EA7 Armani target JaJuan Johnson - by Eurobasket News

Defending champion EA7 Emporio Armani Milano (Serie A) is considering to add to their roster 28-year old American power forward JaJuan Johnson (208-100kg-89, college: Purdue) who played last time at Acqua Vitasnella Cantu. In 30 Serie A games in Italy he recorded very impressive stats: 19.0ppg, 7.2rpg, 1.3apg, 1.3spg and 1.4bpg last season.
The previous (15-16) season Johnson played at Krasny Oktyabr in Russian league where in 6 Eurocup games he averaged remarkable 18.0ppg and 8.2rpg (#4 in the league). Johnson also played 9 games in VTB United League where he had high stats: 19.8ppg, 7.1rpg and 1.8bpg.
In 2011 he was drafted by New Jersey Nets (NBA) in first round (27th overall). The former Purdue University staris in his seventh season in pro basketball.
The list of the past achievements is quite long as among others he won NBA Pro Summer League in Utah championship title in 2015. Johnson was selected to Italian SerieA All-Star Game in 2016.
He is quite experienced player. Johnson's career allowed him to visit three different continents, while he played in five different countries. Johnson tasted the life as pro basketball player in Europe, Asia and of course North America. He has played previously professionally in China (Changsha Bank), Turkey (Besiktas), NBA (Houston Rockets) and D-League (Salt Lake City Stars, Fort Wayne Mad Ants and Canton Charge).
On Johnson: (by Tyler Ingle for NBADraft.net in 2011)
A long, tall forward with good scoring instincts ... Is a legit 6'10" in shoes with a long 7'2" wingspan ... Has very impressive leaping ability with unusual explosiveness for a big man. Doesn't appear to have the frame that can support much more weight in the future ... Gets pushed around when trying to defend players in the post ... Offensively he prefers to play in the post, but there are questions about whether this will translate to the next level where just about every power forward will be bigger than he is

Terence Smith (I Brought A Lot To The Table Even In Games I Wasn't Scoring) - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber

Terence Smith (193-G-91, college: Mississippi) is a 25 year old 191cm guard from Russellville, Alabama that completed his rookie season in Germany with the Giants Nordlingen averaging 17,6ppg, 5,2rpg and 3,8apg. He started his basketball career with Tenn-Martin (NCAA) in 2010 playing 84 NCAA games in three seasons averaging double figures in scoring each season with his junior year being his most productive where he averaged 14.8ppg, 3.6rpg, 2.8apg, FGP: 42.4%, 3PT: 44.4%, FT: 82.1%. He played his last year of school with Mississippi (NCAA) playing 33 games averaging 4.0ppg, 1.2rpg, 1.7apg. He spoke to eurobasket at the conclusion of the 2016-2017 season.

Terence thanks for talking to eurobasket.com. You have completed your rookie season with the Giants Nordlingen which ended in the team moving down to the Regionaliga. Was the last close loss to the Uni-Riesen Leipzig a game you should have won synonymous of how your season went?

We lost a lot of close games this season, but I like the way our team continued to fight till the end.

In our last interview at the end of the regular season you stated this in terms of the team wanting to stay in the league after the playdowns. 'We will leave it all on the court and try our best to end the season on a good note'. Nordlingen had a 2-4 record in the playdowns. Did the team leave on the floor in the last 6 games?

Yes, I felt that we started to play better towards the end of the season and ended up splitting with the teams in the playdowns.

Nordlingen went into the playdowns playing their best basketball, but had a poor playdown record of 2-4. Did the fact that you were playing against big odds to stay in the league mentally effect the team?

A lot of it was out of our control so we were just focused on us.

Lich had your number all season long. Why do you think was Nordlingen unable to figure them out this season?

We ended up winning the last one versus them at home, but the other games their role players stepped up and had big games.

Nordlingen lost two games by one point, but had some good defensive games, but still went 2-4 in the playdowns. What do you feel was most crucial in the playdowns for Nordlingen not being able to advance?

Some games we waited until we were down and then started to play with more energy afterwards.

What was your season summary with the Giants Nordlingen. I stated all along that you were a team a lot better than their record showed.

I like how our team didn't quit during the process of losing those close games.

Team captain and the heart and soul of the team German Fabian Brutting retired. How did you experience your rookie season with the German. What did you gain from him that you will never forget?

There was a big difference when Fabi came back, and a lot easier with him on the court. He helped keep the team composed when needed. I really appreciated his joy and passion for the game.

American Adrien Coleman came in midway through and had a decent season. You stated in our last interview that he is a player that 'Adrien Coleman was an important pick up for us because he can get out and finish in transition. Also, I appreciate that he can defend multiple positions and he has a great understanding of the game of basketball'. How do you feel did his game progress in the few months that you were teammates?

He started to add to his game and knock down a couple of jump shots late into the season.

You had a great rookie season averaging 17,7ppg, 6,0rpg and 4,2apg and scored in double figures in all 28 games that you played. What was your personal season highlight? Was it your triple double despite losing to Lich

I'd have to say the triple double in the win versus Lich. Since, I was close to getting one a couple times throughout the season.

How content were you in general with your rookie season? Did your consistency in your own game help ease the losing?

That didn't help ease the losing. I just got in the gym more throughout the season to help improve my game.

How do you feel did your game develop as a rookie. Do you feel like you were able to make strides on the mental side simply because Nordlingen would totally have been lost without your production knowing you had to be consistent every night.

I just had to find ways to be better and to help my team compete each and every night.

A good guard is a dime a dozen in the pro B, but great guards are more rare. Do you feel that you were a great Pro B guard?

Yes, I wasn't too bad. I brought a lot to the table even in games I wasn't scoring.

What is the next step for Terence Smith? You had a very potent Pro B season. Do you feel that you are ready for the next step with possibly the German Pro A?

I just have to continue to work and improve my game and be ready for the next step at any level.

In the last interview you stated that you have to improve getting to the free throw line and making them. Is this your first priority this summer when you get back in the gym?

Yes, I won't have a choice since my mom tends to give me a hard time about those missed free throws.

What are your summer plans? Will you just chill with family and get back in the gym soon or try to do some traveling this summer?

For the most part, my family is usually in the gym. I will be mainly working on my game and coaching during the summer.

Devin Booker recently hit the Boston Celtics with 70 points. Did it surprise you that he reached this feat before other big time NBA players?

Not really, he has an old school and smooth game.

Where do you rank Isaiah Thomas now with the top NBA point guards and can he still help them make a run despite the death of his sister?

His performance was good this season to put him with the top NBA point guards. However, I couldn't go against D Wade and the Bulls in the 1st round.

How special was the run of South Carolina at the 2017 NCAA tournament? Do you feel like this was the story of March Madness 2017?

South Carolina men had a special run this year, but the story of March Madness was Miss State on the women's side.

Is Lonzo Ball the real thing? Do you feel like he will be able to develop further despite the antics of his father on social media?

If the kid loves the game, he will have no problem making an impact in the NBA with the potential he has.

There has been criticism of Russell Westbrook to be focusing more on rebounding to help inflate his stats and possibilities of getting triple doubles instead of focusing on his defensive assignments. Do you feel that this is a fair assessment to the player Russell Westbrook?

It's not easy to average a triple double throughout the entire NBA season. You just have to give credit where credit is due.

Thanks Terence for the chat.

KFC Bombers are the 2017 GBA Champs - by Eurobasket News

On Tuesday night for game three of the Guam Basketball Association Season Three Finals, the KFC Bombers defeated the regular season's best, MVP Stars 103-96 at the UOG Calvo Field House. The Bombers finished the regular season 9-3 to the MVP Stars 12-0. Each team swept their opponents in the semis and split the first two against each other. KFC Guam President Frank Cruz said it was an exciting final and that he's happy to have built an association with the Bombers, who for many years were known as the team from Andersen. 'This is the third season and we've sponsored the Bombers for two seasons. KFC as a corporate group wanted to connect with the armed forces and we wanted to reach out and connect through sports,' said Cruz, 'I personally am a fan of basketball and I've known Gerrard Barnes, the Bombers coach, for years so this was a good opportunity for us.' Last year, the Bombers had lost a key player and did not make it to the finals. This year, MVP ran an undefeated season and only lost to the Bombers twice in the finals. 'The Bombers peaked at the right time. Even as MVP did not have key player Joe Blas, the third game was the best game of the three with lots of back and forth in the third quarter,' said Cruz, 'but it was a three-point shot by Tony Moses that put the Bombers out of reach.' The Bombers are the only military team out of the seven teams. All are sponsored by local businesses except for the varsity team from the University of Guam. "We will continue to support the Bombers and we also want them to network with the local teams and the GBA is the NBA equivalent for Guam,' said Cruz, 'and I want to thank the GBC who runs the league and for putting up the league, which the island has been missing. Without them, the league wouldn't be where it is today.' In game one of the finals the Bombers upset MVP, 113-94. And in game two MVP game back to dominate with a 102-90 win over the Bombers.

Offensively he prefers to play in the post, but there are questions about whether this will translate to the next level where just about every power forward will be bigger than he is
.

Worth to mention Scharer played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball.

The second best player in last round's games was James Matinez of Dunkin' Raptors. Matinez had a very good evening with 40 points, 2 rebounds and 6 assists. Of course Dunkin' Raptors cruised to a 99-87 relatively comfortable win over OSK (#8, 0-6). Dunkin' Raptors' 7th position in the standings has not changed. 5 lost games are too many comparing to just one victory Dunkin' Raptors managed to get this year. Matinez is one of the most experienced players at Dunkin' Raptors and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 25.0ppg (#2). He also recorded 4.3 assists per game.

Third on the list of top players last round was American Frederick Jones of Mad Goat (#5). Jones got into 30-points club by scoring 43 points in the last round. He went also for nine rebounds and five assists. Despite Jones' great performance Mad Goat lost 89-103 to Mono Thew (4-2). But his team cannot count on just a single shooter as he also needs help of the other teammates. The last thing Mad Goat needs is to lose another game like this one. They lose more and more distance to the top teams. Their record is 4 victories and 2 lost games. Jones has a great season in Thailand. After only 6 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 25.5ppg (best scorer). He also has 2.2spg and FGP: 54.2%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Kevin Hill (201-F-92) of OSK - 22 points, 22 rebounds and 2 assists
5. Michael Singletary (198-F-88) of Mono Vampire - 29 points and 12 rebounds
6. Jason Brickman (181-PG-91) of Mono Vampire - 29 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists
7. Raffy Reyes (178-PG-87) of OSK - 28 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists
8. Jeff Dumelod) of TGE - 28 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists

10. Anthony McClain (213-C-88) of Mono Thew - 10 points, 20 rebounds and 2 assists

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

Up North - welcome the champions of Sweden! - by Eurobasket News

Last week we set our sights as far west as Apeldoorn, Netherlands and as far south as Samsun, Turkey. New horizons are opening also up north - we welcome the Champions of Sweden Lulea Basket! Lulea is the capital of Swedish basketball. Men's team BC Lulea recently took the title after beating the previous champs Sodertalje Kings 4-1. Women's side also confirmed expectations, overcoming the opponents from the neighbour city of Umea 3-1. What makes Lulea so special? The first answer is its ever growing fan base. For example, Lulea Basket has more followers on Facebook (6118) than current EEWBL champs Good Angels Kosice (5191) and AZS UMCS Lublin (5563). The second thing is character. The regular season favorites - Udominate Basket - completed a perfect 27-0 season. It didn't scared the contenders from Lulea. They dominated the first Finals game on the road and secured the home advantage the rest of the way. Lulea has a dynasty now. The club has won the last four Swedish championships (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017). At first, Lulea dethroned the previous champions from Norrkoping and then launched the great Northern derby with Umea. Like Rihanna said - this is what I came for. We need more of this north, south, east, west, wherever.

Williams' game is described as: (By former Golden State Warrior - Tony Martin (1984-1985))
Emmensely athletic and finesse shooting guard with some experience at the point guard position. When she gets the rebound she likes to push the ball up the court. She plays bigger than she is because of her athleticism. Getting to the rim and pulling up off the dribble and off the screen are her specialties. She will take her defender one on one with no hesitation. She can shoot the three and when she gets locked in she has great three point range, otherwise can be streaky from three point range. She has good court vision and can keep her opponent in front of her. I would like her to work on her ball handling a little more. When this improves will be unstoppable

Ogwumike and Parker lead Sparks to 90-75 win over Liberty - by Eurobasket News

Candace Parker (6'4''-C/F-86, college: Tennessee) and the Los Angeles Sparks capped off a disappointing road trip with a strong win over New York. Parker scored 20 points and Nneka Ogwumike (6'3''-F-90, college: Stanford) led the Sparks with 22 in a 90-75 victory over the Liberty on Tuesday night. "We needed a win on this trip and this was the way to get it," Parker said. "We're a work in progress. We let two slip away and I think our defense kind of got back on track in this game." The defending champion Sparks blew a 14-point lead to Indiana in the opener of the three-game swing and then lost a close one in Atlanta. "It was bigger than just winning on the road or winning off a three-game road trip," Ogwumike said. "We were re-searching for our identity and hit the nail on the head tonight. Going into practices is perfect. We're in a great situation to look at this film and bring it to practice." The Sparks (3-2) led 66-64 after three quarters and scored the first 11 points of the fourth period to take command. The loss ruined a strong effort from Tina Charles (6'4''-C-88, college: Connecticut), who had 25 points to lead New York (2-3). "We need to trust each other out there and have each other's back defensively," Charles said. "We know how to start games obviously, we did great in the first half. We just have to do it for 40 minutes, we can't pick and choose." Epiphanny Prince (5'9''-G-88, college: Rutgers) added 21 for the Liberty in her final game before she heads to play in the EuroBasket tournament next month. New York trailed 63-56 late in the third quarter before Prince sparked a 8-0 run with six points and two steals to give the Liberty a 64-63 lead. Ogwumike had a three-point play with 22 seconds left in the third quarter and the Sparks never looked back. Charles scored the first 11 points for New York and had 14 in the opening quarter, making six of seven shots. New York's star got into foul trouble though and picked up her third foul with just under 3 minutes left in the half. New York led 38-36 at the break. Los Angeles was still missing guard Odyssey Sims, who sprained her left ankle against Washington on May 19. She missed the entire road trip. Coach Brian Agler said that Sims should start practicing later this week when the Sparks return home.
