Platense tabs Sebastian Suarez - by Eurobasket News

Club Atletico Platense Florida (TNA) inked 26-year old Chilean international guard Sebastian Suarez (193-95kg-91, college: Portland State). He played recently at Penarol (LigaA), but left the team earlier this month. In 26 games he averaged 6.2ppg and 2.5rpg this season. TNA will be definitely a better match and he can see more playing time. The last season Suarez played at Deportivo Valdivia in Chilean Liga Nacional where in 33 games he had very impressive stats: 22.0ppg, 3.9rpg, 1.6apg and 1.2spg. He helped them to win the league title (twice) despite they ended the regular season at the second place (twice). A very good season in his career as he was selected to Latinbasket.com All-Chilean Liga Nacional 2nd Team and All-Domestic Players Team.
Suarez has been also a member of Chilean international program for some years. He has regularly played for Chilean senior team since 2012 and previously for U16 National Team between 2005 and 2006.
Suarez also represented Chile at the South American Championships in Caracas (Venezuela) last year.
He has played previously for two other Chilean teams: Osorno and Dep.Ancud.
Suarez attended Portland State until 2015 and it is his second season in pro basketball.

  BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Basketball Champions League Play-Offs Draws completed, trophy unveiled - by Eurobasket News

The draws of the first two phases of the Basketball Champions League Play-Offs were completed on Friday at FIBA's House of Basketball, in the presence of representatives from the 24 participating clubs. The 24 clubs were drawn for the Play-Off Qualifiers (7-8 and 21-22 February) and the Round of 16 (28 February-1 March and 7-8 March). These clubs have been ranked according to their final position within their respective groups during the Regular Season. 16 clubs were concerned with the Play-Off Qualifiers whose games will be played over two rounds (Feb 7-8 and Feb 21-22) on head-to-head format.
The Play-Off Qualifiers are as follows:
Aris vs. Strasbourg
Ventspils vs. Umana Reyer Venezia
Avtodor vs. EWE Baskets
Juventus vs. AEK
PAOK vs. Partizan
Maccabi Rishon LeZion vs. Ludwigsburg
Fraport Skyliners vs. Pinar Karsiyaka
Dinamo Sassari vs. CEZ Nymburk.

The Round of 16 draw has then been completed and concerned the teams ranked 1 to 8. Games will also be played over two rounds (Feb 28/Mar 1 and Mar 7/8) on head-to-head format. Please find the Round of 16 pairing in attached link. Amongst those in attendance were FIBA President Horacio Muratore, FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann and ULEB President Tomas Van Den Spiegel. They were joined by a number of recognisable basketball alumni, including Italy's Riccardo Pittis and Dino Radja from Croatia. Both were on stage to assist with the Draw. Friday's Draw Ceremony also witnessed the unveiling of the newly-designed Basketball Champions League Trophy, for what is the inaugural edition of the competition. This new trophy is a revolutionary design in its own right. Designed by Radiant Studios and crafted by Thomas Lyte, an elegantly shaped basketball net forms the focus of the trophy. The abstract design, fused with delicate gold elements, creates the effect of a crown. This symbolises the champions that will eventually lift the magnificent piece. The trophy stands 65cms high and is made from sterling silver with 24ct gold plated highlights. A total of 8kgs of sterling silver was used in the making of the trophy.

  CHILE

Benjamin Puckett (ex Importadora) joins Barreteros - by Eurobasket News

Barreteros de Zacatecas (LNBP) agreed terms with experienced 34-year old American center Benjamin Puckett (205-83kg-83, college: Clayton & State). He just played at Importadora in Ecuadorian National League.
The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others Puckett's team won Uruguayan Ascenso League Regular Season in 2016. He was also voted Latinbasket.com Uruguayan Ascenso League All-Imports Team in 2016.
Puckett is quite experienced player. His career allowed him to visit three different continents, while he played in nine different countries. Puckett tasted the life as pro basketball player in Asia, Latin America and of course North America. He has played previously professionally in Argentina (Union de Sunchales), Chile, Finland, Japan (Shimane Magic), Portugal, Uruguay (Aguada, Cordon, Trouville, Bigua and Nacional), Ecuador (Universidad Tecnologica Equinoc. Quito), IBA (Gwinett Majic) and Mexico (Caballeros de Culiacan).
Puckett attended Clayton & State until 2005 and it will be his twelfth (!!!) season as a professional player.
On Puckett: BJ is a complete basketball player who is able score both in the post and knock down the 3-point shot. He is a good passer, solid rebounder and a defender who uses his length to block shots. BJ is a player who wants the ball in his hands to make plays and is not afraid to take and make the clutch shot as he did many times for Clayton St.

Pero Antic selected the top FYR Macedonian playing abroad in last week's games - by Eurobasket Center

Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of FYR Macedonians who are currently playing abroad.

Pero Antic
Pero Antic
#1. This week's number one is an experienced former international power forward Pero Antic (211-82, agency: BeoBasket, currently plays in Turkey). Antic led Fenerbahce to a victory against the league outsider TED Kolejliler (0-15) 89-76 in the Turkish BSL last Saturday. He scored 12 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Fenerbahce Istanbul (13-1) is placed first in the BSL. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. This season Antic averages: 9.2ppg, 3.2rpg, 2FGP: 56.3%(9-16), 3FGP: 47.4%(18-38) and FT: 64.7%. He has a dual citizenship: FYR Macedonian and Bulgarian. Antic played for the FYR Macedonian senior national team two years ago.

Romeo Travis
Romeo Travis
#2. Second place goes to an international power forward Romeo Travis (201-84, college: Akron, currently plays in France). He led Strasbourg IG to a victory over the 13th-ranked Chalons-Reims (7-10) crushing them 106-78 in the French ProA on Monday night. Travis was MVP of the game. He scored 20 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists in a mere 18 minutes. Strasbourg IG (9-8) is placed ninth in the ProA. This year Travis' overall stats are: 8.5ppg, 5.7rpg, 2.1apg, 2FGP: 48.5%, 3FGP: 22.2% and FT: 76.5% in 10 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Travis is in the roster of the FYR Macedonian senior national team. Strangely he has never played in FYR Macedonia.

Richard Hendrix
Richard Hendrix
#3. The FYR Macedonian player who performed third best last week abroad was former international power forward Richard Hendrix (203-86, agency: Stanislav Ryzhov, college: Alabama, currently plays in EuroCup). Hendrix was the major contributor in a Gran Canaria's victory against the closely-ranked UCAM Murcia (1-3) 83-67 in the Eurocup in Wednesday night's game. He recorded 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds (made all of his six free throws). It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Herbalife Gran Canaria (2-2) is placed second in the Eurocup. There are only two games left until the end of the Eurocup Second Stage. So now every game will be critical. It's Hendrix's first season with the team. Hendrix's total stats this year are: 7.8ppg, 3.6rpg, 1.3apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 60.7%(37-61) and FT: 69.0%. He is a naturalized American. Despite Hendrix played previously for the USA U18 national team, he played also for the FYR Macedonian national team in 2015. Apparently Hendrix has never played in FYR Macedonia.

He cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. Dimitrijevic scored only 2 points in 3 minutes on the court. Joventut lost in an overtime 88-94 in Madrid to the much higher-ranked (#9) Baloncesto Fuenlabrada. It was Joventut's third consecutive loss in a row. Dimitrijevic has been at the team for five years. This season he averages just 1.8ppg in four games. Dimitrijevic used to play for the FYR Macedonian national team two years ago.

Oliver Dvojakovski

KK Simmons (Licher Basket Baeren) Nobody Really Cares If I Did This Or That But We All Care If Lich Wins - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber

K.K. Simmons (191-G-93, college: Pikeville) is a 23 year old 190cm combo guard from Marietta, Georgia that is playing his first professional season with German Pro B team Licher Basket Baeren. He played at three schools with NC-Wilmington (NCAA), Kent St. (NCAA) and Pikeville (NAIA). Last season he finished his college basketball career with Pikeville (NAIA) playing 31 games and averaging 16.4ppg, 1.9rpg, 2.6apg, FGP: 46.1%, 3PT: 39.2%, FT: 78.5%. Simmons is an amazing shooter and shot 48% from outside in his junior season at Pikeville, but can also mix it up getting to the hole. In his first season with Pikeville, he played 25 games averaging 20.8ppg, 2.2rpg, 2.0apg, 1.1spg, FGP: 45.3%, 3PT: 48.9%, FT: 78.4%. He spoke to eurobasket after the massive 85-84 win against Nordlingen.

KK thanks for talking to eurobasket.com. Did you make any 2017 New Years resolutions or are you more the type of guy that doesn't waste his time with that?

My New Years resolution for 2017 is to become a better person all around. That means being a better son, better sibling, better boyfriend, better teammate, better friend, etc. Just want to try to continue growing day by day.

Congrats on the huge 85-84 win. How good did it feel to get back on the winning track after the loss in Frankfurt?

Getting a win always feels good, especially after the tough past couple of weeks we've had. Coming into the game, we realized that our backs were against the wall & that we had to execute on both ends of the floor in order to come out with a victory.

The Giants Nordlingen had the 49-39 lead at halftime. What was giving Lich the biggest problems on defense trying to contain their scoring?

Our defense actually was better than it has been the last couple of games. Our help side defense & defensive rotations were on point, but giving credit to the Giants, they hit a lot of tough shots. We knew coming into the second half that they wouldn't shoot as good as they did in the first half. Well, at least we hoped that they didn't.

What adjustments did Lich want to make in the second half and what was key for the 27 points scoring attack in the third quarter?

On the defensive end, we wanted to become more physical by playing hard without fouling. On the offensive end, we wanted to play fast & keep attacking. Our coach made a great choice by playing a smaller lineup, with 4 guards & 1 big. This worked really well for us.

What an amazing fourth quarter. Nordlingen was up by seven points and Lich stormed back to tie the game only to allow Nordlingen to get the lead back and lead 84-78 with 1.54 minutes to go. How was the team feeling at this point? How much did good conditioning factor into being able to come back one more time?

We felt like we were in a great position. We've been in close games the entire season, so we knew what we had to do to remain in striking distance. Conditioning played a great factor in being able to close the gap again. We had a really good week of practices leading up to the game.

The Licher Basket Baeren closed out the game with a 7-0 run and won with the buzzer beater of Lamar Mallory. Was this the most heart and character the team has shown all season long?

Yes, I guess you could say that. Like I said before, we've been in close games with pretty much every team all season. In the end, we always come up short by maybe a possession here & there. We've shown a lot of heart & character at several points this season, but Saturday's game was by far the most we've shown, especially under the last 2 minutes of the game.

Take us through your buzzer beater. Was this a designed play or off a broken play?

Yes, it was a designed play. It became broken at some point but we still executed something that ended up winning the game for us.

How many buzzer beaters have you had in your career and how proud were you that your teammate accomplished this?

I've had countless amounts of buzzer beaters in my career. I've played at the highest levels of competition at all points in my life, from high school to AAU to college & now to professional basketball. I have played in many close games, some coming down to the last few possessions. I've made many buzzer beater shots but I've also been on the opposite end of a buzzer beater. I was extremely proud. It was a very intense moment, & to come out with a win on a clutch play like that was a great feeling.

Lich had been on a 4 game losing streak and in three of the four loses, the club lost tight games. Did the team have a crunch-time problem until the win in Nordlingen?

Yes. I would say so. As a leader, I've always said we've had a problem with closing out games when it comes to crunch time. Getting this win in a close-game situation like we did was a huge step for us.

How excited are you for the second half of the season as Lich is involved in a real playoff fight. Do you feel like the team hasn't reached it's fullest potential yet?

I'm really excited for this second half of the season. A lot of teams are adding new players to their rosters, & the league is becoming a lot tougher on this stretch as we begin to close the regular season out. No, I don't feel that we've reached our fullest potential yet, which is a good thing. We need to continue getting better each day.

The team scores 85 points per game, but also allows 85 points per game. It will be benficial to carve down some of the points per game. In what areas does the team still need to improve and does it have the potential to keep teams between 70-80 points?

Offense isn't our problem. We have to continue getting better on the defensive end. Yes, we have the potential to keep teams between 70-80 points, but it's up to us to string along key stops in games to be able to make that happen.

How vital has the pick up of Blake Justice been. He says that he could be the glue guy. What do you appreciate most about his game?

Blake becoming a part of our family has been very key for us. He definitely can be the glue guy that brings us more together as we get into a tougher part of our season. I appreciate everything that he brings to the table: his ability to score, his ability to lead on & off the court, & just his overall presence is much needed for our basketball family.

Lamar Mallory is having a great second season. Where do you compare him to the other top players in the Pro B south like Kerry Carter or Aaron Nelson? Do you see him heightening his game even more in the second half?

To me, there is no comparing when it comes to Lamar. He plays his heart out every second of every game. He's one of those guys you would hate to play against. I'm very thankful to have him by my side when we step on the court. I know I can count on him to be ready for war. Yes, I could see him heightening his game even more in this second half of the season. He always rises to the occasion & does what he has to do to put us in a position to win games.

Your having a great rookie season in the German Pro B. Consistency is your middle name. How strange is reading your stat line and seeing 4 points in a 20 point win against Frankfurt?

Honestly, I don't even think about that game anymore. It happened so long ago & like you said we won by 20 points. It doesn't matter if I score 4 points or 40 points, a win is a win. However many points I score is not what I define my game on. I bring so many other things to the table.

You are tearing up the league and are very consistent. How content have you been with your game and on what things do you need to improve on most?

I've been content with my game, but I also feel like I have a lot of room to improve. I feel like I can improve on my leadership skills & my off ball defense more. Becoming more of a floor general is also what I want to improve on.

How difficult is it in general to improve when one is tearing up the league. Besides winning on what aspects will you concentrate most in the second half of the season to continue to help improve your game?

Honestly, it's not that difficult to improve at this point. At the end of the day it's not all about me. I have a lot of things to work on but winning is the most important thing to me & my teammates. None of us on the team really care if KK Simmons did this or that; we all care if Lich wins & the way we win.

What was your impression of Fraport Skyliner Junior Isaac Bonga? He has been projected by some of being a 2018 NBA first round pick.

I think that Isaac is a good player that has a lot of potential to be something special. I talked to him after the game about it; I told him to keep working hard & good things will come his way. It will be nice to see him in the NBA one day. He has all the tools to make it happen.

Klay Thompson recently hit 60 points in 29 minutes touching the ball for only 90 seconds. Where does this performance rank with you?

That game was a legendary one for Klay. I was amazed by this. It was a really good performance, but I've watched countless NBA games that have had just as great things happen in them. I would've rank it in my top memorable moments but it's not too far off.

One always talks about Lebron and Curry, but one has to mention Russell Westbrook. He is averaging triple double stats at the moment. Is he stat wise the best player in the world right now?

Hands down, stat-wise, he's the best player in the world right now. Averaging triple-doubles is almost humanly impossible & almost unheard of. It hasn't been done since the Big O. Russell Westbrook is a monster.

What was the last movie that you saw?

We're the Millers. It's one of the funniest movies of all time.

Thanks KK for the chat.

Best players of Iranian Superleague round 15 - by Eurobasket News

American J.P. Prince (203-G/F-87) had a very impressive game in the last round for Azad and that's him to receive a Asia-basket.com Player of the Week award for round 15.
The 29-year old swingman had the game-high 26 points adding seven rebounds for Azad in his team's victory, helping them to edge out Tabriz (#4, 9-6) 63-62. The game was between two of the league's top four teams. Azad maintains the 3rd position in Iranian Superleague. They would have been even better if they hadn't lost a few games earlier this season. Azad will need more victories to improve their 10-5 record. In the team's last game Prince had a remarkable 80.0% from 2-point range. He turned to be Azad's top player in his first season with the team. University of Tennessee graduate has very impressive stats this year. Prince is in league's top in points (5th best: 19.3ppg), assists (6th best: 3.6apg) and averages solid 2.3spg and 56.3% FGP.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 32-year old Croatian Filip Toncinic (212-C/F-84) of Gorgan. Toncinic impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Of course he led Gorgan to another comfortable win outscoring Shiraz a.s Pipe (#10, 0-15) 84-60. The game was between two teams which are definitely not main contenders for the title. Gorgan keeps 9th position. 12 lost games are too many comparing to just three victories Gorgan managed to get this year. Toncinic is a newcomer at Gorgan and it seems he did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 18.6ppg (#7). He also registered 8.8 boards per game.

The third best performed player last round was American Quinton Hosley (201-F-84) of Arak (#6). Hosley showcased his all-around game by recording 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the last round. Despite Hosley's great performance Arak lost 79-98 to slightly lower-ranked Kashan (#7, 7-8). But his team cannot count on just a single player as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing Arak needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 8 victories and 7 lost games. Hosley has a great season in Iran. After 13 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 18.7ppg (6th best) and assists with 3.6apg (5th best). He also has 3.1spg and FGP: 59.3%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Ivan Koljevic (187-PG-84) of Kashan - 22 points, 6 rebounds and 10 assists
5. Zvonko Buljan (206-C-87) of Kashan - 25 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists
6. Arsalan Kazemi (200-SF-90) of Army - 11 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists
7. Joseph Jones (206-C/F-86) of Azad - 21 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists
8. Daequan Cook (195-G-87) of Chemidor - 28 points and 3 rebounds
9. Saeed Davarpanah (190-G/F-87) of Naft Abadan - 21 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists
10. Saman Taherpour (203-PF-91) of Shiraz a.s Pipe - 20 points and 12 rebounds

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

Can Thunder make it 2 Cups in a Row or can Killester Really celebrate 50th - by Patrick Maher

Hula Hoops National Cup finals preview

The last weekend of January is rolling around and that can only mean one thing - it's Hula Hoops National Cup basketball finals time!
Eleven thrilling finals will tip off this coming weekend at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght from Friday evening (January 27th) when the Wheelchair Basketball Final between Fr Mathews and NI Knights gets proceedings underway at 6pm. The games will run out across the remainder of the weekend, with some very interesting match ups in store.
The Men's National Cup final tees up a much-anticipated clash between Pyrobel Killester and Griffith Swords Thunder. The last time these two sides met in the Men's Super League was on New Year's Eve, with Swords coming from behind in the fourth quarter to power through and win by 21 points in the end.
Swords are in their second Cup final in-a-row, having been defeated at the death by Templeogue last year and will be relishing the challenge that this weekend brings. Isaac Westbrooks will be leading the charge from the point, but will need support from key players Jose Maria Gil Narbon, Justin Goldsborough, Kevin Lacey and Alex Dolenko to try and overcome an extremely determined Killester.

Killester meanwhile are looking forward to being back on one of the biggest stages in Irish basketball and will be hoping they can put the ultimate crown on their club's 50th anniversary celebrations this year when they line out on Saturday night. They will be looking to players such as Jermaine Turner, Cian Nihill, Peder Madsen and Ciaran Roe to bring their experience and skill to the fore on the night.
The Women's National Cup final is yet another interesting match up, as reigning Cup champions Ambassador UCC Glanmire prepare to defend their title and successfully complete their bid to win four Cup titles in-a-row (and their seventh overall). Glanmire have been dominating the women's Cup basketball scene in recent years, and Grainne Dwyer, Aine McKenna and Claire Rockall will prove key for them this Sunday evening if they are to overcome Courtyard Liffey Celtics.
Liffey Celtics are preparing for their first Cup final at this level and are relishing the underdog tag and have no fear going into this game as, with nothing to lose, they will be aiming to close down Dwyer, McKenna and Chantell Alford and will look to the impressive Jazmen Boone, Karen Mealey, Emma O'Connor and Ailbhe O'Connor to succeed in this task.

Some interesting games await in the Men's Presidents Cup and Senior Women's Cup too, as BFG Neptune - who have three finals to contest this weekend - will hope to have enough fire power to overcome Shane O'Meara's charges at Ej Sligo All-Stars. Marble City Hawks meanwhile will need Kelly O'Hallahan and Katie Fox to be on form if they are to overcome Ulster Rockets on Sunday afternoon in the Women's final.
There are a number of ones to watch in the Under 18 and Under 20 finals as well, with talented young stars including Ali Cleary and Ash McCann of Pyrobel Killester, Anna Brennan, Nicole Clancy, Rachel Huijsdens, Maeve O'Seaghdha, Bronagh Power Cassidy and Elizabeth Black (DCU Mercy) and Annaliese Murphy, Louise Scannell and Jayne Fitzgerald (Ambassador UCC Glanmire) sure to make their mark. In the Men's underage finals, KUBS and Neptune face off against each other at both age groups, and Eoin McCann, Kevin Hughes, Marcus Black and Shane McCann (KUBS), Adam Drummond, Cian Heaphy, Adam Heaphy, David Murray and Sean Jenkins (BFG Neptune) will make a big impression on the games.
Some interesting match ups also await in the Men's and Women's NICC finals, with a very experienced Blue Demons facing off to UCD Marian, while the clash of Michelle Aspell and Michelle Fahey in the Women's NICC final as Limerick Celtics and Maree BC go head-to-head will be one to watch. Session 3 tickets (Saturday evening) are now sold out, with Session 4 almost sold out as of 3pm on Thursday afternoon. Tickets for the games are available at www.eventbrite.ie.

Division 2 - Beirut Club Easily Defeat Feytroun - by Eurobasket News

For the second time in a row this season, Beirut Basketball Club found no difficulty at all overcoming their opponents. This time, they defeated Feytroun with a final score of 84-43.
After taking the lead in the first quarter 14-22, Beirut never let it go and took an even larger lead to end the game with a 41 points difference. The club is one of the heavy contenders for the division 2 title and their intents have been made clear since they signed their roster. Their goal is surely not limited to winning the second division only as they are looking to be the dark horse in the first division, should they be promoted.

Puckett is quite experienced player. His career allowed him to visit three different continents, while he played in nine different countries. He has played previously professionally in Argentina (Union de Sunchales), Chile, Finland, Japan (Shimane Magic), Portugal, Uruguay (Aguada, Cordon, Trouville, Bigua and Nacional), Ecuador (Universidad Tecnologica Equinoc.
