Trilogy Wins the First Big3 Basketball Championship - by Eurobasket News

Putting together a great team is difficult in any sport, but at least there are blueprints for established leagues. Acquire great players, emphasize the fundamentals, maybe try to copy a championship team from the past. But what about a brand new league, playing a variation on a standard sport? The Big3 started in June as a three-on-three basketball league of eight traveling teams filled with former N.B.A. players and governed by some quirky rules. Its coaches and athletes had to learn how to create a winner from scratch. Trilogy, which capped an 8-0 regular season with a 51-46 win over the Three-Headed Monsters in the final here on Saturday, found the best answers. How was this team assembled? The captains Kenyon Martin (206-F-77, college: Cincinnati) and Al Harrington (206-F-80), big men who played a combined 33 seasons in the N.B.A., were assigned to Trilogy by the league. They worked with Coach Rick Mahorn to choose the remaining three players through the draft. They were lucky enough to get the No. 1 overall pick. History has shown that does not guarantee success, and their choice of shooting guard Rashad McCants (193-SG-84, college: N.Carolina, agency: Haylett Sports) seemed risky. A first-round pick out of North Carolina in 2005, McCants washed out of the N.B.A. after four seasons and blamed, in part, a relationship with Khloe Kardashian. Martin was confident in his selection process. 'I know basketball and I know how to win,' he said last week. McCants proved him right, complementing both Martin, 39, and Harrington, 37, and finishing No. 2 in the league in steals and No. 3 in scoring. The draft was snake format, so Trilogy did not pick again until No. 16. But the team made another strong choice: James White (201-F/G-82, college: Cincinnati, agency: 3Eye), a swingman who briefly played for three N.B.A. teams, including the Knicks. He became one of the Big3's best shooters and the team's assists leader. Both Mahorn and Harrington called him the glue guy. 'He can play multiple positions, he can check a guard, a forward, a big man,' Mahorn said. Harrington said White had covered the toughest opponent to guard in each game. He did it well enough to be named defensive player of the year. Trilogy chose another shooting guard, Dion Glover (196-G-78, college: Georgia Tech), at No. 19. He became the fifth man on the five-man roster. Added to Harrington ('Al's basketball I.Q. is off the charts,' Mahorn said) and Martin, the drafted players gave Trilogy a high-quality roster. 'We have two versatile bigs,' Martin said. 'Al can play perimeter and post, and I can hit open jump shots.' Though team members emphasized that three-on-three basketball was not very different from five-on-five, some elements required adjustments. But, for Trilogy, not necessarily intricate strategies. "A lot of the teams have plays,' Harrington said. 'We don't do that. We don't call set plays. You've got to throw out that N.B.A. mentality.' It is understood that correct spacing is vital in three-on-three. 'Attack the basket on offense,' Harrington said. 'Three-on-three opens the court up so much.' Versatility, the players said, is equally important. 'In the N.B.A.,' Harrington, 'you've got guys who can do one thing well. In three-on-three, you can't get away with it.' Mahorn said that hiding a defensive liability was impossible in three-on-three. 'In the N.B.A., you've got to have two and a half guys who play offense, two and a half who play defense,' he said. 'That doesn't work in this league.' Harrington said catch-and-shoot players could not succeed in the Big3, while also pointing out that some N.B.A. players had been instructed to play that way even if they might have more skills to offer. 'It's all hands on deck,' Martin said of the Big3. 'You've got to switch guys, post different guys. Dion might post up,' he said of the 6 foot 5 inch Glover. Trilogy has mostly stayed away from one of the new league's innovations, a 4-point shot from 30 feet or more. In the last five regular-season games, Trilogy took just one per game, making two of them. 'It's a desperation shot,' Mahorn said. And Trilogy was seldom in a desperate situation. 'Can't nobody top us with 2s, so we don't need 4s,' Harrington said. "It's first to 50,' Martin said, referring to the league's unusual scoring system, 'not first to 50 by 3s and 4s.'

Team Novi Sad Al Wahda (UAE) won their 3rd consecutive Masters after beating local heroes Lausanne (SUI) in a thrilling final of the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Lausanne Masters on August 25-26 2017. Townsville Heat beat Mackay to break 17-year QBL title drought - by Hugh McAuliffe

By Trent Slatter - Townsville Bulletin

After 17 long years, the Townsville Heat have once again been crowned QBL champions.

The Heat proved too strong for the Mackay Meteors across their three-game series, sealing the state league title with a 103-91 victory in Sunday's decider.

Townsville took the early lead with a 94-70 victory in Game 1 before Mackay bounced back in style with a 91-73 win on Saturday night to send the series to a third game.

There was nothing between the two sides in a tense first half on Sunday before the Heat exploded with a huge 30-17 third quarter to take charge of the contest.

Mackay's Chris Cedar (188-G-88) dropped a whopping 50 points as he did he best to keep the Meteors in the hunt without star point guard Shaun Bruce, who went down with an ankle injury in Game 1.

But Cedar alone couldn't match Townsville's firepower, with Peter Crawford (23 points) nailing a perfect 7/7 from beyond the arc alongside Jamell Anderson (22 points), Justin Baker (20 points), and Josh Wilcher (18 points) as they sealed an emotional championship triumph.

Heat coach Rodney Anderson conceded his side had been outplayed in Game 2, but he said they never lost confidence that they could come back and clinch the series.

'We knew the longer the series went, the better we would be,' Anderson said.

'We got beaten and let ourselves down with a couple of effort areas, but we were still confident in what we were going to do.

'We had a game plan and the guys were just laser-focused on what they had to achieve and they got the job done. I couldn't be happier.'

Anderson said the Heat had taken a great pride in representing Townsville following the demise of the Crocs in the NBL and he was delighted to reward their fans with a long-awaited title.

'This is unbelievable after 17 years without a championship,' Anderson said.

'With the Crocs not being in town anymore, these guys really took that upon themselves to carry the flag for men's basketball.

'They've worked their butts off to get these rewards and now we can't wait to get back and share this with the Townsville basketball community.'

Heat captain and local junior Matt Rees knows as well as anyone what their victory means for Townsville basketball after being part of their losing grand final side in 2008.

Rees admitted it has been a tough grind for club stalwarts like himself, Keegan Tudehope, Brendan McCully, and Max Murray, but he said finally realising their championship dream had made it all worthwhile.

'It feels fantastic. It's been a real group effort and I'm so proud of the boys,' Rees said.

'It's been a long grind. Just all the years of putting in at training week-in, week-out, but this win makes everything worthwhile.

'It puts us back on the map. Our crowd numbers have been fantastic this season and with that support we've been able to achieve big things.'

Rees is yet to make a call on whether this year will be his QBL swan song, saying he just wanted to enjoy the moment before deciding his playing future.

'I'll have an off-season and see how the body pulls up. We have a long trip home on the bus so we'll have a few drinks and enjoy it,' he said.

Fifth-ranked Paschoalotto/Bauru (2-3) was very close to win a game against top-ranked Vivo/Franca (6-0) in Sao Paulo on Wednesday. Vivo/Franca managed to secure only two-point victory 90-88. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts started the game with a very strong first quarter 27-17. But Paschoalotto/Bauru won second period 21-17. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Vivo/Franca looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of Antonio Ferreira (200-94) who helped to win the game recording 23 points and 8 rebounds. Canarios maintains the 2nd position in Salvadorean Liga MB. They are still close to the very top. Canarios would have been even better if they kept winning the games like in the last round. They have a solid 9-2 record. In the team's last game Ishman had a remarkable 68.8% from 2-point range. He turned to be Canarios' top player in his first season with the team. Miles College graduate has very impressive stats this year. Ishman is in league's top in rebounds (3rd best: 16.5rpg), assists (7th best: 5.1apg) and averages solid 1.3bpg,2.8spg and 66.0% FGP.

The second most remarkable performance in last round's games was 25-year old American forward Malik Jackson (198-F-92) of 11 Lobos. Jackson impressed basketball fans with a double-double of 41 points and 11 rebounds. Bad luck as 11 Lobos lost that game 79-88 to the higher-ranked Santa Ana (#6, 7-4). 11 Lobos is still in a red zone at 12th spot in the standings. 10 lost games are too many comparing to just one victory 11 Lobos managed to get this year. Jackson is a newcomer at 11 Lobos and it seems he did not have too much trouble to become one of team's leaders. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 28.1ppg (#6). He also registered 13.4 boards per game.

The third best performed player last round was American Christopher Blake (196-G-88) of Brujos Izalco (#5). Blake got into 30-points club by scoring 36 points in the last round. He went also for seven assists. He was a key player of Brujos Izalco, leading his team to a 86-79 win against the lower-ranked Giants (#13, 1-11). Brujos Izalco needs these victories very badly if they think about getting closer to top teams. Their record at this point is 7 victories and 4 lost games. Blake has a great season in El Salvador. After 11 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 29.5ppg (3rd best) and assists with 5.1apg (9th best). He also has 3.4spg, 1.4bpg and FGP: 58.0%.

Other top performing players last week:
4. Demarquelle Tabb (196-G/F-90) of Santa Ana - 26 points, 16 rebounds and 2 assists
5. Elder Gimenez (186-F-91) of Isidro Metapan - 30 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists
6. Simeon Howard (193-G/F-92) of Cojute - 26 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists
7. Maliek Daniels (193-SG-88) of Santa Ana - 30 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists
8. Simbarahe Gwanyanya (191-G) of Giants - 34 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists
9. Robert Kenteh) of Cojute - 21 points and 15 rebounds
10. Anthony Brown (193-PG-90) of Brujos Izalco - 23 points, 3 rebounds and 9 assists

The Player of the week is chosen based on efficiency calculation, but also including game result, importance of the game, if played recorded double-double/triple-double, etc.
The efficiency formula is a combination of various formulas used by different basketball organizations/leagues. We got involved many basketball scouts and journalists to assure it's accuracy.
The formula: 1.5*PTS + 3* (REB+AST+ST+BL-TO) - 2*BSAG - 4*PF + 3*PFRV + 4* (2FGPM+3FGPM) + 1.5*FTM - 3* (2FGPA-2FGPM) - 3* (3FGPA-3FGPM) - (FTA-FTM)

Eurobasket Select Can't Recover from Slow Start against Vfl AstroStars Bochum - by ESL News

The Eurobasket Select Team once again got itself in a deep hole to come back from, unfortunately, in tonight's game against the VfL AstroStars Bochum they couldn't pull out a win in the end. Bochum took a 25-11 lead at the end of the first quarter behind strong performances from Michael Haucke (210-C-85), Felix Engel (191-G-91), and David Stachanczyk (193-G/F-93). But the 2nd unit of Eurobasket Select lead by Zach Gordon (203-F-93, college: Cal Poly - SLO) and Kenny Bellinger (185-G-92, college: Armstr.Atlantic) went on a run in the 2nd quarter to bring them back to a 38-38 tie at halftime. Gordon subbed in and in the first two possessions put put back dunk and a three pointer to start the comeback. Bellinger, who provided an emotional spark for most of the night through spirited play knocked down 3 three pointers en route to a 13 point and 3 steal performance.

Bochum, however, a talented team coached by first year coach Gary Johnson showed resilience to calm the storm and put together an impressive second half. They lead by 5 points at the end of the third quarter and pushed the lead to as high as 13 points in the 4th quarter. 'Last year we played Bochum in our first game of the tour and pulled out a narrow win. Luckily for us their two top Americans didn't play, so we knew this year was going to be a tough test for I us,' Eurobasket Select Head Coach Allen Mkrtychyan said. 'I really liked Michael Haucke. He played well against us last year and again this year. I think they will have a pretty successful year in the Pro B.'

For tonight's game Eurobasket started four players making their tour debuts in Jordan Stotts (203-F-93, college: Sioux Falls), Grant Prusator (183-PG-94, college: Arkansas Tech), Arvel Atwater (196-F), and Kris Bell (206-F/C, college: Ft.Valley St.) alongside Marquis Marshall (196-F-93, college: Alvernia, PA). Marshall lead the starting unit with a team high 14 points, while Stotts added a team high 7 rebounds and Prusator a team high 4 steals. 'Last night was our first game and we had a lot of our guys get the jitters out of playing at this level in Europe. I think we got off to a slower start again because 4 of our starters were in their first game. I expect us to rebound well and get back to our winning ways now that everybody has seen the floor,' ESL Tour Director Dustin Simcox said.

Gordon and Killven Samuel (188-G-89, college: Northeastern St.) performed well off the bench for a second straight night. Gordon eclipsed 10 points and 5 rebounds while Samuel had 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. The 28th will be a schedule off day for ESL before traveling to Vechta to play against Vechta II on the 29th. Kayel Locke Powers The Giessen 46ers in Crunch Time Past the Fraport Skyliners 102-90 - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber

It may only be preseason, but the majority of the EasyCredit BBL teams not only have the core of their roster battling in preseason games in order to get tuned up for the upcoming season, but also five to seven import players on the stat sheet to help get their chemistry rolling except for the Fraport Skyliners who like every August/September in the last years have had to scramble through the preseason with their few import players that had stayed on board and the rest of their young kids rounded out by some of their farm team players from the Pro B. It wouldn't have been half as bad had their three veterans Quantez Robertson, Mike Morrison and Jonas Botterman-Wolfarth been present, but they were missing in action and one suddenly had to rely on the future with kids Isaac Bonga and Richard Freudenberg. The good news was that Mr Canada Philip Scrubb was back after missing last season on account of injury and had personal expectations as high as Mount Logan and was as hungry as a famished tourist in Ottawa getting ready to chow down at the trendy eatery Fauna and his stellar play showed. The trio of Scrubb, Bonga and Freudenberg may not have the experience of a Mayo, Gamble or Klein of the Telekom Baskets Bonn, but they are like a fountain of youth as the other three teams at the Giessen weekend tournament of Bonn, BG Goettingen and the 46ers could only dream of having young talent like that on their roster. The Fraport Skyliners weren't rewarded for their furious comeback against the Telekom Baskets Bonn losing 82-76 a day earlier as 17year old German wunderkind Isaac Bonga made his first real serious breakthrough in a BBL setting as he filled up the stat sheet like a Lebron scoring 16 points, hauling down 10 boards and dishing out five assists. On Sunday the Fraport Skyliners were playing for pride in the game for third place facing home team Giessen 46ers who stunk up the building a day earlier losing by almost 40 points to BG Goettingen, but on this day the troops of head coach Ingo Fryer not only came to play, but played a well rounded consistent game that Frankfurt couldn't combat despite their second half comeback losing 102-90. After the game ex NC-Greensboro (NCAA) forward Kayel Locke (196-F-94, college: NC-Greensboro) was relaxed doing his postgame stretching and even though he didn't lead his team in scoring, his overall energy level at both ends of the court infected his team to totally rebound form their embarrassing performance the day before. 'We were too sluggish against BG Goettingen and against Frankfurt we came out with more energy especially on the defensive end where one could see each man was trusting each other to help each other. We didn't get good shots against BG Goettingen, but better one's against Frankfurt and made them', stressed KB Bashkimi Prizren (Kosovo-SuperLeague) forward Kayel Locke. The Fraport Skyliners lost their second game in a row of the Preseason and at times there wasn't a player over 20 years of age on the court and second year man Canadian national player Philip Scrubb transformed into the leader with so many veterans absent and played his heart out especially in the second half leading his team back into the game, but the club just was unable to step up together as a team when it needed it most in crucial moments of the game. 'This was our second game in a row where we didn't start out well and weren't focused on defense with no communication. In the second half, we communicated better on defense, got defensive stops which led to easy buckets on transition. We showed a good sign in the second half, but we need to bring it for 40 minutes', warned Philip Scrubb.

The Giessen 46ers jumped all over the Fraport Skyliners right off the bat gaining the 7-2 lead as their two main offensive threats Kayel Locke and Austin Hollins scored and new American and ex E.Carolina (NCAA) forward Jamar Abrams showed his shooting expertise nailing a pull up jumper. Frankfurt couldn't muster much on offense getting a Scrubb trey and Richard Freudenberg three, but Giessen had the complete package on offense which was led by the aggressive Locke who was all over the offensive board reminding one of an undersized Kyle Hines of CSKA Moscow as he battled and battled and battled usually getting his way hauling down tough rebounds and getting put backs. Frankfurt also was having some misfortune with loose balls as they just couldn't find a sound rhythm on offense. The preseason is a time when you can test things and usually in the case of the Fraport Skyliners, they always have an abundance of youth playing extra minutes thus gaining more experience. Frankfurt got some fortune getting a big 8-2 run to cut the Giessen lead to 20-19 as their youth came up big as third year man 20 year old German Garai Zeeb figured in all three buckets hitting a trey, making a beautiful left handed lay in traffic and firing the ball from the wing to the other finding 18 year old ex Kronberg talent Felix Hecker.on the ball reversal for three. However the Frankfurt run didn't impress Giessen with this huge cut into their lead ending the first quarter with a strong 7-2 run to lead 27-21. In the run, Giessen got vital support from young German talent Bjarne Kraushaar and other German talent Mauricio Marin while Locke closed out the 10 minute period with a running left handed hook finishing with six points and six boards. 'Giessen played more together, moved the ball better and rebounded better than against BG Goettingen. Giessen also came out with more confidence shooting the ball and Kayel Locke kept them together at both ends of the court', stressed ex Sacramento St. (NCAA) and Giessen 2 forward Nick Hornsby. The Giessen 46ers were shooting 52% from the field and 38% from outside while the Fraport Skyliners were shooting 50% from the field and 50% from outside. Giessen had the 14-5 rebound edge, but three turnovers while Frankfurt had two turnovers.

In the second quarter the Giessen 46ers continued their rampage on offense and stepped up their defense halting the Fraport Skyliner's first 11 possessions going on a 11-0 run to extend their lead to 38-21 which felt like a lot more, but wasn't because they were unable to connect on some plays they should have. In the run, ex Xavier (NCAA) guard Dee Davis nailed a trey, German veteran Benjamin Lischka connected on a 20 footer and snuck inside and split the defense for a bucket and Austin Hollins who is the son of ex NBA guard of the Philadelphia 76ers Lionel also waltzed through the Frankfurt defense as their communication on defense was nonexistent. Giessen upped their defense once more especially getting very aggressive play from young Alen Pjanic and upped their tempo something Frankfurt was unable to contend with. Konstantin Shubert finally got Frankfurt's first points on free throws as almost six minutes had been played. Giessen continued to have a bit more fortune than Frankfurt in some area's like getting a loose ball that cherry picker Abrams picked up and put home and the kid Kraushaar making a tough individual play that usually arise when a team is leading huge, but he was rewarded with nothing as net as Giessen led 43-36. Frankfurt finally achieved it's first field goal of the second quarter with 2.48 to play by Philip Scrubb with a lay in cutting the Giessen advantage to 43-28. Giessen went into the break strong going on a 8-3 run to lead 51-31. In the run, Giessen got to the line twice and got easy baskets inside from Abrams and Locke who continued to destroy in the paint. 'Giessen got good defensive rebounds and rotated well giving Frankfurt many contested shots and they were just flying around on defense. On offense they continued to attack well led by Locke and Lischka', stressed Giessen 46ers 2 forward Nick Hornsby. The Giessen 46ers were shooting 53% from the field and 40% from the three point line while the Fraport Skyliners were shooting 34% from the field and 31% from the three point line. Giessen had the 24-18 rebound edge and four turnovers while Frankfurt had nine turnovers.

In the third quarter the Fraport Skyliners had their most shining moment in the game coming back and erasing the 20 point Giessen lead and trailing only by seven points. Basketball is always a game of runs and as Giessen had theirs in the second quarter, the Fraport Skyliners had theirs in the third quarter cruising out on a 12-2 run cutting the Giessen lead to 53-43. With Frankfurt in a rough spot and no other veterans on the floor, it was only obvious that if there was anyone that would get Frankfurt back into the game then it was Philip Scrubb who had won 7 titles at Carleton in the CIS and knew how to perform in tough situations. He scored seven points in the run picking his spots and drilling home two trey's while getting the and one after being fouled behind the three point line. Freudenberg also gave support with a trey and Kiel hit free throws. However Austin Hollins who played in Finland last season was a real thorn in the side of Frankfurt as he never allowed Frankfurt to get closer as he was performing his own show as he was potent inside out hitting two three's including one in Bonga's face and showing his dangerous drive keeping Frankfurt in non striking distance trailing 66-51. Giessen also continued to get support from many players as Davis who was a masterful ball handler got out of a few bad situations to end a play with a floater with a second left on the shot clock and then dropped a trey for the Giessen 71-60 lead. Without Scrubb on the floor and in good form, Frankfurt would have been down by 25, but he continued to showcase his hot hand hitting two more trey's as did Zeeb as Giessen led only 74-67 after 30 minutes. 'We had better ball movement and I was more aggressive. I got easy looks and once I hit shots they changed their defense which opened it up for others on the floor. We were smart on offense and took what the defense gave us', stressed Philip Scrubb. The Giessen 46ers were shooting 53% from the field and 44% from the parking lot while the Fraport Skyliners were shooting 48% from the field and 44% from the parking lot. Giessen had the 27-25 rebound lead and nine turnovers while Frankfurt had 12 turnovers.

In the fourth quarter the Fraport Skyliners continued to battle and got closer and closer, but in crunch time ran out of gas allowing a 12-0 run that put a sharp dagger into their basketball heart. Frankfurt started strong getting a tip in from young German Armin Trtovac and a Scrubb trey that looked so nonchalantly like Uncle Drew mode aka Kyrie Irving as if he was just putting up shots on the playground. Frankfurt would have gotten a lot closer and quicker in their comeback if it hadn't been for Benjamin Lischka who supplied the hot hand nailing two three's and a long two in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. After a Hollins runner, Frankfurt went on a much needed 6-0 run as Zeeb dropped a three and Bonga scored in transition to cut the Giessen lead to 85-80. After a Lischka long three, Frankfurt crawled closer to Giessen's lead going on a 5-0 run as now Scrubb showed just how lethal of an offensive player he is always knowing in only his second professional season when to score and when to find his teammates as he assisted on Bonga's three and Kiel's two handed dunk as suddenly Giessen led only 87-85. 'Basketball is a game of runs and we just weathered the storm. We got good coaching and rotations and hit three's and forced Frankfurt to turnovers', stressed Kayel Locke. 'We were riding the momentum. We did a good job taking them out of their offense when we had to. We were right with them', stressed Philip Scrubb. The Fraport Skyliners had the momentum and seemed like they were going to go for the blow and knockout, but instead the Giessen 46ers turned the tables on Frankfurt going on an unexpected 12-0 run to decide the game leading 99-85. In the run, it was Kayel Locke who saved his best for last being in attack mode and being a beast scoring on a back door cut, nailing a three and making a tip in while Dee Davis set him up for the first two buckets. Hollins added to the offensive onslaught with free throws. After a Trtovac lay in, Davis and Hecker closed out the game trading three pointers. 'The whole team stepped up in crunch time. The balls came to me and I made some shots and we trusted each other. Hollins was also big all day long. He was so important playing with high energy starting on the defensive end being active and always pushing the tempo', stressed Kayel Locke. 'We had bad turnovers at the end and didn't set our defense well at the end and didn't get good possessions', warned Philip Scrubb. The Giessen 46ers were led by Austin Hollins with 27 points. Kayel Locke added 20 points and nine rebounds while Benjamin Lischka produced 18 points and Dee Davis had 16 points. The Fraport Skyliners were led by Philip Scrubb with 26 points and nine assists. Niklas Kiel added 13 points and 10 boards, Garai Zeeb had 13 points and seven assists while Isaac Bonga supplied 13 points. The Giessen 46ers shot 55% from the field and 54% from outside while the Fraport Skyliners shot 49% from the field and 48% from outside. Giessen won the battle on the boards 34-33 and had 12 turnovers while Frankfurt coughed up the ball 16 times.

Davonte Lacy (Team Ehingen) Larry Bird Communicated To Me To Make The Most Of This Opportunity And Don't Take It For Granted - by Miles Schmidt-Scheuber

Davonte Lacy (193-G-93, college: Washington St.) is a 24 year old 193cm guard from Tacoma, Washington that is going into his second professional season and first with German Pro A team Ehingen. Last season as a rookie he played with UBC Magnofit Gussing Knights (Austria-A Bundesliga) playing 11 FIBA Europe Cup:games averaging 7.4ppg, 2.4rpg, 3.1apg, 1.0spg, 2FGP: 37.8%, 3FGP: 20.0%, FT: 80.6%; and 21 Austrian A Bundesliga games averaging 10.9ppg, 2.6rpg, 2.4apg, 2FGP: 49.4%, 3FGP: 32.9%, FT: 80.2%, left in Feb.'16, later that month moved to BC Hallmann Vienna (Austria-A Bundesliga) playing 15 games averaging 5.9ppg, 1.0rpg, 1.4apg, FGP: 48.3%, 3PT: 36.4%, FT: 66.7%. He started his basketball career with Washington St. (NCAA) in 2011 playing a total of 110 NCAA games. His best season was his junior season where he played 23 games: averaging 19.4ppg, 4.2rpg, 1.4apg, 1.2spg, FGP: 42.9%, 3PT: 39%, FT: 83.5%. In his senior year he played 31 games averaging 16.9ppg, 2.6rpg, 2.1apg, FGP: 49.2%, 3PT: 33.0%, FT: 77.0%. He spoke to eurobasket earlier in the summer about basketball.

Thanks Davonte for talking to eurobasket.com. Where are you at the moment and how has your summer been?

At the moment I am back home in the Tacoma/Seattle area just working on my game. And enjoying family before I leave.

Congrats on signing with German pro A team Ehingen. You didn't play last season. How thankful are you that you will be able to continue your professional career?

I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to continue my career I know I can still play at a high level I just need the opportunity and thanks to coach and the management at Ehingen for believing in me.

How tough was it for you being away from the professional game for so long? What was toughest in this time for you to accept?

It was extremely tough but I needed to heal my body and make sure that I am 100% and ready to make a team better. The hardest to accept was the fact I had to wait and not have the chance to play.

The Ehingen team are very excited to have landed you, but are being patient not wanting to raise the expectations too much. After a up and down rookie season and break after that, do you feel pressure going into your second professional season to show what you really have on the court?

I don't believe there is any pressure I do believe from what I been told that we should have an opportunity to be competitive in the league so I would like to do my part and help the team be the best we can be.

You stressed in the Ehingen press release that the main reason you chose Ehingen was because it will give you many opportunities to develop further. What else convinced you about joining Team Ehingen?

The coach plays a good system and believes in player development. Also I believe in Germany it will give me competition to be better and advance my career further.

You played in Austria and lived next door to Germany. What do you know in general about the country Germany and it's basketball? Do you have any friends playing in Germany?

I just know the culture between Germany and Austria are similar. I know a few German words like please and thank you. I know there is a lot of history here in Germany. And the basketball culture keeps on growing into one of the biggest markets in the world. My friend I grew up with is Abdul Gaddy and he just signed in Wurzburg (I believe that's how you spell it), so it will be both our first times over there.

Let's talk about your game. Your shooting and scoring really stand out, but what other strengths do you have that prove that you aren't a one dimensional player?

Well ever since I became a professional I have focused on being more of a playmaker, making my teammates better, and setting them up to succeed. Also my defense has took a major step since college, and I take as much pride in that now as I do my offense.

You grew up looking up to NBA superstars Allen Iverson and Tracy Mcgrady, but if you had to pick an NBA player that most resembles how you play who would you chose?

I believe that I tried to mold my game after Carmelo Anthony in the sense I try to be proficient at every level in scoring but I can see comparisons to Damien Lillard in the playmaking and explosiveness sense

You're a guy that can flat out score, but what do you feel is a hidden strength in your game that doesn't get noticed right away on the court?

I believe that my basketball IQ and passing ability has always been a strength of my game that has not always received a great amount of attention

As a rookie you played in Austria for two teams UBC Magnofit Gussing Knights (Austria-A Bundesliga): FIBA Europe Cup: 11 games: 7.4ppg, 2.4rpg, 3.1apg, 1.0spg, 2FGP: 37.8%, 3FGP: 20.0%, FT: 80.6%; Austrian A Bundesliga: 21 games: 10.9ppg, 2.6rpg, 2.4apg, 2FGP: 49.4%, 3FGP: 32.9%, FT: 80.2%, left in Feb.'16, later that month moved to BC Hallmann Vienna (Austria-A Bundesliga): 15 games: 5.9ppg, 1.0rpg, 1.4apg, FGP: 48.3%, 3PT: 36.4%, FT: 66.7%. What was your wake up call to being a rookie in Europe where you knew that you were far away from home in Tacoma?

I believe my wake up call was just being told I was a point guard and learning the position on the fly while learning how to play a different style of basketball. Because Europe plays a different way thea the states so learning a new position and new game was a little harder than expected.

Talk about your rookie season in Austria. After a stellar career in Washington State and taste of the NBA were your expectations a bit too high going into your rookie season? Were you expecting to put up huge numbers in Austria?

Well my rookie year I had huge expectations and in preseason it was going to plan. And then like I said previously my coach wanted me at the point guard and never playing that position before I struggled scoring like I used too because I was trying to get everyone involved. So I struggled finding balance between scoring and facilitating.

Before turning professional you played NBA Pro Summer League in Orlando (Indiana Pacers): 4 games: 3.0ppg, 2.0rpg, 1.3apg. What kind of experience was this for you? Larry Legend Bird was at every practice. Did you run into him and get some advice from him?

It was a great experience it showed me what I need to do basketball and body wise to compete at the highest level. Yea the few times we communicated was brief but he just expressed that I should make the most of this opportunity and don't take it for granted.

Your goal is still the NBA. What do you feel is still missing from your game? Defense has been a knock in your game. Is this something that you will continue to work on this season in Germany?

Just continuing to improve my all-around game is ideal for me to get back for another opportunity at the NBA. But like you said my defense is a huge key in my development. Along with just being a knock down shooter.

You played at Washington State finishing as the alltime leader in three pointers made and fifth all-time in scoring. How much does that three point record mean to you considering one of the worlds best shooters now Klay Thompson played there?

It means a lot because coming from where I was I wasn't known as a three point shooter. So to be known as one of the best ever after missing a lot of games my junior and sophomore yeasr means a lot. And to be mentioned with okay is an honor hopefully some day I can reach his level.

You played for head coach Ken Bone for three years and as a senior for Ernie Kent. How did these two guys groom and prepare you best for a professional basketball career?

I believe both coaches help me with just how to be a professional. Also they helped me understand how to be coachable.

How do you remember Abe Lodwick in your freshman year. Was he a guy that inspired you in your first year? Are you surprised that he recently already retired from the game?

Abe was a good leader for me as a freshman, I talked to him today to congratulate him on his new job.

You had so many great games and memories, but was playing your arch rival Washington the biggest game and experience for you at Washington State? As a senior you won by three and lost by three pouring in 23 and 25 points. Do you think you will ever witness an atmosphere again like you did in those games?

Yea I believe the atmosphere will be the same at the higher level but the passion and just the dislike between the two teams I don't think can be matched.

Who won a one on one in practice you or Ike Iroegbu?

I beat Ike every time no question lol

Every night you played against the best in the NCAA. Who was the toughest player you battled in the NCAA that is in the NBA now?

I would have to say that Allen Crabbe was the best because he was a senior when I was freshman so that was difficult to guard.

Your from Tacoma the same city where Boston Celtic Isaiah Thomas comes from. How have you followed his career and does his story of how he elevated his game to a new level and put the Boston Celtics back on the map inspire you to take your game to the next level?

Yea I followed his career a lot since we went to the same high school. Of course seeing him being successful makes me believe I can also be successful.

How does your summer workout plan look like on and off the court in 2017?

Summer workout plan is I workout every morning doing skill work then play either 4v4 or 5v5. Then at night try to either lift weights or do hot yoga. Then play in the Jamal Crawford pro-am every weekend.

If you had to construct your own NBA Rushmore which 4 heads would you chose?

My own Mount Rushmore would consist of Lebron James, Michael Jordan, Allen Iverson, and Shaquille O'Neal (in that order) lol

Lebron James failed to win his fourth NBA title and is still three away from Michael Jordan. Where does Lebron stand right now in your opinion in the never ending debate of who is the best of all-time?

I believe right now Lebron is right behind Jordan and will surpass him when he becomes the all time leading scorers and top 5 in both rebounds and assists.

There has been criticism of Russell Westbrook to be focusing more on rebounding to help inflate his stats and possibilities of getting triple doubles instead of focusing on his defensive assignments. Do you feel that this is a fair assessment to the player Russell Westbrook?

I think he Does everything for his team to win and as long as they do that and get into the playoffs then I don't see anything wrong with it. Especially if his opponent is not an offensive threat.

How do you summarize the 2017 NBA Draft. What sleepers do you see playing a role in the NBA?

This draft could end up being as good as the 2003 draft. But the biggest sleeper I think is Dennis smith jr. I think he has a chance to be as good as Derrick Rose pre injury

Where will the journey of the Houston Rockets go this season with Chris Paul and James Harden in the back court. Do they have enough to make a serious run at the title or is something missing?

As long as Golden State has their core nucleus (KD Steph Klay Draymond) it's going to be hard for anyone to be a serious title contender in my opinion.

What was the last movie that you saw?

I just seen guardians of the galaxy yesterday and I highly recommend it. It was very funny and had great graphics.

Thanks Davonte for the chat.

Pelicans' Solomon Hill tears hamstring, could miss entire season - by Eurobasket News

Bad news for New Orleans Pelicans fans. Four year veteran Solomon Hill (6'7''-F-91, college: Arizona) tore his hamstring this week, and could miss the entire season. News first broke from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, who says Hill has already undergone surgery to repair his hamstring. Hill, 26, played significant minutes for New Orleans last season and signed a 4-year, $48 million deal last summer to remain with the Pelicans. This is a huge blow for New Orleans as Hill was sure to be a large factor in their team next season. The Pelicans are trying to get a full year of Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins under their belt, and Hill would have been a big part of their frontcourt rotation. The Western Conference certainly did not get any easier this summer with so many stars, including Paul George and Jimmy Butler, heading that direction. New Orleans was always going to struggle at the bottom of the playoff race, but now it looks like they will have to scramble with limited flexibility thanks to the cap space taken up by Hill's deal.

Gilas Pilipinas retains SEAG basketball crown - by Eurobasket News

The Philippines, composed mostly of young PBA players, kept its stranglehold of men's basketball in the Southeast Asian Games as it blasted Indonesia, 94-55, in the gold-medal game at the MABA Stadium here Saturday night. Meralco guard Cris Michael Tolomia (191-G-93) sparkled the most with a 5-of-8 three-point clip and a game-high total of 20 points as the Filipinos easily hurdled the Indons to complete a perfect ride to another SEAG crown. TNT KaTropa's Troy Rosario, Alaska Milk's Bryan Cruz (196-F), Ginebra's Kevin Ferrer (194-F-93) and Meralco's Baser Amer) had essential help as the Nationals nailed a 12th straight crown that they're defending in Manila in 2019. 'This is the best game we played in the tourney. We hit our shots and luckily it happened in the gold-medal game,' said Gilas coach Jong Uichico. 'Nobody wanted to lose, and it helped that coach Chot Reyes was there,' said Uichico, helped out in the final match by the Gilas program chief who flew in Friday fresh from their FIBA Asia Cup stint in Lebanon. The Filipinos scored a five-game sweep, with earlier victories over Thailand (81-74), Myanmar (129-34) and Malaysia (98-66) in the elims and over Singapore (68-60) in the semis. The Nationals slowly pulled away in the second period and refused to slow down even as the Indons had given up the fight as early as in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter. In the course of putting the finishing touches in the win, young sensation Kobe Paras (198-F/C-97) showcased highlight slams that sent the Filipino crowd on their feet. Paras fired 14 markers while PBA D-League MVP Raymar Jose (193-F) collected 12 markers just in 12 minutes of action as the Philippines stretched to 10 years a streak of unbeaten run in the Games. Team Phl hasn't dropped a game in the SEAG since Romel Adducul and his teammates lost one match before wrapping up the crown in Jakarta in 1997.

  U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS

AMERICUP: Back in 2001, Canada Got away - by David Edole

A basketball game is sometimes more than what the final score indicates. 2001 was such a case as the Virgin Islands senior men fell to Canada, 108-97, in Neuquen, Argentina. Looking at the score one would say no contest. But it was an overtime win and the final seconds has been on the V.I. player's mind and will never go away. Was it a three or a two point basket? Many in attendance were not sure as Marcus Oliver (189-G-80) stepped back and swished an amazing shot as time expired. The officials would go to the monitors to decide the outcome of the game.

I could clearly remember the Spanish announcers saying and showing Oliver was clearly behind the arch. They even zoomed in for a better perspective, but it was not meant to be as Canada got the benefit of the doubt. A Canadian team that featured Steve Nash (who dished out 16 assists) and his presence was more than enough for the officials to suggest overtime, 85-85.

The Virgin Islands arrived at the tournament with only nine players; Jason Edwin (197-G/F-81, college: Kent St.) joined the team later. That year, we had a split squad as FIBA had two tournaments at the same time. Our Senior Men National Team competed in the Tournament of the Americas in Argentina, from August 15 to the 26, and the University Men's National Team attended the World University Games in Beijing, China, from August 22 thru September 1st. Jabahri Brown, Cuthbert Victor and Kevin Sheppard all had University games duty. By the way they finished 6-2. The senior team also missed NBA players Raja Bell (196-F/G-76, college: FIU) and David Vanterpool (195-G/F-73, college: St.Bonaventure) and Australia mega star Leon Trimmingham (200-F-71, college: Briar Cliff).

As for the game, Leroy Blyden (196-F-74) (Post University) and Jameel Heywood (198-F-77, college: Oklahoma) (Oklahoma University) constantly knocked down mid-range shots and Oliver Taylor (Seton Hall) nailed a spectacular triple from half court to put the V.I. up 27-24 at the end of the first.

Canada would battle back to tie the score at the half (50-50) and take a three point lead into the fourth, 69-66. In overtime, Canada scored eight of the first nine points to put the game away.

After losing a two point decision to Panama (90-88), the V.I. went on to win their first game in AmeriCup history with an 84-67 win over Mexico behind 22 points from Carl Thomas (203-F-76, college: Charleston) and 20 from Heywood. The V.I. advanced to the second round after posting an 1-3 record, including losing 99-93 to Puerto Rico.

In the second round, the tri-island nation fell to Argentina, Brazil and Venezuela before topping Uruguay 113-91 to close out the tournament. Up to this day, the team that also featured Gracen Averil (197-F-73) (Texas Tech), Andy Chelcher (185-G, college: W.Virg.Wesl.) (Educational Complex), JaJa Richards (207-C-75, college: Loyola, IL) (Loyola of Chicago) and Calvert White (191-G/F-75, college: SE Missouri St.) (Southeast Missouri) is the only Virgin Islands team to win a game at the AmeriCup level and finished in seventh place. Canada finished with the Bronze medal.

But I have a great feeling about the 2017 squad that is off to Bahia Blanca, the capitol of Argentina Basketball. The matchups may favor the Caribbean Nation over the North American power but the similarities between past and present cagers are eerie.

Both teams have an Edwin, a left handed St. Thomian (Calvert White-Jahmiah Simmons), a defensive minded center (Ja Ja Richards -Phil Jones), a speedy point guard (Oliver Taylor-Walter Hodge), a dangerous shooter (Marcus Oliver- Johnny Gray), a player from Texas Tech (Gracen Averil -Justin Gray), a stud (Jameel Heywood-Cuthbert Victor), an undersized post (Leroy Blyden-Javier Martinez), a do everything wing (Carl Thomas -Khallid Hart), an athlete (Andy Chelcher-Rashawn Fredericks). However, the new version has something that could help us get by Canada, Stephaun Adams.

The AmeriCup kick off tonight, Sunday, versus Canada at 7:30pm. Head Coach Sam Mitchell and company will then face Venezuela and Argentina to complete the Group Phase.

Virgin Islands will need a top-team finish in the group to advance along with Argentina, as main organizer of the competition, to the Semi-Finals of the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 in Cordoba, Argentina on September 2. The Final of the FIBA AmeriCup 2017 will be played on September 3. To follow the team http://www.fiba.basketball/americup/2017
