to work hard and needs time to prove his worth since he is still young. But they will all be good players in future, added Bahufite.
Lionel Hakizimana has previously played for CSK and guided them to the Memorial Gisembe tournament in 2011/12 season and APR last season.
In April, Bahufite made history by becoming the first coach to lead Espoir to the league title for the first time in eight years with an unbeaten record.
Unbeaten Espoir celebrated their fourth national basketball league regular season title after trouncing 30-Plus 133-30.
The Nyamirambo-based outfit won all their 17 league games to remain the only unbeaten team this season, and made 17 straight wins, setting a new record that was not held by any Rwandan league champion.
After clinching the league, they went on to win the Play-offs tournament, still unbeaten.
Espoir won all three games which helped them to win two titles in what has been an outstanding season for the oldest basketball club in Rwanda.
They won Game One 89-63 and Game Two 106-54 and Game Three 78-68 respectively.
The win helped Espoir to add two titles to the Zone Five club championship crown they won last year in Kampala after beating Burundis Urumuri in the final.

Cleveland Cavaliers hire Igor Kokoskov for offensive coordinator - by Tamara Ruzic

Igor Kokoskov is leaving the Phoenix Suns to join Mike Browns coaching staff with the Cavaliers, a league source confirmed Wednesday.
Kokoskov has been an NBA assistant for 13 years, including the past five with the Suns. He survived three coaches during those five years and was instrumental in assisting inexperienced interim coach Lindsey Hunter this season.Kokoskov is known as an innovative offensive guru, an influence Brown needed on his staff. Brown is defensive-oriented, and a major reason he was hired in the first place. He is viewed as a bright offensive mind and became Hunters lead assistant after Alvin Gentry was fired at midseason, handling the offense while Hunter ran the defense. Kokoskov became Hunters lead assistant. He often times drew up plays in huddles and helped run practices.
The players liked and respected him as a coach in Phoenix. He worked primarily with the wing players. He seemed to always be in the gym after practice working with the young players. He is credited with helping Suns guard Goran Dragics development.
Kokoskov previously worked for the Clippers and Pistons. In Detroit, he worked under Larry Brown, now the head coach at Southern Methodist, on the Pistons 2003-04 NBA championship team.
The Serbian native became the first full-time, foreign-born assistant coach in NBA history in 2000. He became a U.S. citizen in 2010.
He was also the head coach of the Georgian national team for five years, helping it qualify for two European Championships.
Kokoskov, 41, was a rising basketball star in Serbia, but severe injuries sustained in an automobile accident when he was 19 prematurely ended his career.

Beau Vallon Heat on fire - by Eurobasket News

On fire Beau Vallon Heat inflicted a second defeat on defending division one champions PLS Hawks at the weekend at Victoria Gymnasium, winning the tie 81-76.

Under the leadership of former Premium Cobras coach Guy Hall, impressive newcomers Beau Vallon Heat have been performing above all expectations this season. Already boasting wins against two of the biggest names in local basketball PLS Hawks and Premium Cobras the Heat find themselves atop the nine-team league standings, unbeaten after six games.
Probably not even coach Hall would have predicted such a good start for his team at the start of the season.
The Heat prevailed against the Hawks thanks to great resilience and hard work on the court. They had Jean-Paul Camille and Robert Lon scoring 17 points apiece to lead them to victory. The Hawks got 15 points from Rodney Loz while Nigerian Alao Solomon and Hendrick Denis had 14 points apiece.
PLS Hawks, meanwhile, have now suffered their second loss in five games their first defeat coming against third-placed Baya and they lie in sixth place with 8 points. Hawks did manage a win, however, on an 86-42 score against neighbours RC Dynamics.
Unbeaten in six games, the Heat have a maximum 12 points.
Dynamics are carrying the weight of the table after suffering their seventh straight loss. Besides losing to Hawks at the weekend, the Roche Caman-based team lost 59-84 against seventh-placed Drifters.
Both teams have seven points but Drifters boast a better head-to-head record against Dynamics and eighth-placed Angels who beat Mont Fleuri Dawgz 66-54 for their first win in six games.
Fourth-placed MBU Rockers took on fifth-placed Premium Cobras in a closely contested game. Cobras eventually ran out winners by a four-point margin 61-57.
The only match outside the mens first division that was played during the weekend was the mens second division match between Juniors and AAP Brothers. Anse Aux Pins-based AAP Brothers strolled to a 72-29 victory to maintain their push for promotion to the top division next year.

The scouts decsribe him following way: A powerful guard/forward, very good in the open court offense and in the 1-on-1; has an interesting shooting range, but loves to go oinside as his first option; a little discontinous, needs to improve his defense on the guards and his passing and decision making; some years of experience at a top level could make him a superstar.

Fire complete the back court with Mangakahia signing - by Eurobasket News

The Townsville McCafe Fire have secured their ninth signature for the upcoming WNBL season, with the commitment of upcoming Queenslander Tiana Mangakahia (165-PG-95).

Mangakahia a scholarship holder at the Basketball Australia National Centre of Excellence at the AIS in Canberra has represented Australia at the 2012 U17 World Championships and has most recently been selected to the U19 Australian Gems team to head to Europe next week in preparation for the World Championships in August.

A speedy point guard, Mangakahia displayed her skills and athleticism at the U20 Nationals in February where she dominated and led the stats in total steals, total free throws made, total assists, and free throw percentage. She was also in the top five for scoring and rebounding.

My development as a basketball player was really the key for me deciding on Townsville, said Mangakahia.

I know Flanny (Rachael Flanagan) will be able to teach me a lot about being a leading point guard in the league. I really respect her game; she will be a good mentor for me.

Im really looking forward to playing for the Fire, and having a go in the WNBL.

Fire Head Coach Chris Lucas said the club identified Mangakahia as a talent at the U18 National Championships two years ago and had been keeping a close eye on her progress since.

She is an exceptionally quick point guard and I have no doubt she will push Rachael and Micaela at trainings. She is an exciting player and will fit in well with our systems, said Lucas.

Mangakahia is the clubs ninth signing for the upcoming season. Suzy Batkovic, Micaela Cocks, Mia Newley, Kayla Standish, Steph Cumming, Rachael Flanagan, Alex Wilson and Olivia Thompson are all signed.

Canons, KCCA chase top spot - by Eurobasket News

TODAY evening there will be new Airtel National Basketball League leaders at the end of the two matches at YMCA, Wandegeya.
According to the National Basketball League rules, even the beaten side earns a point after the game, a thing which guarantees UCU Canons and KCCA Leopards spots at the top.
Both will go on top but having played a game more, but it may be short-lived if the initial table leaders win their games with a good margin by the end of the week.
UCU despite being without their star Sudi Ulanga who is out with a knock, welcome back Desmond Owili who returns from Kenya to boost the sides chances against Victoria University Heaters.
Shooting guard Cyrus Kiviri who has geled well with his new teammates after joining from Warriors in the off-season, promised a good show.
We have to sleep on the top of the table but with a sounding win. We are missing some players but the team is still strong and we will win with a good margin, vowed Kiviri who has been inspirational in the team's victories.
Meanwhile, in the ladies game, defending champions KCCA clash with struggling Nabisunsa.
Last years MVP Flavia Oketcho vowed to do what they do best; winning.
This league is all about us defending our title and we are going to guard it jealously. And now that we going on top, it will be a stepping stone for us to clinch the title, Oketcho stressed
